ANTIMICROBIAL/ LIVESTOCK DRUGS IN CALIFORNIA

Restricted Livestock Drug (RLD): Any livestock drug sold in a form that could be used by humans or any livestock drug which, if improperly administered to livestock, is dangerous to the health those livestock or to humans who consume products from those livestock. These drugs include but are not limited to non-medically important drugs, wormers, and hormones.

Restricted livestock drugs are labeled for over-the-counter sales and must be registered with the California Department Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to be sold in California. Retailers selling these restricted livestock drugs are required to be licensed by CDFA and comply with certain recordkeeping requirements.

Medically Important Antimicrobial Drug (MIAD): A type of antimicrobial livestock drug which, beginning January 1, 2018, must comply with additional requirements for sales and use in California*. MIADs include all critically important, highly important, and important antimicrobial drugs listed in Appendix A of the federal Food and Drug Administration’s Guidance for Industry #152.

MIADs and other drugs requiring a veterinary prescription are not covered under the California law for restricted livestock drugs. They may only be sold by retailers licensed by the California Board of Pharmacy.
