  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.

  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Since its launch in 1982, the Marco Polo label has for over twenty years sought to draw attention to unexplored repertoire.␣ Its main goals have been to record the best music of unknown composers and the rarely heard works of well-known composers.␣ At the same time it originally aspired, like Marco Polo himself, to bring something of the East to the West and of the West to the East. For many years Marco Polo was the only label dedicated to recording rare repertoire.␣ Most of its releases were world première recordings of works by Romantic, Late Romantic and Early Twentieth Century composers, and of light classical music. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again, particularly those whose careers were affected by political events and composers who refused to follow contemporary fashions.␣ Of particular interest are the operas by Richard Wagner’s son Siegfried, who ran the Bayreuth Festival for so many years, yet wrote music more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck. To Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich, Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan), and Bruder Lustig, which further explores the mysterious medieval world of German legend is now added Der Heidenkönig (The Heathen King).␣ Other German operas included in the catalogue are works by Franz Schreker and Hans Pfitzner. Earlier Romantic opera is represented by Weber’s Peter Schmoll, and by Silvana, the latter notable in that the heroine of the title remains dumb throughout most of the action.

Two Personas A Comparative Study of the Functions of Music in Ingmar Bergman’s Film Persona (1966) and Grus Grus Theatre’s Stage Adaptation of the Film (2013) Niklas Nybom, 32304 Master’s Thesis in Musicology Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology Supervisor: Johannes Brusila Åbo Akademi 2015 ÅBO AKADEMI – FAKULTETEN FÖR HUMANIORA, PSYKOLOGI OCH TEOLOGI Abstrakt för avhandling pro gradu Ämne: Musikvetenskap Författare: Niklas Nybom Arbetets titel: Two Personas: A Comparative Study of the Functions of Music in Ingmar Bergman’s Film Persona (1966) and Grus Grus Theatre’s Stage Adaptation of the Film (2013) Handledare: Johannes Brusila Handledare: Iscensättningar av filmer har blivit ett populärt inslag i teatrarnas utbud.

Wild Strawberries / Smultronstället, 1957 “Where is the Friend I seek where’er I’m going? Johan Olof Wallin, 1819 hymn Major Credits: Director and Screenplay: Ingmar Bergman Cinematographer: Gunnar Fischer Music: Erik Nordgren Cast: Victor Sjöström (Isak Borg), Bibi Andersson (Sara), Ingrid Thulin (Marianne), Gunnar Björnstrand (Evald), Naima Wifstrand (Isak’s mother), Jullan Kindahl (Agda), Gunnar Sjöberg (Alman), Gunnel Broström (Berit), Gertrude Fridh (Karin, Isak’s wife), Åke Fridell (Karin’s lover), Max von Sydow (Åkerman, gas station owner) Production Background: Wild Strawberries was created during a particularly busy and stressful time in Bergman’s life. In addition to directing plays at the state theater in Malmo, he was still brooding over the collapse of his third marriage (to Gun Grut), the recent breakup with Bibi Andersson, and his ongoing estrangement from his parents. And yet, the film was produced during the same year as another of his masterpieces, The Seventh Seal! Bergman wrote the script while he was hospitalized for nearly two months for a psychosomatic illness, ostensibly an ulcer. He consciously gave the protagonist, Isak Borg, his own initials but created him in the image of his father, Erik Bergman. Years later, he came to see the film as truly belonging to Victor Sjöström, the 77 year old patriarch of Swedish cinema and young Bergman’s mentor at Svensk Filmindustri. Like the wagon that transports the desperate troupe through the storm in The Seventh Seal, the hearse that appears in Isak’s dream at the beginning of the film is an homage to Sjöström’s silent classic, The Phantom Chariot (1921), which Bergman has described as “the most remarkable film” he has ever seen.

  • Ingmar Bergman – His Autobiography the Magic
INGMAR BERGMAN – HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY THE MAGIC LANTERN Ingmar Bergman is considered by many to be the world’s greatest living film director and is also internationally well known as a theatre, television and opera director. He was born in 1918 in Uppsala, Sweden, and studied at Stockholm University. From 1943 to 1946 he was a producer and scriptwriter for Svensk Filmindustri and, later, Artistic Adviser. He has directed at theatres throughout Sweden as well as abroad and was Head of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm from 1963 to 1966. His many films include The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, Persona, The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, Face to Face, Autumn Sonata, The Serpent’s Egg, From the Life of the Marionettes and Fanny and Alexander, winner of four Academy Awards. Ingmar Bergman has received many international awards and prizes for his films, including the Goethe Prize in 1976 and the Swedish Gold Medal in 1977. I When I was born in 1918, my mother had Spanish influenza. I was in a bad way and was baptized as a precaution at the hospital. One day the family was visited by the old house doctor, who looked at me and said: ‘He’s dying of under nourishment.’ My maternal grandmother took me with her to her summer house in Dalarna, and on the train journey, which in those days took a whole day; she fed me with sponge cake soaked in water. By the time we finally arrived, I was practically dead, but Grandmother managed to find a wet nurse — a kindly, fair-haired girl from a neighbouring village.

  • Ingmar Bergman
