Seasonal Variations of Subtropical Precipitation Associated with the Southern Annular Mode

HENDON,EUN-PA LIM, AND HANH NGUYEN Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne, Australia (Manuscript received 10 September 2013, in final form 20 January 2014) ABSTRACT Seasonal variations of subtropical precipitation anomalies associated with the southern annular mode (SAM) are explored for the period 1979–2011. In all seasons, high-polarity SAM, which refers to a poleward- shifted eddy-driven westerly jet, results in increased precipitation in high latitudes and decreased pre- cipitation in midlatitudes as a result of the concomitant poleward shift of the midlatitude storm track. In addition, during spring–autumn, high SAM also results in increased rainfall in the subtropics. This subtropical precipitation anomaly is absent during winter. This seasonal variation of the response of subtropical pre- cipitation to the SAM is shown to be consistent with the seasonal variation of the eddy-induced divergent meridional circulation in the subtropics (strong in summer and weak in winter). The lack of an induced divergent meridional circulation in the subtropics during winter is attributed to the presence of the wintertime subtropical jet, which causes a broad latitudinal span of eddy momentum flux divergence due primarily to higher phase speed eddies breaking poleward of the subtropical jet and lower speed eddies not breaking until they reach the equatorward flank of the subtropical jet. During the other seasons, when the subtropical jet is less distinctive, the critical line for both high and low speed eddies is on the equatorward flank of the single jet and so breaking in the subtropics occurs over a narrow range of latitudes. -

Bulletin 14 of the European Dry Grassland Group Introduction The spring has come at last. Soon, all European naturalists will be very busy with their fieldwork. Before this happens, however, we invite you to read this Bulletin issue, which presents several interesting contributions and news on the numerous EDGG activities. The number of EDGG members exceeded 800 last month. Soon, the key EDGG events will take place - the EDGG research expedition to Sicily (Italy) and the European Dry Grassland Meeting in Prespa (Greece). You can find the most topical information about their preparation on the following pages. You can learn about the development of four prepared special issues focussing on grasslands. You can also learn which grasslands belong to the biodiversity hotspots at small scales. Besides that, you can find here information on the upcoming meetings and events, three book reviews and numerous smaller announcements from our members. Maybe you will notice that in this issue we have used some new graphical elements. We hope you like the changes! To make this and the future Bulletins more user-friendly, we have also adopted some structural changes and developed a fixed sequence of sections. The longer contributions (reports and research articles) in the central part of the Bulletin will have the structure of normal scientific papers so that they could easily be printed, posted and shared as separate items. Parsons Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Manuscript received 5 December 2019, in final form 20 April 2020) ABSTRACT Higher precipitation is expected over most of the world’s continents under climate change, except for a few specific regions where models project robust declines. Among these, the Mediterranean stands out as a result of the magnitude and significance of its winter precipitation decline. Locally, up to 40% of winter precipitation could be lost, setting strong limits on water resources that will constrain the ability of the region to develop and grow food, affecting millions of already water-stressed people and threatening the stability of this tense and complex area. To this day, however, a theory explaining the special nature of this region as a climate change hot spot is still lacking. Regional circulation changes, dominated by the development of a strong anomalous ridge, are thought to drive the winter precipitation decline, but their origins and potential con- tributions to regional hydroclimate change remain elusive. Here, we show how wintertime Mediterranean circulation trends can be seen as the combined response to two independent forcings: robust changes in large- scale, upper-tropospheric flow and the reduction in the regional land–sea temperature gradient that is characteristic of this region. In addition, we discuss how the circulation change can account for the magnitude and spatial structure of the drying. Our findings pave the way for better understanding and improved mod- eling of the future Mediterranean hydroclimate. -

