It might equally apply to an individual- to Eric Clapton, for example, The Beatles are the saints of the 1960s, and George Harrison an especially "heavy person". This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have theirwork tied down by the now antiquated notion of the "group". Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic. -

Giving America Back the Blues
GIVING AMERICA BACK THE BLUES OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the early Rolling Stones help popularize the Blues? OVERVIEW The Rolling Stones ultimately made their mark as the nonconformist outlaws of Rock and Roll. But before they were bad boys, the Stones were missionaries of the Blues. The young Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman — were white kids who hailed from working- and middle-class Britain and set out to play American music, primarily that of African Americans with roots in the South. In so doing, they helped bring this music to a new, largely white audience, both in Britain and the United States. The young men who formed the Rolling Stones emerged from the club scene fostered by British Blues pioneers Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner. These two men and their band, Blues Incorporated, helped popularize the American Blues, whose raw intensity resonated with a generation of Britons who had grown up in the shadow of war, death, the Blitz, postwar rationing, and the hardening of the Cold War standoff. Much of the Stones’ early work consisted of faithful covers of American Blues artists that Davies, Korner, and the Stones venerated: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed. The early Stones in particular helped make the Blues wildly popular among young Britons. As the Stones’ fame grew and they became part of the mid-1960s British “invasion” of America, they also reintroduced the Blues to American listeners, most notably young, white audiences with limited exposure to the music. But almost from day one, the Stones were more than a Blues cover band. -
The Roots Report: Beat the Heat with Cool Shows
The Roots Report: Beat the Heat with Cool Shows Okee dokee folks … It’s summer. I would be remiss if I didn’t reiterate my feelings about it. I hate summer. I am sorry. I know many of you folks like summer. I am not a fan of the heat and humidity. Fortunately, we are more than halfway through. Music makes the summer easier to deal with – for me anyway. There are still a lot of summer shows to catch while the weather is warm, though sometimes “warm” can be a bit of an understatement. Onward. The Downtown Sundown Series The Downtown Sundown Series has been steadily gaining a solid audience, mostly by word of mouth. Every show brings more folks who are amazed by the talent of the performers and the beauty of Roger Williams National Memorial. Now in its third year, this music series brings free music into downtown Providence two Saturdays per month. Already this season, performers such as WS Monroe, Billy Mitchell, Malyssa Bellarosa, Kala Farnham, Mark Cutler, Heather Rose, Tracie Potochnik, Bob Kendall, Jesse Liam and Jack Gauthier, and others have graced the park stage with their wonderful music. The middle lawn at the Memorial is the perfect spot for a sundown show. The music starts at 7 pm and continues until 9:30 pm, and four performers are featured at each show. The audience members sit back in lawn chairs, lie on blankets or directly on the grass and enjoy some of the best singer- songwriters from the area. Picnickers are welcomed and encouraged. -
What Is Happy Powys' Big Secret?
What is happy Powys' big secret? Carl Yapp BBC News website Plenty to smile about - Powys is rated the happiest place in the UK, according to a survey Powys is officially the happiest place in the UK, but what is its secret and is it really all it's cracked up to be? After all, the county's transport links and the lack of broadband and mobile phone coverage are regularly lambasted by frustrated residents. However, the people I spoke to in the towns of Llanfair Caereinion and Machynlleth didn't seem to care...much. Musician Ian Gomm exchanged the hustle and bustle of London for sleepy Llanfair, near Welshpool, 33 years ago. Part of cult rock band Brinsley Schwarz, he moved with his family to Powys when the group spilt in 1975. During his time with Brinsley Schwarz, he toured with Paul McCartney and Wings and later during a solo career he formed part of the bill during Dire Straits' first US tour. Since then, he joked, he had been forced to endure Powys' poor transport links, TV reception, mobile phone coverage, the lack of broadband, post offices closing and threats to the county's community hospitals. But despite all the drawbacks he said the county was a wonderful place to live. He added: "Shortly after moving to Powys our friends in London would say, 'What's it like where you live?' "We would say: 'It's horrible, stay In some ways the drawbacks add to the area's away' because we didn't want charm and that's why some people move here anyone to know how peaceful and relaxing it was in comparison to Ian Gomm, musician the rat race in London. -
