ATKINS Abstracts Soil CaCO. levels were determined for six ecosystems in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, Michigan and in Linn County, Iowa; and correlation between these results and the shell thickness of certain terrestrial snails was made. Species used were Anguispira alternata ( Say), Triodopsis multilineata (Say), and T. albolabris (Say). Two ecosystems had high caco. levels ( 120-144 ppm), three had intermedi ate levels ( 93-99ppm) and one had a low level ( 40 ppm). 'Width/thickness ratios of live and cast shells showed that those in high calcium ecosystems had thicker shells than those in low calcium ecosystems, though there were large de viations in the thickness values. -

Aspects such as morphological stasis and phenotypic plasticity further complicate their taxonomic designation. In this study, we demonstrate that the application of DNA barcoding can alleviate these problems within the Carychiidae (Gastro- poda, Pulmonata). These microsnails are a taxon of the pulmonate lineage and most likely migrated onto land indepen- dently of the Stylommatophora clade. Their taxonomical classification is currently based on conchological and anatomical characters only. Despite much confusion about historic species assignments, the Carychiidae can be unambiguously subdi- vided into two taxa: (i) Zospeum species, which are restricted to karst caves, and (ii) Carychium species, which occur in a broad range of environmental conditions. The implementation of discrete molecular data (COI marker) enabled us to cor- rectly designate 90% of the carychiid microsnails. The remaining cases were probably cryptic Zospeum and Carychium taxa and incipient species, which require further investigation into their species status. They include many widespread European species that are introduced elsewhere (at least half of the 36 currently recorded British species are established in North America, for example). To test the contention that the British and Irish fauna consists of 36 species, and to verify the identity of each, a species delimitation study was conducted based on a geographically wide survey. Comparisons between mitochondrial DNA (COI, 16S), nuclear DNA (ITS-1) and morphology were investigated with reference to interspecific hybridisation. Species delimitation of the fauna produced a primary species hypothesis of 47 putative species. This was refined to a secondary species hypothesis of 44 species by integration with morphological and other data. Thirty six of these correspond to the known fauna (two species in Arion subgenus Carinarion were scarcely distinct and Arion (Mesarion) subfuscus consisted of two near-cryptic species). However, by the same criteria a further eight previously undetected species (22% of the fauna) are established in Britain and/or Ireland. Although overlooked, none are strictly morphologically cryptic, and some appear previously undescribed. Most of the additional species are probably accidentally introduced, and several are already widespread in Britain and Ireland (and thus perhaps elsewhere). -

Discovery of Living Anguispira alternata (Say, 1816) (Discidae: Gastropoda) in Louisiana, USA Russell L. Minton*, Erin L. Basiger, and Casey B. Nolan Department of Biology, University of Louisiana at Monroe, 700 University Avenue, Monroe, LA 71209-0520, USA (Accepted January 29, 2010) Of the 13 recognized species of Anguispira in the US, 2 are listed as occurring in Louisiana (NatureServe 2009). (A) Anguispira alternata (Say, 1819) is a pulmonate land snail found throughout the eastern US, including states bordering the Mississippi River to the west (Hubricht 1985). The other species, A. strongylodes (Pfeiffer, 1854), is found across the southern US, with a range that narrowly overlaps A. alternata at its northern boundary. The shell of A. strongylodes differs from that of A. alternata by lacking streaks along the base and the umbilicus and by having smaller spots along the shell periphery (Pilsbry 1948). Hubricht (1985) listed only fossil A. alternata as occurring in Louisiana and Mississippi, while NatureServe (2009) lists it as extirpated in both states. Pilsbry viewed strongylodes as a weakly differentiated subspecies of A. alternata endemic to east-central Texas, although Hubricht (1960) later elevated strongylodes to species status and established its currently recognized range (Hubricht 1985). During a recent survey of Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge (32.6°N, 92.04°W) in Monroe, LA, we collected (B) a number of living and dead specimens that matched the original description and other published images of A. alternata and not A. strongylodes. These specimens possessed the color patterns described by Pilsbry (1948), most notably prominent spots on the periphery and streaks on the underside that separate A. -

All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones. -

BASTERIA 45: 71-72,1981 alien land snails Cochlicopa lubricella and Helix aspersa as (Gastropoda, Pulmonata) in Zimbabwe/Rhodesia A.C. van Bruggen Dept. of Systematics and Evolutionary Biology of the University, c/o Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden,The Netherlands Two Holarctic species of Cochlicopa Risso, 1826,viz., C. lubricella (Porro, 1838) and C. lubrica (Müller, 1774), have been repeatedly recorded from southern Africa (Van Bruggen, 1967, 1980). A new record shows the first of these species to expand its distri- bution rapidly, although both are fortunately still restricted to the urban centres. Recently one of our correspondents, Mrs. Cécile Granville of Schagen (Transvaal), sub- mitted another sample for identification, this time from Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). The material was obtained in October 1980 in an old, well established garden at 35 Arun- del School Road in Mount Pleasant, a northern residential suburb of Salisbury, by Mrs. Jennifer A. Conway: ‘... she found them in a few minutes all in a clump and wondered if they were mating or just newly hatched.’ (Mrs. C. Granville, in litt. 22.X.1980). The sample, preserved in alcohol in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (Leiden), con- sists of 38 specimens, a proportion of which are juvenile (smallest shell 3.2 mm long with have to and ca. 3½ whorls). Three main approaches to delineation of species boundaries (intuitive, conceptual, and operational) are discussed, with remarks on their practical usage in freshwater malacology. The central topic of the article is how malacologists changed their views on the essence of species category and the impact of these changes on the taxonomic practice. The opinions of some prominent and prolific workers in the field (Bourguignat, Kobelt, Hubendick, Starobogatov) are analysed as well as the debates around the theoretical foundations and practical results of the ‘Nouvelle École’ of the 19th century and the ‘comparatory’ systematics of the 20th century.
