Das Thema „Bayern – Italien“ passt genau zur Geschichte unserer Stadt. Erste Belege der Stadt- entwicklung reichen zweitausend Jahre zurück in die Römerzeit mit dem Bau der Via Claudia Augusta und einer Rast- und Militärstation in Füssen. Als besondere kulturelle Leistung gilt der Kulturtransfer der Füssener Lautenmacher vom 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert nach Italien. Während Füssener Kaufleute in Oberitalien lukrative Geschäfts- beziehungen pflegten, ließen sich heimische Künstler von der großartigen Kunst in Italien inspirieren. Dass Füssen zusammen mit Augsburg diese Landesausstellung ausrichtet, dokumentiert auch eine historische Herrschaftsachse: So unterstand Füssen seit dem frühen 14. Jahrhundert der Lan- deshoheit des Fürstbischofs von Augsburg. Das Hohe Schloss war die beliebte Sommerresidenz dieses Landesherrn und begehrter Aufenthaltsort von Kaiser Maximilian I. Heute ist Füssen ein attraktiver Urlaubsort im Süden Deutsch- lands an den Alpen. Die Landesausstellung will den Gästen der Stadt nicht nur die geschichtlichen und kulturellen Bezüge zwischen Bayern und Italien lebendig vermitteln, sondern diese in einem bunten, vielfältigen Begleitprogramm erlebbar machen.
