First and foremost was the need to be able to demonstrate that introducing the iPads would have significant educational benefit. To that end, as a school, we have carried out a range of our own research and coupled the findings we have made with research that has been conducted in the wider domain. In the field of iPad research, I have asked Mr Wood to share with us his summary of the research findings, as follows:

As more research into the benefits of iPad’s as an educational tool is published and made available, we are seeing themes similar to those found in the research from our own iPad trials. Common to this research is the emergence of themes such as Billanook College connectedness, engagement and student achievement. Listed below is a summary Phone: 9725 5388 of several key points outlined from several 1:1 iPad research studies conducted in Fax: 9725 8556 the UK, Norway and the US. It provides greater opportunities for students to collaborate, discover, externalise, consolidate and make conclusions about educational material. New ways of learning are engendered by the ‘any time anywhere’ access to information and learning tools.

ENGAGEMENT Collaborating with ones peers, problem solving and ultimately creating something to demonstrate ones capabilities or unique understanding is engaging. Students equipped with iPads show high levels of engagement throughout a range of learning experiences. The device enables them to face a problem and develop higher-order thinking skills from pursuing the solution. The iPad is also ideal for project-based learning and experimenting that resemble real world contexts.

ACHIEVEMENT

Students demonstrate a deeper understanding of the subject matter when they have access to an iPad for researching. It allows students to uncover the latest thinking and best practices in the area that they are studying – all at the tap of the screen. This also gives rise to the notion of secondary knowledge, the phenomenon of uncovering new information and resources; the source for future ideas and thinking. iPads provide a unique ability to have students create content in a mobile environment that otherwise would be extremely challenging or nearly impossible to achieve in a traditional classroom setting without these devices. They also enable students to provide tangible evidence of their learning CONTENTS journey, by having an electronic record that shows just how much they know and Principal’s Piece...... 2 have learnt about a topic. “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.” - Carl Gustav Jung Delighting in the Senior Production, observing rehearsals for the Year 7 & 8 Revue and marvelling at the capacity of Liz D to direct 4 year old ‘chickens’ for Jack and the Beanstalk, I got to thinking about the performing arts. I was one of those enigmatic PA and Sport kids, switching from one focus to the other as the day or the hour demanded. It was probably just Carl Jung says that the creative mind has an inner to keep me busy and out of trouble. Engagement in necessity, a drive to exercise and express our play the arts gave me an appreciation of the performance instinct. I wonder though, as we grow up, how much experience, of learning words and movement, of that is passed over for the more serious business shaping a character and being part of a team that of life, and at what cost? How much space in our day takes the audience out of the everyday and into an do we dedicate to play, to observing, holding, and irresistible story. Navigating my teens partly through relishing the ‘objects’ we love? How much poorer are the lens of performing arts allowed me to play with we as friends, lovers, parents and citizens because identity, to learn who I was by finding myself in a we forgo the creative space for a more measurable character, in a story not my own, however small the ‘productive’ way of filling every moment of the day? part. Prayer or meditation can be creative play space, time for hanging out and basking in the Big Love and letting that blessing infiltrate and inspire our other moments. How much space in the day of our children is allocated to play? I see students whose every waking moment and even some of their sleeping times are filled with activity - before school, after school, during school, at weekends and then the precious spaces in between filled with keeping up appearances on social media because no one wants to miss out on anything. Where’s the time to play, to exercise the creative mind, to find something new and wonderful, to relish our proximity to things, people, spaces and objects that we love? Paul Newman is quoted as saying; “To be an actor you have to be a child.” I’d like to suggest that it’s not only a prerequisite for an actor, but also to be a fully integrated human being, whatever age we are. These holidays might be a great time to rethink how we as parents, students, partners and members of community allow and honor the creative ‘play’ space. Who knows what creativity might burst forth. Look out Mr Cotton! Blessings for a safe holiday filled with creative spaces of playing with those you love. Rev. Jennie Gordon College Chaplain 0416 152 051

BILLANOOK BULLETIN ISSUE 15 | 17 SEPTEMBER 2012 | 9 YEAR 9 GERMAN

YEAR 9 GERMAN CUCKOO RESTAURANT EXCURSION On Sunday 26 August Year 9 German students feasted on German food and culture at the Cuckoo Restaurant in Olinda. The Cuckoo has been in operation for 55 years and is a replica of an authentic German restaurant both the culinary and cultural aspects. The class undertook a unit on food and drink, culminating in their very own Café scene in class. The visit to the Cuckoo provided the class with an extension of their classroom learning. Students tried Bratwurst (German sausages), Rotkohl (red cabbage), Leberkaese (a type of meatloaf), Schokoladenkuchen (chocolate cake), and Apfelstrudel (apple strudel). Everyone was entertained by fantastic yodelling and singing of German songs, for which they then linked arms and “schunkelt” (swayed). The atmosphere was one of fun and frivolity and everyone enjoyed themselves. “The band was funny” Yasmin Junkaris “It was great to experience the German food.” Ryan Warren “It was an interesting experience.” Tonia Sellars Thank you to parents who ferried their children out on a cold night to enjoy this authentic language and cultural event.

