Introducción de los Coordinadores de la Obra 12 13 Palabras del Cónsul General de Italia en La Plata, Iacopo FOTI La Plata, abril de 2018 Es para mí, realmente, un gran placer intro- ducir con estas palabras esta importante publi- cación que finaliza un largo trabajo llevado ade- lante con el Coordinador del Centro de Estudios Italianos de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), Juan Carlos Pérsico, y que tiene como ob- jetivo documentar y analizar algunos ámbitos de la relación bilateral entre Italia y la Argentina. El Centro, que se creó el 8 de mayo de 2015 como resultado de la colaboración entre el Con- sulado General de Italia de La Plata y el Instituto de Relaciones Internacionales (IRI) de la Univer- sidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), en estos dos primeros años de vida realizó numerosas activi- dades (conferencias, seminarios, jornadas etc.) y constituyó un punto de referencia muy importante para los estudiantes, investigadores y todos aquellos que tenían interés en profundizar sus conocimientos sobre la realidad de Italia haciendo particular atención a su relación bilateral con Argentina y con América Latina. El Centro representó, también, un espacio muy importante para el Consulado General de Italia ya que a través del mismo logramos difundir de manera orgánica y sistemática las distintas oportunidades que el Gobierno Italiano, por intermedio del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y de la Cooperación Internacional (MAECI) y del Ministerio de Educación, Universidad e Investigación (MIUR), ofrece cada año en términos de becas, intercambios y proyectos de investigación. En estos últimos años, las relaciones bilaterales entre Italia y Argentina vivieron un momento de gran intensidad, marcado con numerosas visitas y misiones institucionales de ambas partes y con la firma de numerosos convenios de colaboración y acuerdos de cooperación en distintos sectores. En esta perspectiva se coloca, por ejemplo, la histórica visita oficial que el Presidente de la República Italiana, Sergio Mattarella, realizó en Argentina en el mes de mayo de 2017 y de la cual fui un testigo privilegiado. Espero que esta publicación, que no tiene la ambición de ser de ninguna manera exhaustiva, pueda representar una herramienta más para comprender y promover el conocimiento de los vínculos y de los lazos sobre los cuales se basa la relación bilateral entre Italia y Argentina. Espero, además, que este trabajo pueda contribuir a consolidar y reforzar estas relaciones que representan para ambos Países una riqueza extraordi- naria que hay que preservar, no solo en el recuerdo del pasado sino, y sobre todo, hacia el futuro. Para finalizar, mis más sinceros agradecimientos al Prof. Juan Carlos Pérsico con el cual hemos com- partido en estos meses muchas horas de trabajo, al Director del Instituto de Relaciones Internacionales (IRI) Norberto Consani, como también a todas la personas que colaboraron con sus ensayos, ideas y reflexiones para que esta importante publicación se pudiera llevar a cabo. Un gran saludo a todos, Iacopo FOTI Cónsul General de Italia en La Plata 14 15 Palabras del Coordinador de Centro de Estudios Italianos (IRI-UNLP), Juan Carlos PÉRSICO La Plata, abril de 2018 El Centro de Estudios Italianos fue creado en el mes de mayo del año 2015 en el ámbito del Instituto de Re- laciones Internacionales (IRI) de la Facultad de Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales de la Universidad Nacional de La Pla- ta (UNLP), constituyéndose de este modo un espacio aca- démico cuyo objetivo es profundizar el conocimiento de los diferentes aspectos que componen la realidad italiana, como ser los jurídicos, políticos, económicos, sociales, cul- turales, pero especialmente desde dicho lugar abordar la histórica y estrecha relación que siempre han mantenido los pueblos italiano y argentino, y proyectar la misma hacia el futuro para beneficio mutuo de ambas Naciones. Al relevar las publicaciones existentes sobre la rela- ción Italia-Argentina surge que la enorme mayoría de ellas se refiere al proceso migratorio acaecido a fines del siglo XIX y principios de siglo XX, no habiendo muchas que anali- cen lo ocurrido en los últimas décadas, y precisamente eso es lo que se aborda en la mayoría de los ensayos que inte- gran esta obra, haciendo la salvedad que tres de ellos tra- tan la historia que une a los dos países, cuyo conocimiento es fundamental para comprender cabal e integralmente la vinculación actual entre ambas Repúblicas. Por supuesto que quedan por abordar muchas más temáticas que componen la relación bilateral, por lo que esta obra no pretende ser en modo alguno completa y definitiva, sino más bien dar un primer paso que sirva de impulso para que se comiencen a publicar muchas más sobre la relación ítalo-argentina en la actualidad. Cabe recordar, que en una de sus visitas a la