Summary

The Intensive English Program (IEP) in the International English and Professional Programs (IEPP) provides a fast-paced, supportive environment for students to improve their English proficiency and build their confidence in using English in both academic and social situations. Students can expect to make significant progress each quarter to achieve their goals. The program works with students at every level: from beginners with knowledge of the alphabet and a very limited productive vocabulary to high advanced students needing a sophisticated command of the language in very demanding professional and academic environments. This one-semester program actually comprises two quarters (20 weeks) of instruction, allowing for significant progress in a very short time.

Students take four-five classes, scheduled Monday-Friday, typically between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm. All skills are addressed (reading/vocabulary, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar). Content electives are introduced at the intermediate levels. Almost daily out-of-class recreational and social activities are scheduled and run by UC Davis student employees. Students are encouraged to participate to improve their English in informal and supportive environments. Students will also have several opportunities for volunteering in the Davis community (more details below). The IEP

UC Davis Extension CS-L one-semester program 2018 is large, with about 250-300 students participating each quarter. No one nationality dominates: the largest numbers come from Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, and Korea with an average of about 30 countries represented at any time.

Global Study Summer Sessions Option (*This option is not part of the standard Fee-based One-Semester Program but a special clause of the program.)

Individual Waseda students may, in extraordinary circumstances, have the option to transfer to Global Study Program and enroll in select classes on the UC Davis campus during Summer Sessions 1 and 2.

(1) Students in their second quarter of IEP study (Summer quarter with a Spring quarter intake) meeting strict requirements of achieving a 550 PBT or 80 iBT, grades of B or better at the IEP and a 3.0 GPA(equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale) from the home institution will have the option to transfer to the Global Study Program (GSP) for Summer Sessions 1 and 2, an opportunity to take full time, designated campus courses, subject to space and prerequisites eligibility requirements. See (Important Notice) below. (2) Those students interested in (1) should bring a current university transcript with them so that they are prepared to show this proof promptly upon achieving the required proficiency score.

Global Study Program Summer Sessions (GSP) a) There will be a secondary admission process for GSP in order to enroll in UC Davis summer courses for academic credit based on the following criteria: a. Academic Achievement. Students will need to earn a minimum “B” grade point average in their home university coursework (equivalent to a 3.0/4.0 grade point scale). An academic transcript from the home university must be provided to the GSP staff for the admissions process. b. English Proficiency Requirement. Students will need to achieve strong English proficiency levels based on these criteria: . B grades in 700-level and/or 800-level IEPP coursework . Meet the campus minimum English test scores, i.e., 550 PBT/80 iBT/7 IELTS.

UC Davis Extension CS-L one-semester program 2018 c. Final Approval to Enroll in Global Study Program Summer Sessions. The Associate Director of the Global Study Program has final approval in admission decisions for all IEPP students who transition to GSP during the summer.

b) Summer Student Management. The Global Study Program will assume full responsibility for managing any Waseda students who transfer into GSP, including their course registration processes.

c) Application and Transfer Process Outline:

Summer Session 1 Application Deadline: Early May Students must receive a 550 minimum score on the midterm TOEFL and must have a GPAof 3.0 or higher on their midterm grade report from the Intensive English Program.* Summer Session 2 Application Deadline: Late June Students must receive a 550 minimum score on the final TOEFL and must have a GPAof 3.0 or higher on their final grade report.

*Exceptions may be made for students applying to Summer Session 1 after the deadline; however, these students may be liable for late registration fees.

Detailed application deadlines and information for Global Study Program Summer Sessions will be provided to students at the beginning of the spring term.

d) Limited Course Summer Enrollments. Eligible students will be allowed to enroll in designated campus courses which may include options in Linguistics, American Studies, and/or Drama. The Associate Director of the Global Study Program will need to provide approval for the courses that students will enroll in during Summer Sessions. Courses are subject to space availability. The Global Study Program Summer Sessions courses in this series are offered on a Pass/No Pass basis. Students will not receive letter grades for the UC Davis Summer Sessions courses.

Classrooms

The IEPP now has two classroom centers: our new UC Davis International Complex, and the Cowell Center, both located close to the center of campus, next to the Student Memorial Union. Students, depending on their classes and level, may have classes in either or both facilities. All classrooms are “smart rooms”, and students and teachers use technology in teaching and learning.

UC Davis Extension CS-L one-semester program 2018 Academic Study

The IEP offers international students a minimum of twenty-two hours of instruction per week for ten weeks in the spring and summer quarters. Fifty-minute core classes include Reading and Vocabulary, Grammar, Composition, and Listening and Speaking. Students with a higher level of English proficiency (intermediate and advanced levels) may choose from a variety of elective classes instead of the Listening and Speaking class. Examples of electives include TOEFL Preparation, Pronunciation, Everyday Expressions and Idioms, Communication Skills, U.S. Society and Culture, Business Writing, and Film Studies. The students will also be assigned to the Multimedia Resource Center (MRC) for guided individualized language study for a minimum of two hours a week.

