Follow us on @StamfordGreen A M B I T I O N A is for Attendance

The school’s leadership team has recently reviewed its Attendance Policy, as we have noticed that attendance at Stamford Green School and Nursery is declining.

The reason for highlighting this issue and trying to improve the situation is twofold:

1. In order to teach and improve your child’s outcomes, they actually need to be in school, and arrive on time.

2. The higher the absence rate, the greater the gulf becomes between children who are frequently absent and those who attend regularly.

You can read our new Attendance Policy here http://www.stamford-green.surrey.sch.uk/fileadmin/ user_upload/policies/attendance_policy_-_8.3.18.pdf. You will also find it on our school website under the policies section.

Two sections of the policy we wish to bring your attention are:

1. Section 5 - Responding to Non - Attendance

A M B I T I O N

2. Section 6 - Improving Attendance

Hopefully you will have noticed in section 6b)iv, we will now be celebrating children’s attendance each half term. Children who have attended school for 97% or more of the half term will be given an attendance reward sticker. In addition to this, targeted children who have met or exceeded their AIM target (set at an Attendance Improvement Meeting), will also qualify for the attendance reward sticker.

The reason for the change is to celebrate excellent attendance which is 97% or more, whilst acknowledging that some children might catch a sickness bug etc. and may need to rest at home until they feel better.

At Parents’ Forum on Monday 26 April 2018 at 9.00am, Mrs Druce will be talking more about why securing excellent attendance is important and every parent is welcome to come along.

T O G E T H E R N E S S Marsden Marching Super Team Effort

The Marsden March is a walk that raises money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. You can either do the 5 mile one or the 14 mile one. I walked 5 miles with Poppy Moore, Heidi and Pippa Rush and Rosie Walker. It took a long time to get to the end but we had a rest in . We had chocolate on the way that kept us going. We saw Aimee Bloomfield, Lucy Stevens, Miss Burgess, Louisa Beunderman and Mrs Kellett, all walking. Mrs Beunderman did 5 miles, that’s amazing! I walked all the way with my Mum because she is the reason I did it. Me, my Mum and Poppy cut the 5 mile starting ribbon. Zoe Lorenz cut the ribbon for the 14 mile walk and she walked 14 miles with my sister Becca, my Dad, and other friends and family - that’s a long way! We all felt very proud so we brought our medals in to school the next day to show everyone. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us, so far we have raised £12,710! If you would like to you can still sponsor us here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thecheeringsquad. Izzy Jones - 3S

On March 4 2018, I completed the Marsden March for the charity and hospital - the Royal Marsden. We were given an 8:30am start time, which was good to get it done, but bad because we were tired! It took us 5 hours and a bit to complete the whole 14 miles. Our team was made from: me, my Mum, my Dad, my Nan, Mrs Kellet ( HLTA), Cousins - Holly and Becca - and their Mum, Caroline. My Mum managed 5 miles; I did 14! When we finished we were greeted with warm applause, medals and a nice goody bag! I feel very proud of myself as we raised over £2,000! Sheltering Over the last few weeks we have been updating our School Emergency Plan which deals with a range of potential scenarios. One important part of the plan is our Sheltering Procedure (formerly known as lockdown). In the new procedure we have three levels of sheltering which gives us a range of pre-planned options to deal with different scenarios. On Friday 2 March we carried out a level 1 sheltering drill and we will be practicing the other levels during the year. Level 1 could be triggered by an event which only affects the outdoor space such as a loose dog or an angry deer in the playground (something that has triggered the alarms in the past!) The full procedure is quite detailed but in summary:

Level 1 Everyone to remain inside the building or return there. Free movement around the building may be allowed once everyone is accounted for.

Level 2 Everyone to remain inside the building or return there. All external doors and windows locked with windows covered and lights and electronic equipment switched off. Level 3 As level 2 but children outside past the lower playground will be taken by staff away from the premises via the West Gate and go to .

For the purposes of our emergency plan, our partner school is Kingswood House and they have kindly agreed to allow us to use their resources as necessary during an emergency. In the event or a real emergency, we would be able to use their facilities to send out information to parents and carers. Mrs Joanna Lee School Business Leader

Why not have a look and make your life easier with this feature…...

I N S P I R I N G YR ZooLab Visit Reception loved their visit from Zoolab. They learnt so many new things about the creatures and it was amazing for the children to see them all up close and have the opportunity to feel and handle them. The teachers were impressed by the concentration shown; the thoughtful questions that were asked and, for some children, the courage that it took to come close and touch the animals.

YN Astrodome Adventure Last Thursday the Nursery were treated to an amazing visit in the Space Dome. The children saw shooting stars and the galaxy of stars above our heads. We took off in our rocket and saw the Earth below us. This was a fantastic way to round off our theme “To Infinity and Beyond!”

Stamford Green STEM Week

Y1 Have Been Getting Eggy ….

Year 1 enjoyed collecting sticks, logs, leaves and twigs to make a bug hotel in our Year 1 outside area. We also designed and made parachutes in order to protect an egg when dropped from a height! This was very exciting some of them worked but we particularly enjoyed it when the eggs smashed!!

