Territory – from the Altai mountains in the east to the Black Sea in the west, from the upper Yenisei in the north to the upper Amu Darya in the south. At the beginning of the VI century, the territory of Kazakhstan came under the authority of the Turkic Kaganate. Turkic Kaganate is the first state in Kazakhstan. Its basis was the union of Turkic-speaking tribes, which was headed by the kagan. The state, based on tribal traditions, was based on military-administrative management. It was part of a system of relations with such major states of the time as Iran and Byzan- tium. China was a tributary of the kaganate. The title in many cultures played the role of an important indicator of the international prestige of the state. As is known, only members of the Ashin clan had the sacred right to supreme power in the Turkic Kaganate. Possession of one or another title, occupation of one or another place in the political and state structure of society, depended on many circumstances, the main of which was belonging to a particular tribe in a tribal union, clan in a tribe, etc. Social deter- minants (titles, ranks, positions), as the most significant components of ancient Turkic anthroponomy, contained complete information about the social status of the bearer of a given name, its origin and membership in a particular layer of society, data on its place in the political structure of society and the administrative structure . -

Firstly, I prepared the inventory of Old Turkic runic manucripts. Now, there are 46 Old Turkic runic manuscripts with catalogue numbers which are preserved in Germany, England, Japan, Russia, and France. Also, I gave the transliteration, transcription and the Turkish translation of these manuscripts. Among these manuscripts, the voluminous one is the omen book, Irk Bitig. I also gave some remarks on this book. In these notes, I dealt with linguistic features of Irk Bitig parallel to Old Turkic. At the end of this study, I gave the vocabulary of Old Turkic runic manuscripts. -

Shamans Emerging From Repression in Siberia: Lightning Rods of Fear and Hope Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer Georgetown University, USA To honor the broad ranging legacy of Åke Hultkranz, this article focuses on the changing social and political ramifications of in- digenous people’s spiritual revitalization in Siberia. My approach balances Hultkrantz’s sensitivity to commonalities of shamanism throughout the circumpolar North with attention to more specific aspects of shamanistic practices and beliefs in Far Eastern Siberia, especially the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), over time. Shamans and shamanic prophets can be found in many kinds of communities, from rural Siberia to Native North America to urban Korea. Over-generalizations behind standard or “ideal type” distinctions among “shamans,” “priests,” and “prophets” limit our under- standing of the richness of shamanic cultural traditions. Research featured here is based on long-term fieldwork, many re- turn trips to Siberia over the past thirty-five years, and work with the Sakha diaspora. It analyses the resurgence of post-Soviet sha- manic healing practices, the organization of an Association of Folk Medicine, and shamanic leadership in an ecology activist movement. Shamans explain that their crucial imperative to heal and protect their clients and communities survived the Soviet period. Shamans and others, by adapting shamanic belief systems, can engage, if not soothe, the legacies of social as well as personal suffering. Yet many shamans were killed or repressed in the Soviet period, rituals were suppressed, and the reputations of shamans have long been ambigu- ous, depending on whom they protect and how. In socially fraught, crisis-ridden contexts, the personal becomes political. -

They are the only three cultures that have developed and preserved the religio-philosophical concept of Integral Dualism, viz. ś ukram-kr̥ sṇ aṃ or yang-yin (see Note 1). And the existing linguistic data firmly supports the above thesis. Key Words: l-forms, l-formant, l-participles, ping, apple, kolo Introduction In spite of persistent skepticism among so called Proto-Indo-Europeanists, in recent years many scholars made attempts at detecting the genetic relationship between Old Chinese and Proto-Indo-European languages (e.g. T.T. Chang, R.S. Bauer, J.X. Zhou, J.L. Wei, etc.), but they proposed solely lexical correspondences with no morphological ones at all. However, there indeed exist some very important morphological correspondences too. The L-Forms in Chinese In Modern Standard Mandarin Chinese there is a particle spelled le and a verb spelled liao, both functioning as verb-suffixes and represented in writing by identical characters. Some researchers hold that the particle le actually derived from liao since “the verb liao (meaning “to finish, complete”), found at the end of the Eastern Han (25-220 CE) and onwards, around Wei and Jin Dynasties (220-581 CE) along with other verbs meaning “to finish” such as jing, qi, yi and bi started to occur in the form Verb (Object) + completive to indicate the completion of the action indicated by the main verb. -

