2 WELCOME TO HIGHTIDE FESTIVAL ALDEBURGH 2019 ‘THIS SUFFOLK FESTIVAL IS A VITAL SHOWCASE FOR NEW WRITING’ HighTide returns to Aldeburgh this September with a bountiful catch of the best fresh talent in UK theatre today. We’re presenting a bumper line-up of HighTide produced shows. LIT, which started as a reading at Festival 2017, receives its first ever public performance here ahead of transferring to Nottingham Playhouse. RUST comes to Aldeburgh following a highly-anticipated premiere at the in London. And there are several more productions, each personal, passionate and innovative, coming here direct from the Festival. Alongside these new talents, you have the chance to meet artistic titans Andrew Davies, Catherine Johnson, and Deborah Warner discussing their craft and we have play readings from our writers under commission. We’re delighted to welcome BBC Radio 3 and BBC Arts to the Festival for the first time, and they will record the live performance of new HighTide radio plays by alumni Tallulah Brown and Vinay Patel for broadcast later this year. And there’s also a chance to experience a virtual reality recording of Tallulah’s hit play from last year, SONGLINES. After twelve years, this is my final HighTide Festival, and alongside all the new talent I’m thrilled to have back old friends such as Wonderful Beast and Luke Wright. The Festival closes with a Ceilidh so I hope you can join me for one last dance. Thank you for being part of the extraordinary success story of HighTide, now internationally recognised as a powerhouse for discovering and producing new theatre talent. Steven Atkinson, Co-founder and Artistic Director

WELCOME FROM ALDEBURGH TOWN COUNCIL Aldeburgh is delighted to welcome back the HighTide Festival in 2019 - one of the most popular and prestigious events hosted by our town. This will be the fifth year the Festival has come to Aldeburgh, bringing its unique blend of innovative productions, comedy, children’s theatre, readings and live interviews. HighTide has become a very important addition to the world-renowned cultural activities associated with Aldeburgh and beyond. This year’s programme promises to be just as challenging, entertaining and wonderfully different as in previous Festivals. We particularly salute HighTide’s inclusion of work by local theatre makers and their outreach projects with young people in our area. May I, on behalf of Aldeburgh, wish HighTide continued success with the 2019 Festival. Councillor Sara Cox, Mayor of Aldeburgh

6 “WHEN I THINK ABOUT YOU MY CHEST FEELS LIKE IT’S ABOUT TO SUPPORT LOCAL EXPLODE AND THIS ENERGY PULSES THROUGH ME, HEAT, RISING ALL TALENT THE WAY UP THROUGH MY VEINS FROM MY HEART.”

The problem with love is that it’s different for everyone. For Bex, love is a flirt in detention and the promise of a date at a Chinese buffet. She doesn’t even like Chinese. How long can she keep searching for love before she ends up burnt?

LIT explores the turbulent teenage years of a girl looking for love in all the wrong places.

Sophie Ellerby’s writing revives a proud British tradition of placing complex working class people at the heart of her work. Sophie is an actor and a writer, and the spark of LIT came from her experience studying young women and mothers in the prison system. Originally developed through HighTide’s First Commissions programme, we are proud to be co-producing the full production after presenting it as a reading in Festival 2017.

A young woman fights to save her fractured community from a catastrophe only she knows is coming. 3345 CE. From the edges of a drowned land, a lonely preacher seeks to resurrect the gods.

SILVER DARLINGS by TALLULAH BROWN

When Rita finds a fish-girl with a long, green and scaly tail in her bath, she immediately knows who’s to blame. Since her sister got ill, their dad’s been taking his old fishing boat out and trawling the North sea looking for a church bell off the coast of Dunwich. He never meant to catch a mermaid but now he has, and he wants to sell her. As the fish-girl struggles to survive on land, Rita’s sister begins to improve. Is the mermaid a beast or a thing of wonder? Rita can’t decide.

Keeping a mermaid secret isn’t easy and when dead animals start washing up on the beach, rumours flood the town. Rita has to help the fish-girl get back to the sea but at what cost?
