Top 5 Underrated Queen Songs Laura Ballinger explores the joys of Queen’s lesser-known tracks Everyone knows the Queen classics, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Killer Queen’ to name just two. But what about those songs that are less well known and equally as good? Here’s a list of five of Queen’s most underrated songs, with the albums they feature on. 1. One Vision (A Kind of Magic) In top position comes ‘One Vision’. It starts with a slow motion, sci-fi sound, building into a funky beat and a classic Brian May guitar solo. The lyrics are memorable and catchy, with a fun back story as to why they became so iconic. When the band recorded this, they played around with the lyrics, finding alternative versions of ‘one vision’ which would fit the number of syllables. Some examples include, ‘John Deacon’, ‘One sex position’, then drifting into ones that didn’t quite fit, like ‘one shrimp’ and ‘one clam’. They actually settled on ‘fried chicken’ and, if you listen closely, it’s the final line in the song. Despite the comedic aspect, this song has quite a serious and meaningful undertone. It was written following Queen’s performance at Live Aid in 1985 and depicts the joining together of millions of people, united with the ‘one vision’ of making a better world for everyone. For this reason, it makes the top of the list. 2. Death on Two Legs (Dedicated To…) (A Night at the Opera) As one of Queen’s heavier songs, it’s not for everyone. -

A close comparison of Queen Live at the Rainbow ’74 (2014) and previously available versions. Thomas Christie Intro In this study, I’m comparing the unofficially available versions of the Rainbow concerts with the 2014 release. Old sources: - March concert – Pittrek’s three source merge bootleg - November concerts – Audio rip from the 1992 ‘Box of Trix’ VHS - November 19th concert – The three song bootleg (Son and Daughter, Stone Cold Crazy and Liar) - Now I’m Here, November, as appears on the 2002 DVD ‘Greatest Video Hits’ New source: - The 2014 release I won’t be comparing the differing use of camera angles and editing in the video – this is solely an examination of the audio, with particular focus on the vocals, wherein most of the discrepancies lie. However, if the video is pertinent in understanding the origin on the vocal, then I will refer to it. I will provide a brief summary at the beginning of each song’s entry, followed by closer analysis. I must be clear that this isn’t intended to prove any point, rather just to provide specific information on the differences between the available versions of these shows, and hopefully bring us closer to understanding what parts are true to the way the shows actually sounded, which parts are clearly 1974 studio overdubs or 2014 alterations. In the case of the November shows, there is also the question of which parts of the audio belong to which night, which is overall very difficult to ascertain when there’s so few reference points which are confirmed to belong to a single night. -

It was written mostly by Freddie Mercury, with Brian May contributing second to mid-eighth. The song is officially attributed only to Mercury. The rudimentary instrumental version appears as the final track on the band's self-titled debut album (1973), with the final version on the follow-up to the queen II (1974). The completed version was the band's third single, and after performing the song on the BBC Top of the Pops in February 1974, it became their first hit, peaking at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. This is the earliest song to appear on their album Greatest Hits, except for some versions where their first single, Keep Yourself Alive, is included. The background of Rhye's Original Seven Seas was just an instrumental musical sketch closing his first album. The extended performance, scheduled for inclusion on the album of the queen II, was publicly premiered when the queen was offered a surprise appearance on BBC Top of the Pops in February 1974, and was urgently sent to vinyl two days later, on 23 February. -

Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Time Capsule Racing Cars. The Albums 1976-1978 (4CD, Cherry Red) Before there was punk there was pub rock. Truth be told, the two blurred into one another in the Seventies; both were loud, awkward back-to-basics rock that rejected the excesses of progrock and the notion of musical skill having to come first. (I actually liked it more when postpunk arrived and allowed keyboards back onstage and rock started being desconstructed again, but that's another story...) Many pub rock bands such as Clover included American country in their musical mix; others like the unjustly neglected Moon got downright funky; and there was also a version of jazz-rock by the likes of Jim Mullen and his friends, that avoided the excesses of what we think of as jazz rock. These were in contrast to the clipped, rough'n'ready performances of bands like Ducks Deluxe and Dr Feelgood, who if they had chosen to wear plastic sacks and pins in their noses could easily have become punks. They were also in contrast to Racing Cars, a hard working band from Wales, who drew on the swamp music of Little Feat and others in the American South for their inspiration, and featured some beautiful slide and lead guitar work within their repertoire. They also had a secret weapon: Morty on lead vocals, a small, soulful whirlwind of a man, who could captivate audiences of any size with his angelic bluesy voice. (Morty also had a secret weapon: a brother who was the band's roadie. On a good night the brother would join the band onstage, where he would juggle and balance things on his nose to help round off the evening in celebratory style.) Racing Cars were mainstays of the London pub rock scene. -

The Pressure of a Review PRESS PLAY "Queen: Perhaps the Most
The pressure of a Review PRESS PLAY "Queen: perhaps the most unique band in the history of rock music," goes the narration at the beginning of the recently released DVD Queen under Review: 1973–1980 (Chrome Dreams). Whether or not it's possible to be more unique than other "unique" bands, there's something to this statement. Maybe "Queen: the biggest anomaly in the history of rock" would be more accurate. In any case, Queen was a multifaceted band, with more depth than its gaudy popular image suggests. (I say "was" out of a refusal to acknowledge the current Paul Rodgers– fronted touring version.) Everybody knows Queen, but generally in just a superficial, greatest-hits-only way. We've all been subjected to "We Will Rock You" and "Another One Bites the Dust" more times than we've cared for, but how many people can name even one song on, say, Queen II (Elektra, 1974)? I listened to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in high school just like everyone else did — Wayne's World came out during my sophomore year — but didn't become an official convert until I finally sat down with Queen II a few years ago. It helps that this album of dark, majestic (and, yes, occasionally pompous) hard rock has no big hits and can therefore be listened to without the pop-cultural baggage that weighs down everything from 1975's A Night at the Opera (Elektra) through 1980's The Game (Hollywood). Once you get past the megahits, though, it turns out that every Queen album from this era has several excellent lesser-known songs — as well as at least one atrocious, unlistenable one (e.g., almost anything sung by drummer Roger Taylor).
