  • Register in Eastern Cham: Phonological, Phonetic and Sociolinguistic Approaches
REGISTER IN EASTERN CHAM: PHONOLOGICAL, PHONETIC AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC APPROACHES A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Marc Brunelle August 2005 © 2005 Marc Brunelle REGISTER IN EASTERN CHAM: PHONOLOGICAL, PHONETIC AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC APPROACHES Marc Brunelle, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2005 The Chamic language family is often cited as a test case for contact linguistics. Although Chamic languages are Austronesian, they are claimed to have converged with Mon-Khmer languages and adopted features from their closest neighbors. A good example of such a convergence is the realization of phonological register in Cham dialects. In many Southeast Asian languages, the loss of the voicing contrast in onsets has led to the development of two registers, bundles of features that initially included pitch, voice quality, vowel quality and durational differences and that are typically realized on rimes. While Cambodian Cham realizes register mainly through vowel quality, just like Khmer, the registers of the Cham dialect spoken in south- central Vietnam (Eastern Cham) are claimed to have evolved into tone, a property that plays a central role in Vietnamese phonology. This dissertation evaluates the hypothesis that contact with Vietnamese is responsible for the recent evolution of Eastern Cham register by exploring the nature of the sound system of Eastern Cham from phonetic, phonological and sociolinguistic perspectives. Proponents of the view that Eastern Cham has a complex tone system claim that tones arose from the phonemicization of register allophones conditioned by codas after the weakening or deletion of coda stops and laryngeals.

  • Vietnam-Champa Relations and the Malay-Islam Regional Network in the 17Th–19Th Centuries
Vietnam-Champa Relations and the Malay-Islam Regional Network in the 17th–19th Centuries Danny Wong Tze Ken Historical relations between Vietnam and the kingdom of Champa was a very long- standing affair characterized by the gradual rise of the Vietnamese and the decline of the Chams. The relationship began as early as the second century CE, when the Chams started a kingdom called Lin-yi, covering the area between the land of the Viet people in the north and Nanchao in the south. The historical consciousness of both peoples includes wars and conflicts between the two over a period of fifteen centuries before the kingdom of Champa was incorporated under Vietnamese rule in 1693. Thereafter, the lands of the Chams were settled by Vietnamese through a series of land settlement programs introduced by the Vietnamese ruling houses. Subjugation of the former land of Champa was incomplete, however, as Cham resistance – often armed – became the central theme of the relationship after 1693. Resistance was based on the desire to be free of Vietnamese rule and to reinstate the kingdom of Champa. Contributing to this desire was the friction that existed between Vietnamese and Chams, often at the expense of Cham rights and well being. It was not until 1835 that Cham resistance was finally broken. This essay traces the history of Vietnam-Champa relations between 1693 and 1835, with emphasis on the Vietnamization process and the existence of a Malay-Islam regional network in Southeast Asia, based mainly in the Malay Peninsula, that contributed to Cham resistance. The last part of the essay discusses the correlation between historical and present-day Cham-Malay relations.

Nevertheless there are some of Arab, Indian, Pakistanis and Afghan origins. After Cambodia independence they are officially known as Khmer Islam (Muslim Khmer). Since their arrivals, the Chams and the Malays were well accepted by the Khmer communities at all levels. The Khmer Islam can freely choose any village to reside, any job to do for their living or they may work as a government officer or civil servants or else they may join the armed forces. Among them there are some who had been appointed to the highest position in the royal government’s administration hierachy such as governors and ministers. Islam as their religion can freely be practiced together with their traditional Islamic education system for their children. To date this freedom can still be widely seen. This paper discusses the long and winding history of the Cambodian Muslim education; how they keep up with changes and development brought about in the country where the majority of its population is Buddhist. This paper tries to trace the history of how Islam is taught to the members of the community. How the dynamism of Imam Musa’s ideals and visions together with the Muslim brothers from the Malay archipelago have established a strong system which in their view has helped to maintain the balance in their daily life to be a good citizen and to preserve their own identity as Muslim.

  • Research on Champa and Its Evolution
Research on Champa and its Evolution It was in 1852 that a researcher, J. Crawford, for the first time turned his attention to the Chams in a scientific manner and published a list of 81 Cham words. Only 16 years later new interests in these people were expressed and this time again from a linguist, A. Bastian, who published in 1868 a two-page list of Cham vocabulary gathered by himself and in 1870 a paper on the language and the origin of the Chams. Five years later, another linguist, A. Morice, produced in Revue de Linguistique et de Philologie (VII, 1875), the first Cham glossary, of about 800 words, in an important work on the Cham and Stieng languages. Finally, in 1877, K. F. Holle published the Cham alphabet which was completed by a commentary in 1882. It was only from 1880 onwards that publications on ancient Champa and its people began to abound. It was, in fact, around that date that we saw the publication of findings of the first research led by a Frenchman who had lived in the country a few years before. In 1880, A. Labussière gave the first information on the socio-religious aspect of the Muslim Chams in South- western Vietnam; E. Aymonier published in 1881 an article on Cham writing and dialects, followed by six studies of epigra- phy, a Grammaire de la Langue Chame (1889), a long article on religion and many other publications; Neis and Septfons pub- lished a new vocabulary; L. P. Lesserteur two notes on epigra- Champa 1 phy, J.