ADAMSON Historical documents from tropical regions contain weather information that can be used to reconstruct past climate variability, the occurrence of tropical storms, and El Niño and La Niña episodes. n comparison with the Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes, the nature of long-term climatic I variability in the tropics and subtropics is poorly understood. This is due primarily to a lack of meteo- rological data. Few tropical countries have continuous records extending back much further than the late nineteenth century. Within Africa, for example, re- cords become plentiful for Algeria in the 1860s and for South Africa in the 1880s (Nicholson et al. 2012a,b). In India, a network of gauging stations was established by the 1870s (Sontakke et al. 2008). However, despite the deliberations of the Vienna Meteorological Congress of 1873, for many other nations, systematic meteo- rological data collection began only in the very late nineteenth or early twentieth century. To reconstruct climate parameters for years prior to the instrumental period, it is necessary to use proxy indicators, either “manmade” or natural. ABSTRACT A new leaf impression fl ora is described from late Miocene marly sediments (6-7.5 Ma) near the village of Vrysses in northwestern Crete, Greece. Th e stud- ied plant remains represent more than 30 taxa of conifers and angiosperms. Deciduous broad-leaved woody plants such as Acer pseudomonspessulanum, 5-lobed Acer, Ziziphus ziziphoides, “Parrotia” pristina, Populus tremula, Salix sp. and Juglandaceae, prevail in this leaf assemblage. Th ese plants are associated with sclerophyllous, evergreen taxa (Quercus mediterranea, Quercus sp., Buxus pliocenica and Pinus sp.) and a few subtropical Miocene elements (Daphnogene KEY WORDS Late Miocene, polymorpha, Tetraclinis sp.). A regional vegetation reconstruction is developed Crete, based on the ecological affi nities of the nearest living relatives. Spring 2014 Page 1 Botanic Garden News The Botanic Garden Volume 17, No. 1 of Smith College Spring 2014 Orchidelirium at Smith Madelaine Zadik K aren Yu ’16 is a STRIDE scholar who has worked with me since 2012 on educational projects and exhibitions at the Botanic Garden. As a first year, Karen learned about the workings of the Botanic Garden, our plant collections, and our various educational activities, including exhibit production. The plan was that by the end of her two-year STRIDE placement, she would produce an exhibit of her own. She had to hit the ground running, as the exhibit Botanical Printing: Artful Collaborations on Paper and Cloth opened just a month and a half after her arrival. Karen wrote label copy and press releases, learned mounting techniques, helped design the gallery layout with our modular walls, and learned how to use our unique hanging system in the Church Exhibition Gallery. For our next exhibit, From Petals to Paper: Poetic Inspiration from Flowers, Karen was involved in the many months of planning leading up to the installation in March 2013. When given a choice of possible exhibit topics for her own project, Karen chose to use a collection of orchid prints by artist Florence Helen Woolward to create an exhibit that would help illuminate the world of orchids for the visiting public. The prints are from Thesaurus Woolwardiae, Orchids of the Marquis of Lothian, which contained reproductions of 60 of Woolward’s orchid paintings. Woolward produced an impressive body of work, especially considering that she was never formally trained in either art or botany. -

Kakori, Lucknow-226101, Uttar Pradesh, India *Corresponding Author: [email protected] [Accepted: 26 December 2017] Abstract: Pepino (Solanum muricatum) is an Andean region’s crop, originated from South America. The crop has medicinal values and underutilized for its cultivation. It has a wider adaptability across the different locations of Spain, New Zealand, Turkey, Israel, USA, Japan etc. The crop can be grown under diverse soil and climatic conditions in India also. Its fruits are juicy, mild-sweet, sub-acidic and aromatic berry which are rich in antiglycative, antioxidant, dietary fibres and low calorific energy. Fruit is visually attractive with golden yellow colour with purple stripes. The crop was evaluated for its growth and development at ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, Rehmankhera, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India (planted in the month of October, 2014). Ze/kova abelicea, a Tertiary relict species, is today restricted to Crete where it is scattered -in ali the main mountain massifs. It is a threatened species of which few old, fertile trees remain, and it is important that it be preserved. Heavy overgrazing now prevents the development of shrubby individuals into trees and jeopardizes regeneration through the seldom germinating seeds. The species has been studied for eight years, both in situ in its natural stands and in cultivation. In-vitro cloning using leaves, twigs, roots, seeds, and seedlings proved difficult due to bacterial infection of nearly ali plants. Just one of a hundred seedlings was not con taminated and was thus suited for vegetati ve propagation. Based on this study, concrete steps of a project for the preservation, multiplication and afforestation of Ze/kova are devised. Introduction Zelkova abelicea (Lam.) Boiss. is of eonsiderable seientifie interest as an E. Mediter ranean Tertiary reliet speeies. Until reeently (when a seeond, even rarer speeies was dis eovered in Sieily and deseribed as Z. sicula by Di Pasquale & al. 1992) it was eonsidered as the sole extant European representative of the otherwise Asian genus Zelkova of the Ulmaceae. It is endemie to Crete, where it is restrieted to the mountains. -