Argentina, el gran pensador y filósofo español Julián Ma- rías, nos dijo a los argentinos: “¿Vosotros sois conscientes de que habitáis la única república ítalo-española del planeta?, acotando a la pregunta que efectuara: “Es un privilegio que los demás pueblos del mundo no podemos dejar de envidiarles”. Por tal motivo, dada la singularidad y excepcionalidad de nuestra relación, los argentinos e italianos debemos darnos cuenta de la “gran riqueza en común” que poseemos, y trabajar en conjunto, más unidos que nunca, frente a los enormes desafíos que nos presenta el mundo del siglo XXI, para lograr el bien común de ambos pueblos. Arnson Director, Latin American Program Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars In late January, Argentine government officials finally had some encouraging data that a long hoped-for economic rebound might actually be materializing. Figures from the national statistics agency INDEC showed that month-on-month economic activity went up 1.4 percent between October and November, the second straight month of increase. An internal government document leaked to Clarín in January estimated that growth had increased by close to one percent in the last quarter of 2016. While this was a far cry from the optimistic scenario painted by former Finance Minister Alfonso Prat-Gay, who was sacked last December, the numbers are feeding a narrative by the government of President Mauricio Macri that the Argentine economy is on a clear path to recovery. According to Minister of Production Francisco Cabrera, “all the conditions are in place for Argentina to grow between 3.5 and five percent” in 2017. The numbers may be exaggerated, but with elections taking place in October 2017 to renew a third of the Senate and half the House, the Macri government has every reason to emphasize the positive. The economy shrank during Macri’s first year in office—by 1.8 percent, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), or as much as 2.3 percent, according to World Bank figures. Inflation is widely estimated at 40 percent although the rate of increase has begun to slow.

    The twelfth generation The most prominent figures of the 12th generation are Lodovico (of the green line of Valmadrera), and Giuseppe (of the blue line of Egidio). Both were to become Senators of the Kingdom. 10The Giuseppe mentioned above was my grandfather, and was the one who had the most success in entrepreneurial activities outside of the family’s traditional silk business. Also of interest are the lives of certain women of this generation, especially that of the wife of Count Belgiojoso, Ernestina, or Auntie Mamà, as she was called. The story of Giuseppe’s younger brother, Luigi, is reserved for the next chapter. PIERO GAVAZZI (1854-1932) Piero was born in Milan on August 8, 1854, and died there on May 4, 1932. He graduated in engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan in 1875. Besides running the Pietro Gavazzi Company, it is he who was responsible for the founding and setting up of Gavazzi & Co., which manufactured ribbons and trimmings in pure silk and blended silk for hat factories. His address was Via Giuseppe Verdi no. 6 in Milan but he lived for some time with his brother Lodovico at n. 37, Via Monte Napoleone, and also in Valmadrera. The Gavazzi & Co. Ribbon Manufacturers This was a very successful company indeed. Interesting facts can be read about it in the infor- mation sheet of the 1900 Universal Exhibition of Paris. The company, based at no. 57, Foro Bonaparte, Milan, was established in 1881 and registered on February 7, 1882 by Lodovico in the General Register of Dealers and Tradesmen – Arts and Commerce.

Abstract Platyceps rhodorachis (JAN, 1863) is a euryoecious polytypic racer distributed from NE Iraq to Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan) and the Himalayas (probably westernmost Nepal). The nominotypical subspecies, occupying most of the species’ range, is polymorphic. The typical (striped) phe- notype is absent from certain peripheral areas. Notable geographic variation is observed in the number of ventrals, subcaudals, dorsal scales, or maxillary teeth and in the colour pattern. P. r. ladacensis (ANDERSON, 1871) is only found from the eastern Hindu Kush into northern Himachal Pradesh (India). Its presence south of the Zanskar Range requires confirmation and the status of the Ladakh Cliff Racer is debatable. The identity and systematic position of racers from the vicinity of Ahvaz (Khuzestan) as well as Arabian and southern Red Sea populations commonly assigned to P. rhodorachis pend further investigation. Platyceps semifasciatus BLYTH, 1860 is a senior subjective synonym of P. rhodorachis (nomen protectum, valid type species of Platyceps BLYTH). P. ventromaculatus (GRAY, 1834) from the Makran coast to low-lying NW India and Nepal, for a long time confused with Jan’s Cliff Racer (P.
