Activities in the Area of Dressuurstal Van Baalen Activities in the area of Dressuurstal Van Baalen With this document we would like to inform you with the many activities and restaurants in the surrounding of Dressuurstal Van Baalen. Castle Loevestein Loevestein Castle is situated at a unique location where the river Meuse and Waal join together and the provinces of Gelderland, Brabant and South Holland meet. It was here, in this typically Dutch river landscape, that the knight Dirc Loef van Horne built his castle in 1361. His choice, however, was not determined by the area's outstanding beauty, but by its strategic position. It was the ideal location to defend and from which to levy tolls, and that is exactly what happened. Loevestein Castle is a unique spot where nature and culture unite as one. 2016 Provincie Noord Brabant/Radboud Universiteit Joris Broekmeulen, s4082206 VOTER TURNOUT IN THE NETHERLANDS: THE CASE OF NOORD BRABANT Supervisor: Drs. J.M. van de Walle Preface This master thesis was written as the final part of the master program Human Geography, specialization ‘Europe: Borders, Identities, and Governance’ at the Radboud University. It looks at voter turnout in Noord Brabant and specifically why it is so low in this province in particular. I would like to thank the province of Noord Brabant for the time that I spent there on my internship and for helping me throughout the process. In particular, I would like to thank Willem de Graaff of the research department for supervising my internship at the province of Noord Brabant. Furthermore, I would like to thank my thesis supervisor, Jackie van de Walle, for her counsel during my thesis project. These two people have been invaluable to me during the entire period. Joris Broekmeulen August 2016 2 Summary This thesis looks into the question of voter turnout in the province of Noord Brabant. For years and years, ballot attendance in Brabant has been exceptionally low, especially in comparison to other provinces in the Netherlands. What factors might explain this low voter turnout? What have previous scholars written about these phenomena? The thesis is subdivided into four sub questions, each of which tries to look into a different element of society that might explain voter turnout. These are the level of income, the level of education, religion, and voter participation. The entire research takes a positivist approach, which means that there is an objective world, in which certain things are true or not.

Introduction, town gate impressions 1.1 The oldest town gate of Gouda Town in Holland, the Tiendewegpoort (Tithe Road Gate) seen from the east, in about 1850. The brick defence walls, once left and right from the gate, have been demolished before 1840. The old Tithe Road Gate was multifunctional. It was an access to town and it housed the local women’s prison. This “gate prison” was a spinning house in which female convicts were forced to do hard labour. Behind the trees, left from the gate, a large building, the Arsenal, is visible. The Arsenal premises were the training-grounds where the local militia was being drilled. The gate itself was demolished in 1854, the militia building still exists.
