Confronted with government plans for using their polder for water retention during peak river discharges, they took the initiative to redesign their polder to make it suitable for water retention in a way that also made possible continuation of their agricultural enterprises. -

Gown Before Crown: Scholarly Abjection and Academic Entertainment Under Queen Elizabeth I Abstract In 1592, Queen Elizabeth I and the Privy Council made a rather audacious request of their intellectuals at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The hrC istmas season was fast approaching, and a recent outbreak of the plague prohibited the queen's professional acting company from performing the season's customary entertainment. To avoid having a Christmas without revels, the crown sent messengers to both institutions, asking for university men to come to court and perform a comedy in English. Cambridge's Vice Chancellor, John Still, wished to decline this royal invitation, and for advice on how to do so he wrote to his superior, William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who was not only the Chancellor of Cambridge but also Elizabeth's chief advisor. -

530 S PATIAL R ELATIONS a play’s star turns was by Harriet Roberts as the saucy and coquettish Julia, the Cardinal’s mistress. Her timing was excellent. Maybe the essence of this production’s tackling of the absurd contradic- tions in John Webster’s tragic revenge play was embodied in Mark Tilly’s Bosolo (‘a malcontent’) and his perversities. Tilly played Bosolo as both panto-villain and traumatized wrestler of split personality – a Jekyll and Hyde act that could have fallen flat on its face, but didn’t. In fact, insofar as he is the machine driving the plot and the ephemeral nature of ‘conscience’, I think he nailed Bosolo. A Picture of Doctor Faustus309 HE LEGENDARY STORY OF FAUST, the scholar and physician who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and insight into T the workings of the universe, and later from a lust for earthly passions and goods, is a central Western cultural metaphor and symbol for moral equi- vocation, false gain and inevitable punishment. It also has equivalents in other cultural spaces around the world, and has been adapted to illuminate a uni- versal human quandary in numerous reformulations through many geogra- phies and languages. What is so appealing about this tale that in many way derives from a crisis of church and state and indeed Christianity, in the late-fifteenth and the six- teenth century, that reaches a peak with Luther and his followers, and the violent break away from the Catholic church in the sixteenth century, is that it applies to the grand and the obscure, to the famous and the anonymous person, in equal measure. -

Whereas most discussions of this topic deal with the growth of religious idealism in romance, here I shall concentrate rather on the development of hagiography in the direction of rot:nance in the specific case of the legend of 5t George. In a classic series of articles published in the early years of this century, lE. Matzke documented the development of this legend from its earliest known forms to its 'romanticization' in the work of Richard Johnson at the end of the sixteenth century.2 What I wish to do here is to consider in more detail some later forms of the story (from the introduction of the dragon-fight onwards) and, in particular, to reassess the nature of the relationship between the story of St George in Johnson's Seven Champions a/Christendom and the Middle English romance of Sir Bevis 0/ Hampton. -

The Development of Crusading Historiography The crusades were from their inception seen from many different points of view, and every account and reference in the sources must be interpreted in the light of where, when, by whom, and in whose interests it was written.1 Each participant made his— and in few cases her—own crusade, and the leaders had their own interests, motives, and objectives, which often put them at odds with one another. They were all distrusted by the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos, whose point of view is presented in the Alexiad written in the middle of the twelfth century by his daughter Anna Komnene. The Turkish sultan Kilij Arslan naturally saw things from another perspective, as did the indigenous Christian populations in the east, especially the Armenians, and the peoples of the Muslim principalities of the eastern Mediterranean. The rulers of Edessa, Antioch, Aleppo, and Damascus, and beyond them Cairo and Baghdad, each had their own atti- tudes toward the crusades, which are reflected in the sources. To these must be added the peoples through whose lands the crusaders passed on their way to the east, and in particular the Jews who suffered at the hands of the followers of Peter the Hermit.2 The historiography of the crusades thus begins with the earliest accounts of their origins and history. -

Twins in Early Modern English Drama and Shakespeare
Downloaded by [New York University] at 04:46 12 April 2017 Twins in Early Modern English Drama and Shakespeare This volume investigates the early modern understanding of twinship through new readings of plays, informed by discussions of twins appear- ing in such literature as anatomy tracts, midwifery manuals, monstrous birth broadsides, and chapbooks. The book contextualizes such dramatic representations of twinship, investigating contemporary discussions about twins in medical and popular literature and how such dialogues resonate with the twin characters appearing on the early modern stage. Murray demonstrates that, in this period, twin births were viewed as biologically aberrant and, because of this classification, authors frequently attempted to explain the phenomenon in ways that call into question the moral and constitutional standing of both the parents and the twins themselves. In line with current critical studies on pregnancy and the female body, discussions of twin births reveal a distrust of the mother and the processes surrounding twin conception; however, a correspond- ing suspicion of twins also emerges, which monstrous birth pamphlets exemplify. This book analyzes the representation of twins in early mod- ern drama in light of this information, moving from tragedies through to comedies. This progression demonstrates how the dramatic potential inherent in the early modern understanding of twinship is capitalized on by playwrights, as negative ideas about twins can be seen transitioning into tragic and tragicomic depictions of twinship. However, by building toward a positive, comic representation of twins, the work additionally suggests an alternate interpretation of twinship in this period, which appreciates and celebrates twins because of their difference.