BILLANOOK BULLETIN ISSUE 15 | 17 SEPTEMBER 2012 | 10 YEAR 7 ENGLISH

THE OGRE

The ogre sits quietly on the bookshelf, weeping miserably with his head in his hands. His back is hunched horribly, his legs crossed in a position of grief. His muscles are standing out tensely, yet are strangely relaxed. His hairless head is bent in sorrow, as if crying for something that can never be.

He sits there woodenly in front of the books, just freshly removed from his box, where he has sat for countless months, awaiting arrival at his long awaited new home.

Perhaps he is weeping for his old residence where he has wept quietly for many years, on a different bookshelf, with different books. Perhaps he is weeping for something else. He has never told me.

He has surely heard, but never seen, at least four children grow up. He certainly may have heard many more, cried on many other bookshelves in front of many other books, always crying, never seeing.

I wonder what knowledge he carries sadly, what unspeakable thing has he seen or heard, what terrible deed, to make him cry perpetually.

BILLANOOK BULLETIN ISSUE 15 | 17 SEPTEMBER 2012 | 12 Early Learning PROGRAM

Spring has sprung and the Early Learning Program is enjoying lots of outside learning. This little poem makes us get in the mood to enjoy the season.

“A little bird, he told me so He said come on, get on the go Open your eyes the sky is full of butterflies The blossoms on the trees stir up the honey bees Spring makes my fever right!”

ELP4 have been very busy rehearsing for the upcoming performance of Jack and the BeanStalk. Our little “Chickens” have their costumes ready; they know their songs and moves and are ready to take the audience by storm. Please make sure you don’t miss out by purchasing a ticket to come and see the show this Wednesday and Thursday nights!

ELP3 really enjoyed their incursion by Drama Tool Box - the Circus. There were lots of smiles and laughter as the children got to dress up and perform with their friends. Drama Tool Box workshops use movement, music and drama. During the workshop the children used dramatic techniques to create, explore and develop ideas using their bodies. ELP 3 love to dress up and fully immerse themselves in dramatic play, so this was a great session to encourage dramatic play and further develop the children’s ideas.

It has been a fantastic term of growing, learning and laughing. We wish you a very happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all back happy and healthy for a busy and exciting Term 4.

BILLANOOK BULLETIN ISSUE 15 | 17 SEPTEMBER 2012 | 14 Years 3-6

As we draw closer to the Production Mrs Deveson has been working tirelessly with our Primary students to ensure they are ready for opening night. Everyone is honing their drama skills in final rehearsals to ensure that their faces, bodies and voices will all come together to help tell the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Seeing all the hard work that has been put into choreography, music, costumes and the set is making us all extremely excited in anticipation of opening night on Wednesday 19 September. Years 4-6 enjoyed the challenge of the Fun Run Cross Country on Wednesday 29 August. With the benefit of good weather the four different houses competed against personal bests and each other to raise money for INSERT FUNDRAISER. Congratulations to all the students who took part in representing their house and raising money for such a fantastic cause, and thank you to all the staff involved in making it run so smoothly.

Middle Primary have been working towards a stupendous ending to term. In SMARTIES they have been discussing what a fantastic classroom looks, feels and sounds like, and how MP will continue to support positive learning experiences as they move towards Term 4. They have also enjoyed testing their maths skills and muscles, recording the length of their hop, skip and jump outside and using technology to present their findings. In literacy, they are building on their writing expertise by planning a draft and creating a final copy of a persuasive writing piece, ensuring they use powerful adjectives and emotive language to make their point strongly.

With all the excitement from the previous week’s events Senior Primary have been reflecting on their wonderful experiences at Camp, District Athletics and Cross Country. Senior Primary were able to share some of those valuable experiences with us all at Assembly, and their presentation reminded us of what fantastic role models they continue to be for Junior and Middle Primary. After an eye-opening visit to Treasury Place and Parliament during their Study Tour the students are completing interesting biographies on Australian Prime Ministers and learning about how governments resolve issues.

It’s with great joy we all welcome back Mrs Corless. It’s just not the same without seeing her smiling face each day. Don’t worry Mrs Corless, we will hopefully be sending some preps with glitter to decorate your new footwear soon. Years 3-6 Team

BILLANOOK BULLETIN ISSUE 15 | 17 SEPTEMBER 2012 | 15 FRIENDS OF ROUND SQUARE

The Introduction of Michael and Kerryn as Co-coordinators

What an introduction it was!

Friends of Round Square (FoRS) have an annual dinner where teachers, principals (current and past) and representatives from Round Square schools within the region attend.

This year, with the newly elected co-coordinators for Round Square Alumni Australia (RSAA), Kerryn Boyle and Michael Golden, it was a perfect opportunity to start networking!

The invitation extended to Round Square Alumni within the region, with a great turn out.

With over thirty passionate people all in one room Kerryn and Michael introduced themselves, their Round Square journey and stories, spoke about their goals for RSAA and explained how people within the Round Square community can help this network to grow.

Ideas and contacts were shared and a solid base has been set. Now with the support of Billanook College, Ivanhoe Grammar, Ballarat Grammar and Woodleigh School, Michael and Kerryn aims to expand further to the contacts within schools in other states of Australia.

Everyone enjoyed good food and good wine and many new friendships were formed.
