-Co-hosted by the Institute of East Asian Studies at UC Berkeley and the Research Institute of Korean Studies at Korea University 2009 Berkeley-KU Forum on East Asian Cultural Studies The Institute of East Asian Studies at University of California, Berkeley and the Institute of Korean Culture at Korea University hold a biannual series of academic forums on the studies of East Asian cultures. The first planning workshop will take place in Seoul on the campus of Korea University from June 24th-26th in 2009. Approximately thirty scholars in East Asian Studies from Asia, Europe, and the United States will take up issues concerning “East Asian Studies” as they have been practiced in research and taught in institutions of higher learning in the second half of the 20th century and reflect upon their assumptions, achievements, influence, transmission, institutionalization, and limitations. With the advent of the 21st century culture has emerged to become an even more critical arena in the fashioning of value and society in intra-Asian as well as cross-Pacific contexts. New perspectives on culture will promise to shed new light on established views of history, culture, and societies. “Towards a New Paradigm in East Asian Cultural Studies” June 24–26, 2009 Global Conference Room, (B109) Centennial Memorial Hall, Korea University <Participants> Edward Baker, Hanyang University James Millward, Georgetown University Joel Bradshaw, University of Hawaii at Manoa Cuong Nguyen, George Mason University Robert Buswell, University of California, Los Alfonso Ojeda, Complutense University of Madrid Angeles Jörg Plassen, Ruhr-Universität Bochum Patricia Crosby, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Ro Young-chan, Geoge Mason University Pamela Crossley, Dartmouth College Ruth Rogaski, Vanderbilt University Yizhuang Ding, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Naoki Sakai, Cornell University Madeleine Yue Dong, University of Washington Janet Theiss, University of Utah Han Seunghyun, Academia Sinica Jeffrey Wasserstrom, University of California, Irvine Kim Heung-kyu, Korea University Kenneth Wells, University of California, Berkeley Kim Kwangmin, University of Colorado at Boulder Kären Wigen, Stanford University Lewis Lancaster, University of California, Berkeley Marcia Yonemoto, University of Colorado at Lee Seung-joon, National University of Singapore Boulder Lee Sung-si, Waseda University Reinhard Zoellner, University of Bonn John Lie, University of California, Berkeley Lim Jie-Hyun, Hanyang University Contact: Office of Research and Public Relations: 02-3290-1613, [email protected] International center for Korean Studies: 02-3290-2595, [email protected] Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS), Korea University HK Korean Cultural Research Group, Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS), Korea University 2009 Berkeley-KU Forum on East Asian Cultural Studies June 24–26, 2009 Global Conference Room(B109), Centennial Memorial Hall, Korea University Wednesday, June 24, 2009 9:30-10:00 Opening Ceremony Welcome Remarks (Han Sung Joo, Former President of Korea University) Keynote Speech (Robert E.
