Wyatt iv DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF RADIO SCIENCE The International Union of Radio Science is one of 18 world scientific unions organized under the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). It is commonly designated as URSI (from its French name, Union Radio Scientifique Internationale). Its aims are (1) to promote the scientific study of radio communications, (2) to aid and organize radio research requiring cooperation on an international scale and to encourage the discussion and publication of the results, (3) to facilitate agreement upon common methods of measurement and the standardization of measuring instruments, and (4) to stimulate and to coordinate studies of the scientific aspects of telecommunications using electromagnetic waves, guided and unguided. The International Union itself is an organizational framework to aid in promoting these objectives. The actual technical work is largely done by the National Committee in the various countries. The Union is supported by contributions (dues) from 38 member countries. Additional funds for symposia and other scientific activities of the Union are provided by ICSU from contributions received for this purpose from UNESCO. The International Union, as of the XXth General Assembly held in Washington, DC in August 1981, has nine bodies called Commissions for centralizing studies in the principal technical fields. V Every three years the International Union holds a meeting called the General Assembly. The next is the XXIVth, to be held in 1993. The Secretariat prepares and distributes the Proceedings of the General Assemblies. The International Union arranges international symposia on specific subjects pertaining to the work of one or several Commissions and also cooperates with other Unions in international symposia on subjects of joint interest. Radio is unique among the fields of scientific work in having a specific adaptability to large-scale international research programs, since many of the phenomena that must be studied are worldwide in extent and yet are in a measure subject to control by experimenters. Exploration of space and the extension of scientific observations to the space environment are dependent on radio for their research. One branch, radio astronomy, involves cosmic phenomena. URSI thus has a distinct field of usefulness in furnishing a meeting ground for the numerous workers in the manifold aspects of radio research; its meetings and committee activities furnish valuable means of promoting research through exchange of ideas. An introduction to the theory of random processes is given: ergodicity, amplitude distri­ bution, effects of linear filtering. The narrative describes the evolution of the station, from its origins as a source of standard frequency, to its current role as the source of time-of-day synchronization for many millions of radio controlled clocks. Introduction NIST radio station WWVB, which today serves as the synchronization source for tens of millions of radio controlled clocks, began operation from its present location near Fort Collins, Colorado at 0 hours, 0 minutes Universal Time on July 5, 1963. Thus, the year 2013 marked the station’s 50th anniversary, a half century of delivering frequency and time signals referenced to the national standard to the United States public. One of the best known and most widely used measurement services provided by the U. S. government, WWVB has spanned and survived numerous technological eras. Based on technology that was already mature and well established when the station began broadcasting in 1963, WWVB later benefitted from the miniaturization of electronics and the advent of the microprocessor, which made low cost radio controlled clocks possible that would work indoors.

However, the Navy’s most survivable wartime communica- tions link to nuclear-powered strategic submarines--the TACAMO aircraft--has cer- tain problems which need attention. We made this study because of widespread congressional interest in strategic communications systems, especially the TACAMO and proposed extremely low frequency systems. These issues are receiving increased recognition, and the Navy plans to spend millions of dollars to improve the TACAMO system and conduct research and development on the extremely low frequency system. Striations are treated as slowly varying with the height wave- guides that trap upper-hybrid resonance (UHR) oscillations. Modes with different discrete eigennumbers are retained in striations. Each mode interacts with a pump wave within a restricted range of heights. Thus the vertical ionospheric inhomogeneity determines the amplification of UHR oscillations. Anomalous absorption of the pump wave associated with the excitation of UHR oscillations in striations is calculated. Typical transversal scales and increase of the electron temperature in striations are estimated. INTRODUCTION One of the most interesting physical phenomena associated with the HF heating of the ionosphere is the formation of striations - elongated plasma depletions [1]. According to the theory striations are created as a result of conversion of the EM pump wave into UHR oscillations on small scale plasma irregularities [2]. UHR oscillations are trapped in striations and increase their amplitude due to the resonance (thermal parametric) instability. The mechanism of amplification of UHR oscillations and the formation of the stationary state of striations is a complicated theoretical problem. The existing modern theories treat this problem taking into account only the transversal plasma inhomogeneity [3, 4]. At the same time it is well-known that the longitudinal inhomogeneity of plasma changes the process of the waves interaction. The instability instead of absolute becomes of a convective type thus restricting the amplitude of the growing waves.

Maunsell, This article examines a rectangular closed circuit filled with an electrolyte and H. E. Schulz fluid, known as macro pumps, where a permanent magnet generates a magnetic field and electrodes generate the electric field in the flow. The fluid conductor moves inside the circuit under magnetohydrodynamic effect (MHD). The MHD model has been derived from the Navier Stokes equation and coupled with the Maxwell equations for Newtonian incompressible Universidade de São Paulo fluid. Wel omdat PI4HAL de roepnaam is van het radiostation aan boord van het s/s Rotterdam I waarin zo’n veertig jaar marconisten (radio officieren) hun werk hebben gedaan, met zowel telegrafie als telefonie. Nu zijn er naast de ‘gewone’ radiozendamateurs ook een aantal ex-radio officieren die als radiozendamateur aan boord bezig zijn om bezoekers te vertellen over tijden van weleer en hun hobby uit te oefenen, vaak met het gebruik van de morse sleutel. Maar nu – in het corona tijdperk – eventjes niet. Dit verklaart wellicht de interessegebieden van deze nieuwsbrief. Vanzelf- sprekend wens ik iedereen een voorspoedig en gezond 2021.