Students will be able to take the paper-based TOEFL at the end of each quarter at no additional cost. The students can also take the test in the middle of the quarter at their own expense. Students will need to sign up in the office for the final TOEFL test in the middle of the quarter.

TOEIC is also available for the students to take at the end of each quarter at their own expense.

Students will have the option of participating in weekly afternoon activities, which may include movies and popcorn, arts and crafts, sports activities, and ice cream socials. These activities are supervised by Recreation Program Leaders (RPLs), who are UC Davis students. In addition, the Waseda students may go on optional field trips to learn more about California history and culture. Students are encouraged to participate in these activities to have more practice speaking English in informal settings.

Class Materials: Students will need to purchase texts for the ten-week IEPs (approximately $125- $150 each quarter). The students may also want to purchase additional reference books from the campus and local bookstores for personal use.

Housing and Meal Plan Waseda students make their own housing arrangement. Housing option is homestay for this program. There may be a case that Waseda students live with Japanese students in the same room and/or unit.

Opportunities for Learning Through Experience

The IEPP offers several ways for the students in the IEP (10 week program) to learn experientially.

UC Davis Extension CS-L one-semester program 2018 Students with at least an intermediate English proficiency level may have the opportunity to volunteer on an individual basis within the community. Their volunteering strengthens the community as well as provides students an excellent opportunity to advance their English language skills by interacting with and serving people in the community. Ongoing volunteering is a valuable kind of work experience to add to résumés and strengthen applications for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs.

Types of volunteering include: Tutoring and mentoring children Helping the elderly Preparing and serving meals to the hungry Building houses for the homeless Assisting nonprofit organizations Providing administrative support to businesses Planting trees to improve the environment

During spring quarter, as an option, intermediate and advanced students may choose an elective course that facilitates their involvement and volunteering with other UC Davis students to help with several major UC Davis campus volunteering events including the Whole Earth Festival, Celebrate Davis and Open Campus Picnic Day. Students reflect on their experiences through journal-writing and video production. Another opportunity for experiential learning that many Japanese students have is to volunteer to be conversation partners with Davis students who are studying Japanese. Students often develop close friendships through this wonderful experience.

Facilitation Plan

The spring quarter begins with a mandatory two days of testing and orientation. We encourage the students to arrive one-two days before to adjust to the time changes. Students are placed into classes based on the results of our assessment process, which includes a listening/reading/grammar multiple choice test, a writing sample and an oral interview. Students also have a program orientation and learn about Davis and the campus, as well as bicycle safety and some initial cultural information.

Waseda students will meet regularly with their advisor, and those students qualified to join UC Davis Summer Sessions will meet with the appropriate staff members. The IEPP staff is available to help the students with a variety of housing, immigration, academic, and personal needs. Students will receive identification cards from IEPP and may request bus passes and library cards at the Student Services Office.

UC Davis Extension CS-L one-semester program 2018 Health Insurance: Students participating in the International English and Professional Programs (IEPP) must have health insurance. Students who have health insurance that is valid in the United States must show proof of insurance coverage in English at registration (a minimum of $500,000 U.S. dollars in coverage). Otherwise, students must purchase health insurance at registration at a rate of $40 per week.* *Price subject to change.

Local Transportation: Students will be provided local bus passes for spring and summer quarters (not during the vacation break). The passes are given out upon request in the Student Services Office. Bicycles may also be rented (and paid for) by the students at the Bike Barn on the UC Davis campus or through other rental agencies. The price for bike rentals for the twenty- week program is approximately $125 - $135. Locks are provided with the bike. The students are responsible for replacement of lost or stolen equipment; bike and lock replacement costs are a minimum of $200 at the UC Davis Bike Barn. Students will be oriented to the use of bicycles in Davis and on campus, including bike laws, and will be encouraged to wear helmets.

Credits Many universities abroad provide credits for their students studying in the different English language programs that the IEPP offers. We will provide course descriptions and sample syllabi with learner outcomes for Waseda University if this will help the determination of academic credit. Our 10 week Intensive English program has 200 class hours and 20 hours of supervised self-paced study in our Multi-media Resource Center. Students are tested and placed into one of our eight levels of instruction.

Coordinator: Ms. Shannon Buckley-Shaklee will be the program coordinator and Mr. Nariyuki Fujita will be the student advisor for the Waseda students and will meet with the students weekly and later, bi-weekly, to be sure that the students are adjusting well to their new environment. Mr. Calum MacKechnie is the Academic Director of the IEPP and is the academic coordinator of the IEP. Student services staff and program assistants will also be available to help the students.
