ABSTRACT A new leaf impression fl ora is described from late Miocene marly sediments (6-7.5 Ma) near the village of Vrysses in northwestern Crete, Greece. Th e stud- ied plant remains represent more than 30 taxa of conifers and angiosperms. Deciduous broad-leaved woody plants such as Acer pseudomonspessulanum, 5-lobed Acer, Ziziphus ziziphoides, “Parrotia” pristina, Populus tremula, Salix sp. and Juglandaceae, prevail in this leaf assemblage. Th ese plants are associated with sclerophyllous, evergreen taxa (Quercus mediterranea, Quercus sp., Buxus pliocenica and Pinus sp.) and a few subtropical Miocene elements (Daphnogene KEY WORDS Late Miocene, polymorpha, Tetraclinis sp.). Une nouvelle fl ore constituée d’empreintes foliaires a été découverte dans des sédiments du Miocène supérieur (6-7,5 Ma) près du village de Vrysses au nord de la Crète (Grèce). L’étude des restes de plantes concerne plus de 30 taxa de conifères et d’angiospermes. Des arbres feuillus décidus, tels qu’Acer pseudomons- pessulanum, Acer à cinq lobes, Ziziphus ziziphoides, “Parrotia” pristina, Populus tremula, Salix sp. et Juglandaceae, dominent cette paléofl ore. Ze/kova abelicea, a Tertiary relict species, is today restricted to Crete where it is scattered -in ali the main mountain massifs. It is a threatened species of which few old, fertile trees remain, and it is important that it be preserved. Heavy overgrazing now prevents the development of shrubby individuals into trees and jeopardizes regeneration through the seldom germinating seeds. The species has been studied for eight years, both in situ in its natural stands and in cultivation. In-vitro cloning using leaves, twigs, roots, seeds, and seedlings proved difficult due to bacterial infection of nearly ali plants. Just one of a hundred seedlings was not con­ taminated and was thus suited for vegetati ve propagation. Based on this study, concrete steps of a project for the preservation, multiplication and afforestation of Ze/kova are devised. Introduction Zelkova abelicea (Lam.) Boiss. is of eonsiderable seientifie interest as an E. Mediter­ ranean Tertiary reliet speeies. Until reeently (when a seeond, even rarer speeies was dis­ eovered in Sieily and deseribed as Z. sicula by Di Pasquale & al. 1992) it was eonsidered as the sole extant European representative of the otherwise Asian genus Zelkova of the Ulmaceae. It is endemie to Crete, where it is restrieted to the mountains.

    Reprinted from: The Maple Society Newsletter, Winter 2017 Vol 27/4 The Maple Collection at Arboretum Wespelaar, Belgium, with a special focus on some of the newer and rarer additions By Koen Camelbeke, Director, Arboretum Wespelaar It is indeed safe to say that the first dendrological passion of the founder of Arboretum Wespelaar, Philippe de Spoelberch, was for the genus Acer and rightly so! As we all know, this genus is really a joy at all times of year: flowers; new growth; colour and texture of emerging leaves in the Spring; variation in form and colour of leaves in the View across the lake at Arboretum Wespelaar, July 2013. Summer; autumn (Photo: Keith Montgomery) colours from late September to the end of November; and finally, the amazing range of bark textures and general tree habit which grace the winter months. When the Arboretum collection was started in the mid-1980s, the focus was on both botanical diversity as well as on aesthetics, especially focusing on autumn colour and Japanese maples. In the last decade or so, the focus shifted gradually to plants of known wild origin with the aim to present all of the species hardy in Belgium. Belgium is in this respect a wonderful country. Of course, as everywhere else, we also try to grow taxa which are more borderline in our climate, but, speaking of maples, Belgium has an excellent temperate, maritime climate influenced by the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Wespelaar is about 130km from the coast which means that our winters are somewhat colder and our summers hotter compared to the west of the country.

Sixty modern surface samples collected from mosses in different cypress forest communities (Cupressus sempervirens L.) on the island of Crete (Greece) were analysed for their pollen content. The samples were taken from six different cypress phytosociological associations between 23 and 1600 m asl, and fall within distinct rainfall and temperature regimes. The aims of this paper are to provide new data on the modern pollen rain from the Aegean islands, and to perform these data using multivariate statistics (hierarchical cluster analysis and canonical correspondence analysis) and pollen percentages. The discrimination of pollen assemblages corresponds to a large extent to the floristic differentiation of Cupressus sempervirens forest vegetation and indicates the existence of three new associations.
