A., Doetsch, J., Maurer, H., and Linde, N., 2010, Full-waveform inversion of cross- hole ground-penetrating radar data to characterize a gravel aquifer close to the Thur River, Switzerland: Near Surface Geophysics, 8, 635-649. 0 Full-waveform inversion of GPR data from the Thur River aquifer ABSTRACT Crosshole radar tomography is a useful tool for mapping shallow subsurface electrical properties viz. dielectric permittivity and electrical conductivity. Common practice is to invert crosshole radar data with ray-based tomographic algorithms using first arrival traveltimes and first cycle amplitudes. However, the resolution of conventional standard ray-based inversion schemes for crosshole ground penetrating radar (GPR) is limited because only a fraction of the information contained in the radar data is used. The resolution can be improved significantly by using a full-waveform inversion that considers the entire waveform, or significant parts thereof. A recently developed 2-D time-domain vectorial full-waveform crosshole radar inversion code has been modified in the present study by allowing optimized acquisition setups that reduce the acquisition time and computational costs significantly. This is achieved by minimizing the number of transmitter points and maximizing the number of receiver positions. The improved algorithm was employed to invert crosshole GPR data acquired within a gravel aquifer (4 - 10 m depth) in the Thur valley, Switzerland. The simulated traces of the final model obtained by the full-waveform inversion fit the observed traces very well in the lower part of the section and reasonably well in the upper part of the section.

    La rivolta capriaschese del 1802 Una volta il Ticino non faceva parte della Confederazione Svizzera. Vi è poi entrato verso il 1500, ma come baliaggio (cioè territorio sottomesso ai cantoni della Svizzera interna). I ticinesi a quei tempi erano molto attaccati alle tradizioni e pagavano pochissime tasse. Nel 1798 arrivò Napoleone, conquistò la Svizzera, cambiò le leggi e alzò le tasse. Era una grande novità, era una rivoluzione! La gente, soprattutto nelle campagne, era scontenta delle nuove idee e si rifiutava di pagare le nuove tasse, perché non aveva abbastanza soldi. A quei tempi il prefetto di Lugano era un tale Franzoni, che il 25 gennaio 1802 decise di mandare trenta soldati armati in Capriasca per obbligare la gente a pagare. Quella sera stessa molti capriaschesi si riunirono in assemblee per decidere cosa fare. Il mattino seguente le campane della chiesa di santo Stefano di Tesserete suonarono per molto tempo: era un segnale d'allarme. Subito la gente si riunì presso la chiesa per vedere cosa stava succedendo. Alcuni uomini si spiegarono: volevano rivoltarsi contro il prefetto perché il nuovo governo faceva troppe spese e loro non erano d'accordo di pagare delle tasse così alte.
