Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. Pearce Carnegie Museum of Natural History 4400 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-4080 ABSTRACT The land snails and slugs (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda and Pulmonata) of two national parks along the Potomac River in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia were surveyed in 2010 and 2011. A total of 64 species was documented accounting for 60 new county or District records. Paralaoma servilis (Shuttleworth) and Zonitoides nitidus (Müller) are recorded for the first time from Virginia and Euconulus polygyratus (Pilsbry) is confirmed from the state. Previously unreported growth forms of Punctum smithi Morrison and Stenotrema barbatum (Clapp) are described. No general list of Maine shells—including land, fresh-water and marine species—-has been published since 1843, when Dr. J. W. Mighels’ list was printed in the Boston Journal of Natural History. Dr. Mighels may be called the “Pioneer” conchologist of Maine. By profession a physician, in his leisure hours he was a most enthusiastic collector and student of all forms of molluscan life. Enthusiasm such as his was “contagious” and he soon had gathered about him a little band of active students and collectors. Of these Capt. Walden of the U. S. Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 41.1: 109–115, Doi: https://doi.org/10.32800/abc.2018.41.0109 Abstract The light–dark cycle of Desmoulin’s whorl snail Vertigo moulinsiana Dupuy, 1849 (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Vertiginidae) and its activity patterns at different temperatures. Vertigo moulinsiana is a minute land snail spe- cies which requires high humidity conditions and is found in wet, temporarily inundated habitats. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under the VU (vulnerable) category and is considered a high conservation priority. It is also mentioned in Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive, which imposes the obligation to monitor the species in member countries. The monitoring of V. moulinsiana is based on counting individuals attached to plants in the field, and thus any results may only be properly evaluated when the behavior of the species is understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the light–dark cycle of both adults and juveniles within the species as well as to compare activity patterns of both age groups in dark conditions in tem- peratures of 6 ºC and 21 ºC. Observations were carried out under laboratory conditions, at a high and constant humidity (humidity was at or nearly 100 %). -

By Edward S. Morse. Twenty-one years ago, Dr. J. W. Mighels, then of Portland, presented to the Boston Society of Natural History a catalogue of the shells of Maine, which was accepted and published by them in the fourth volume of their Journal. Since that time the number of species of terrestrial and fluviatile Mollusca detected in the State has been nearly doubled. To make these additions known, I commenced the preparation of a simple catalogue. Such cata- logues, however brief, are of value in the study of geographical distribution, which is rapidly becoming an element of v^st import- ance in the study of Zoology. At the same time their value is greatly enhanced by observations concerning the relative scarcity or abundance, habits, etc., of each s^iecies. While making these brief notes, I was led to examine the subject still more closely. This paper, the result of that investigation, is offered as a first contribution to a more intimate knowledge of our native species. In the preparation of these pages I have received great assistance from W. G. Until now it was known in Ukraine only by one population in the Crimea that became extinct in 2014. Its conservation status, taking threats into account, is considered to be “Critically Endangered” on the national level in Ukraine. Th e characteristics of the phytocenoses to which it is restricted and the associated molluscan faunas are discussed. Key words: Mollusca, Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, fens, conservation. With these characteristics it most resembles Vertigo teskeyae and Vertigo oralis. It differs from V. teskeyae by possessing a less obese shell with a deeper suture and a columellar wall of the aperture that curves back towards the central shell axis. It differs from V. oralis by its shiny shell luster and common presence of an infraparietal lamella. Ecology Populations are primarily found in graminoid litter and on cattail leaves in swamps, sedge meadows, wet and mesic prairie, low calcareous meadows, river banks, lakeshores, roadside ditches, and wooded wetlands. Distribution Vertigo ovata ranges across all of North America from northern Quebec and the Alaskan interior to California, southern Arizona, the Gulf Coast, and south Florida. It also extends south into the West Indies (Pilsbry, 1948). In Virginia this species has been reported from most of the state. GENERAL INTRODUCTION In July 1987 Mr. Jan Wieringa, Wageningen, collected land and freshwater Mollusca on the Azorean Island of Sao Miguel. This collection comprises about 35 species from 29 localities, both dry and in alcohol. Despite the monograph by Backhuys (1975), the non-marine molluscs from the Azores are still insufficiently known. The Wieringa collection contains a numberof ad- ditions and is the source of critical remarks regarding this work; I intend to publish the data in a series of notes.