Title: Preliminary Proposal to Encode the Tocharian Script Author: Lee Wilson ([email protected]) Date: 2015-01-26 1 Introduction Tocharian is a Brahmi-based script historically used to write the Tocharian languages (ISO 639-3: xto, txb), traditionally referred to as Tocharian A and Tocharian B, which belong to the Tocharian branch of the Indo-European language family. The script was in use primarily during the 8th century CE by the people inhabiting the northern edge of the Tarim Basin of the Taklamakan Desert in what is now Xinjiang in western China, an area formerly known as Turkestan. The Tocharian script is attested in over 4,000 extant manuscripts that were discovered in the early 20th century in the Tarim Basin. The discovery was significant for two reasons: first, it revealed a previously unknown branch of the Indo-European language family, and second, it marked the easternmost geographical extent of that language family. The most distinctive aspect of Tocharian script is the vowel transcribed as ä, commonly known as the Fremdvokal, and the modifications to the script that it entails. This vowel is indicated with a vowel sign not employed in scripts outside of the Tarim Basin region. However, this vowel sign is not commonly used when writing Tocharian. Instead, sequences of a consonant followed by the Fremdvokal are most typically indicated by 11 CV signs known as Fremdzeichen, which are unique to Tocharian. 2 Background The Tocharian script is a north-eastern descendant of Brahmi script, related to Khotanese, Tibetan, and Siddham scripts, which was used along the Tarim Basin in the Taklamakan Desert in what is now Xinjiang in western China. -

For several centuries, many scholars of various specialties have been interested in “Avesta”. In numerous comments they discussed the history of the appearance of the book and its hymns, the personality of Zarathustra, his homeland, geographical objects, historical characters and mythological images, the ideological basis of the collection of holy books, etc. Many of the above mentioned questions are still being discussed among specialists, causing and over-colouring certain problems. In their work, the authors tried to find something in common between the “Avesta” and the Kazakh literature, exploring the spiritual relationship of the “Avesta” with the mythology of the people. As practice shows, various phenomena in the folklore of the peoples of the world are experiencing their birth, formation, flourishing, decay and death. -

Indo-European languages and branches Language Relations One of the first hurdles anyone encounters in studying a foreign language is learning a new vocabulary. Faced with a list of words in a foreign language, we instinctively scan it to see how many of the words may be like those of our own language.We can provide a practical example by surveying a list of very common words in English and their equivalents in Dutch, Czech, and Spanish. A glance at the table suggests that some words are more similar to their English counterparts than others and that for an English speaker the easiest or at least most similar vocabulary will certainly be that of Dutch. The similarities here are so great that with the exception of the words for ‘dog’ (Dutch hond which compares easily with English ‘hound’) and ‘pig’ (where Dutch zwijn is the equivalent of English ‘swine’), there would be a nearly irresistible temptation for an English speaker to see Dutch as a bizarrely misspelled variety of English (a Dutch reader will no doubt choose to reverse the insult). When our myopic English speaker turns to the list of Czech words, he discovers to his pleasant surprise that he knows more Czech than he thought. The Czech words bratr, sestra,and syn are near hits of their English equivalents. Finally, he might be struck at how different the vocabulary of Spanish is (except for madre) although a few useful correspondences could be devised from the list, e.g. English pork and Spanish puerco. The exercise that we have just performed must have occurred millions of times in European history as people encountered their neighbours’ languages. -

Ecstatic Space NEO-KUT and Shamanic Technologies A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Haein Song Department of Arts and Humanities College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Brunel University, London May 2018 Abstract The present thesis formulates an approach towards ecstatic space in the context of a combined performance of kut, a Korean shamanic performance ritual, and digital practices. Here, the coined term, ecstatic space, is not confined to the mental state or spiritual sphere of shamans in a trance but indicates an alternative and metaphoric environment mediatised by ecstatic technology – a vehicle for conjuring the mythical worlds of kut via shamanic media including divine objects, dancing and singing rituals. This research also adopts digital technology, a modern approach for accessing imaginary virtual space through digital media, especially technical images – the technologically produced and programmed/computational images. Ecstatic space enables the creation of interstitial and fecund space situated between performer/audience reality and imaginary spheres, representing the technological aesthetics in- between kut and digital performance. This enabling is theoretically and historically grounded in media and performance/ritual frameworks that are explored in the early chapters of the thesis. Ecstatic space contextualises through the careful exposition of Korean scholarship on kut, and shamanic performance rituals read and interpreted alongside international performance/cultural studies and media theories including Vilém Flusser, Marshall McLuhan, Guy Debord, Roy Ascott and others. My methodologies of creating ecstatic space are formulated by investigating the artistic potential of an interpenetrative relationship between these two technologies. The five core SUI (Shamanic User Interface) designs of kut are identified to outline an embodied understanding of the ecstatic technology.
