1 Sunder Lal (1923-87) Anil K Rajvanshi [email protected] Sunder chachaji as I used to call him was a very dear friend of my father Jagdish Rajvanshi. They both were fellow students in Allahabad University and plunged into the freedom movement in 1942 for which they went to jail. Sunder Lal was one of the stalwarts of Congress Party. He was the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) of India in the First General Election of 1952 and won all his Lok Sabha elections till 1977. My earliest recollection of him was his regular visit to our house in Hazratganj. Anytime he came to Lucknow from Delhi he would stay with us. Though his elder brother Choudhary Girdhari Lal was an important minister in UP cabinet and stayed in Lucknow but Sunder chachaji always stayed in our house. He never married and always considered me as his son. He used to tell me later on that when I was a year old and teething, he was visiting us in Lucknow and one day whole night he carried me on his shoulders to lull me to sleep so that I would not cry. Another early recollection of him was his eating tandoori chicken in our living room. Since my mother was a vegetarian, no meat was cooked in our house. The tandoori chicken was procured from Salam Hotel on Nawal Kishore Road. He used to also drink and always brought his own whiskey. I used to be curious as to what he is drinking, and he would tell me it is medicine! ©Anil K Rajvanshi.

Having developed political interests since student days, he came into active politics under the advice and influence of his socialist mentor Acharya Narendra Deva. He began his Parliamentary career from Rajya Sabha where he remained a member for three terms. Afterwards he got elected to Lok Sabha where he remained a member for eight terms. Having an abiding faith in the rules and procedure of Parliament and respect for the decorum and discipline in the House, he earned the honour of an Outstanding Parliamentarian. His amiable disposition, command over various subjects and practical approach to national and international issues was appreciated from the different quarters in Parliament. With a long political record to his credit, he became the Prime Minister of India in 1990. As Prime Minister and a towering leader of the country, he left his mark as a statesman in various spheres of the country, though he remained in the same office for a short period. R. CHANDRASEKHARAN CONGRESS AN EPIC CANTO NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT, INTUC According to historians Indian History starts with Dravidian culture, contains the origin of Dravida, Arya, Vedic, Upanishath period. It is also the history of Budha - Jaina religion, Arab - Europen Migration and their invade and also at the end freedom struggle. This the attainment of free India. India was under various empires, Kingdom and lords. The battle and wars between these forces, lead the life of the common people in a very miserable and pathetic conditions. In 1498 when Vasco da Gama a Portuguese explorer landed at Kozhikode, Kerala, the invade of Europans started and following to Portuguese, Duch, French and British People reached for trade and business of spices. In the Trade and Business, they fought each other even with modern weapons and established each one of them the business in a big way. Economically they looted the Indian People in business and trades. Most of the empires, kings and lords were in the habit of luxurious lives as the Europans showed the way and taught. It is very unbelievable today that a private company called East India Company ruled our great nation for a century after the battle of Plassy in Bengal. Due to the atrocity of East India Company, the mutiny of Sipoy in 1857 lead the way for British rule in India. Following the company rule, another centurian British rule for 90 years existed in India that was very inhuman in nature and generation to generation the people were exploited. They treated the people as slaves and buggers.

  • The Soaring Mrs G
COVER STORY NEWSMAKER 2004 SONIA GANDHI IT WAS A COMPELLING SAGA IN POLITICAL EVOLUTION AS SONIA GANDHI EMERGED AS THE POWER ABOVE THE THRONE The Soaring Mrs G ■ By Prabhu Chawla Long before the tsunami that devastated the coastal life of India and other parts of Asia, there was a tidal wave called Sonia Gandhi. It too originated in a subterranean crack-up, deep under the saffron idyll, and the multiplying fury swept aside the pretence of infallibility. When the force receded, the political shore was littered with the wreckage of an arrogance called the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sonia, for so long an accidental Gandhi who symbolised stagnation, stood amidst the debris, shining and soaring, as the woman who brought back to life a party that almost every professional doomsayer—and its own disillusioned legion—thought was beyond revival. The leader rearmed was a foreign-born Gandhi, ready to redefine politics and dictate the governance of over a billion people. This Gandhi too earned a slice of history and is determined to shape it. In the last days of 2004, when the tsunami was not a metaphor but an awesome reality that took a toll of more than 12,000 lives across the southern shores of India, it was Sonia who took charge of disaster management. As the prime minister was getting the first reports of the tragedy at his residence at 3 Race Course Road, 3 km away at 10 Janpath, the lady was already working the phones and mobilising the relief force. On December 26, barely 15 minutes after the first killer wave hit the shores, cabinet ministers Mani Shankar Aiyar and Dayanidhi Maran were instructed by her office to leave for the worst affected areas, and the two continued to take instructions even while boarding the flight to Chennai.

review Rani Singh, Sonia Gandhi: An Extraordinary Life, An Indian Destiny Palgrave Macmillan: New York 2011, $26, hardback 268 pp, 978 0 230 10441 9 Kheya Bag DELHI’S DYNASTS Ranked as one of the worst countries in the world to be a woman, India could be one of the best places to be a female politician. There have been powerful state Chief Ministers—Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh, Mamata in West Bengal, Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu—and the vociferous leader of the opposition in parliament is the bjp’s Sushma Swaraj. Though they might all eye the pre- miership, the paramount figure in their midst has demurred the post. The life and career of Mrs Sonia Gandhi take identity politics to another level. The ‘Italian housewife’ elevated to power by dint of being Rajiv Gandhi’s widow—and sole survivor of the family’s post-Indira generation—has suc- ceeded in turning her position as longest-serving president of the Congress Party into that of informal head of state. In 2010, as Rani Singh notes in the first internationally pitched biography, Beijing’s diplomatic service ranked her as equivalent to President Hu in protocol, senior to Premier Wen. Singh is a London-based journalist, for many years a bbc presenter. Her book lacks the stylistic flair of Manjulika Dubey, the Delhi spin-mistress responsible for ghosting Sonia’s own memoir—duly titled Rajiv—and has none of the insider factional detail that enlivens Sonia: A Biography (2009) by the Kolkata Telegraph’s Rasheed Kidwai. Singh apparently failed to extract anything from her subject when they met, and instead relies heavily on quotes from sympathetic Indian columnists and the insights of Sonia’s interior designer, while the bbc’s Mark Tully supplies the political analysis.
