This diversity demonstrates the rich heritage of these former trading routes. The boat emerges at Baan Silapin, a 100-year-old house that has been renovated and transformed into an art gallery. The gallery serves as a central gathering point for the community’s artisans. Spend time browsing the works of art on display and learn about Thailand’s modern arts scene. There may be time to take a short walk around the community and see the traditional houses that line the canal. At Baan Silipin, there is also a chance to see intricately-designed Thai puppets. Learn about this ancient art form and, if lucky, the puppeteers may put on a live performance. Return to the boat late in the afternoon and cruise back toward town. Make a stop at Wat Arun, the ‘Temple of Dawn’, for the day’s final visit then travel onwards to the hotel. This traditional Bangkok tour begins with a walk through Chinatown. Visit tea shops, temples, and shop houses that have retained their old-world charm. Rub elbows with the locals at vibrant markets while browsing stalls overflowing with fresh produce and dry goods. Pay a visit to the Bangkok Folk Museum. Located in a seventy-year-old house, the museum has a small but fascinating collection of historic items and displays. Learn about Thailand’s rich culture and discover how it has evolved over time. Meet with a chef from Blue Elephant Cooking School, one of the country’s most reputable traditional Thai cooking institutes. Visit the Blue Elephant cooking school for an insightful theory class. The chef will distribute a recipe book then demonstrate the preparation methods, giving detailed commentary about the process. Then it’s time for the hands-on experience. At an individual cooking station, use the recipes and the techniques demonstrated by the chef to prepare a selection of dishes. The chef and other local assistants will be available to help or offer advice. After the meal is prepared, sit down and enjoy the delicate flavours of authentic, home-cooked Thai cuisine. Located along a canal in the city centre, this beautiful teak mansion was the former residence of Jim Thompson, the charismatic American silk merchant. Wander around the leafy compound, exploring the traditional teak buildings to learn more about the man himself, his involvement in the silk trade and his mysterious disappearance. Admire the priceless antiques on display while gaining insight into Thai heritage and tradition. After the tour of Thompson’s home, cross the canal to Baan Krua Thai Silk Weaving Community. This Cham Muslim community is home to remarkable local artisans, many of whom used to weave for Jim Thompson. Today, two original weaving families still remain.
