Heroine, co-production with Theatr Clwyd by Nessah Muthy (The Host) will be directed by HighTide’s Artistic Director Steven Atkinson with a cast including: Asmara Gabrielle, Maggie McCarthy, Wendy Morgan, Lucy Thackeray and Hannah Traylen. Asmara Gabrielle, who plays Grace, is a newcomer to a lead stage role. Comic drama Kanye The First by Sam Steiner (Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons) is a co-production with Paul Jellis in association with The Marlowe and The North Wall, directed by HighTide Associate Director Andrew Twyman and the cast will include: Imogen Doel, Caroline Faber, Daniel Francis- Swaby and Keziah Joseph. Imogen Doel will lead the cast and has extensive experience in theatre, having previously performed in a number of West End productions, as well as multiple collaborations with Anthony Neilson. Muthy’s devastating exploration of patriotism and nativism in modern Britain follows young ex-soldier Grace as she struggles to reassimilate into society following a medical discharge from the army. Steiner’s first commission, and highly original new play will be the first major stage work around one of the most celebrated artists in popular music history, charting the second coming of global pop icon Kanye West. The play takes a timely look at identity and guilt in contemporary culture. Alongside these productions Theresa Ikoko’s Girls, joint winner of the George Devine Award (2016), the Alfred Fagon Award (2015), is set to return with a new cast including: Heather Agyepong, Yvette Boakye and Yasmin Mwanza. Telling the tale of three young friends who are kidnapped in Nigeria, Ikoko wrote Girls to highlight the stories behind the headlines that quickly become yesterday’s news. Girls is a co-production between HighTide, Talawa Theatre Company and Martha Rose Wilson. The Suffolk festival, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016, is set to continue its winning formula of finding, commissioning and producing the country’s best new playwrights at its home in Aldeburgh in September. This year the company will transfer the productions to East London’s Walthamstow in a brand new temporary theatre space with Waltham Forest Council and in association with The National Theatre. ‘The Mix’ will come to London’s Walthamstow Town Centre for 12 days following the Aldeburgh season, bringing an eclectic arts programme to an area of London which currently has no mid to large scale theatre spaces and where there are consequently relatively low levels of engagement with theatre. The diverse programmes in both locations will include three headline plays and a programme of comedy, cabaret, talks and music. The Festival in Aldeburgh will run 12 – 17 September with a Press Day on 16 September. The Walthamstow Festival will run 26 September – 8 October with Press Nights on 26 & 27 September. Kanye The First was developed through The Marlowe’s Roar programme. Unbound Productions KRAKEN Written by Skot Wilson, Directed by Rebecca Hill PRESS RELEASE: FEBRUARY 2020 VAULT FESTIVAL 2020 Pit - The Vaults, Leake Street Tues 3rd March – Sun 8th March 2020, 19:30 (+ Sunday matinee 16:30) PRESS ARE WELCOME TO ALL SHOWS UNBOUND PRODUCTIONS presents KRAKEN An underwater climate crisis capitalist romance. With a giant squid. Welcome to an ocean full of plastic, giant squid, and opportunity. Simon & Trixie work in a submersible mining station at the bottom of the sea. Their relationship is falling to pieces, but they can deal with that later. They just don’t want to be left behind in the climate crisis. Every day, they dig up rare earth minerals which the planet needs for green batteries, electric cars, and new mobile phones. No one said going green would be easy. It’s business as usual until they meet Archie – a giant squid… Kraken is a classic (and the only) underwater climate crisis capitalist-cephalopod romance. It’s a story about monsters, and what (or who) we’re prepared to throw away. It’s about going green but hurting the world around you. It’s about keeping up with catastrophe. It’s about wanting to love your planet, but not knowing how. First and foremost, this is a play about what happens when a giant squid just might be your best friend. Or life partner. KRAKEN Kraken is an underwater climate crisis capitalist romance. It’s about monsters, relationships on the edge, the impact of climate change, and a giant squid. It uses a controversial issue (deep-sea mining) as a foundation to explore our complex relationships with commodities, the planet, and each other.

  • Hightide Annual Report 2018/19
HighTide Annual Report 2018/19 Executive Summary 18/19 Introduction and Highlights The year April 2018 to March 2019 saw HighTide continue its charitable mission to develop new and emerging playwrights through commissioning and producing their work. HighTide produced seven theatre productions in total, including two touring shows and two festivals. HighTide's core productions were written by three playwrights with compelling individual styles. We commissioned Songlines by Tallulah Brown, set in her and HighTide's hometown of Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Songlines focused on the experiences of teenagers in rural communities. We also commissioned The Trick by Eve Leigh to explore the experiences of pensioners in an ambitious and experimental form. The third play, Mouthpiece by Kieran Hurley, looked at cultural voyeurism through a middle-class playwright appropriating the story of a working-class youth. In addition to these three productions, we served as associate producer on four more productions: Busking It by Danusia Samal, Sparks by Jessica Butcher with music by Anoushka Lucas, The Extinction Event by David Aula and Simon Evans and Thor and Loki by Harry Blake. All four productions premiered at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival ahead of transferring to HighTide Festivals Aldeburgh and Walthamstow, Almost 10,000 tickets were processed to the HighTide Festivals in 2018/19, and the festivals generated £140,665 in gross box office income. 2,032 new bookers in total came to HighTide Festival events in 2018/19. In Aldeburgh, we launched Summer Connect, an enrichment programme for young people running throughout the Summer school term. This culminated in a performance at the Aldeburgh Festival launch.