We had a great time during STEM week! We carried out different activities but our favourite one was making a parachute big enough to hold an egg! In groups we predicted the most durable material to use and sharing our reasons why, made the parachute and finally went outside with 1A to test them! Most of our eggs cracked but two teams didn’t! I N S P I R I N G

Year 1 For STEM week we had lots of fun activities to do in Year 1. On Friday we made parachutes for real eggs. We used lots of different materials to help protect the egg when we dropped it. Florence -1A We dropped the eggs from a tall height. Some of the eggs didn't break and some of them did! Caitlin -1A

We enjoyed making a minibeast investigation area and found lots of sticks and leaves on the field to make our bug hotel. We took part in an Egg Drop Challenge. We had to make a parachute for the egg to protect it. 10 of our eggs survived! Pippa R - 1R.

Year 2

Before last week, Year 2 had no idea what STEM week would involve! The children had 'the best week ever' (their words!) whilst they took part in a variety of tasks around the theme of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. A particular highlight for the children was when they got to design a thrilling zip wire experience for a lego character - the Year 2 classrooms looked like something out of a Mission Impossible movie! A highlight for the staff was seeing the children's resilience in action during our ecology day. They trudged through the mud to find and classify different types of leaves in our school grounds as well as pretended to be seeds, rushing around the astro finding all the things they needed to grow. Only a small number of seeds got to grow into beautiful flowers. The rest sadly didn't germinate and some of these even ended up being eaten by birds and becoming bird poo!

Learning about the different plants that live on the top field was very exciting, especially when it was a challenge to see how many different kinds of leaves we could possibly find! Once we found our leaves we stuck them onto our 'sticky strips'. Some children even stuck themselves onto their sticky strips! We found evidence of oak, rowan, holly and horse chestnut trees on our field. We are excited to see the new leaves growing on the trees in the coming weeks!

Year 3 In STEM week we did a Skittles experiment. I really enjoyed doing it because it was fun to see the patterns that were made when we added water to the Skittles. Some of the patterns didn't come out as we expected! Ella P- 3L

It was very fun making structures and seeing how much weight they could hold. Everyone's structure was nice to see and it was exciting when we tested how much they could hold. It took a long time to make but my one held a lot. Jono P - 3L

We liked the experiments during STEM week. We really enjoyed the one where we used skittles to copy a pattern Mrs Smith had created and had to predict what it would look like when the colours had been introduced into water and began to run. It was fun (and we got to eat the left over skittles!) The weight testing was another great experiment. We had to create a structure from cocktail sticks and jelly tots. We had to see who's structure held the most weight without breaking! Heidi R and Connie D - 3S

I N S P I R I N G

Year 4 STEM week in 4S was very exciting. Maggie writes. ‘I enjoyed the science investigation into which materials would make the best astro-nappy! I liked that we learnt how to use pipettes accurately. We found out that plastic would be a better choice than tinfoil, as it is waterproof and doesn’t rip easily. We would also put a layer of absorbent cotton wool next to the skin.’ Christopher said, “I really enjoyed the DT bridge building challenge. I liked that we got to use our imagination to design and build a bridge from newspaper which spanned 30cm. The bridge that our group made held 14kg! We made sure our bridge had structural integrity by adding masking tape to hold the newspaper in place and strengthen it.”

During STEM week 4J were lucky enough to touch the heart of a sheep! A scientist came in from and talked to us about circulation and the heart. She then dissected the heart while we all watched. We all saw the heart strings and the holes which the blood pumped in and out of. We found it amazing that this all happens in our bodies! Finally, we got to touch the heart, using gloves. It felt slimy, cold and a bit squidgy. Whilst people were touching the heart, we listened to each other's hearts using stethoscopes. This was the best part of STEM week. Another activity during STEM week was listening to a horrible history assembly about powerful women for international women's day. We learnt about people such as Marie Curie who helped invent X rays. By Imogen A and Kane D-W

Year 5

IN STEM week in Year 5 we looked at codes and ciphers. We looked at simple ciphers and then studied how they can be made more complex. We also looked at frequency tables and how knowing how often a letter tends to get used in text allows you to backwards engineer solutions.

We also looked at Morse Code and QR codes and tried sending simple pictures using binary. Finally we looked at steganography and explored how messages can be hidden in images.

Can you spot the message in the left eye of the baby Gorilla?

I N S P I R I N G

Year 5

In 5B we explored Sports Science and the effects of exercise on the heart. We started by taking our own pulses. We found that the lowest resting heart rates were from children who had qualified for the Cross-country tournament and regularly did lots of exercise.

We then tried to see whether we could lower our heart rates after a session of mindfulness. We discovered that most of us did register lower heart rates after a short session of mindfulness. We then looked at striking brain scans of people who regularly practise mindfulness and spoke about the benefits of relaxation and mindfulness. This was evident in the brain scans we looked at.

After that we went onto the playground and did vigorous exercise. We discovered that this made our heart rate increase significantly. We also spoke about the concept of maximum heart rate and worked out our own maximum potential heartrates.

We also looked at the concept of active heart rate - this is the target sustainable heart rate reached by meaningful exercise. We tried to relate this to the exercise that generated this heartrate.

Lastly we spoke about the concept of recovery time. We discussed the fact that people who are fit find that their hearts quickly return to their resting heart rate after exercise but that the hearts of unfit people take longer to return to normal.

Year 6

In Year 6 we have been trying to make bridges out of newspaper and tape. We got into groups and were competing to make the strongest bridge. We put weights on to the structures to see if they could pass. Some did manage to hold all the weights.

In science we have been using torches to measure the lengths of shadows in preparation for the puppet show we’ll perform to the Reception classes in a couple of week’s time.

Times Tables Rockstars

Year 3 and 4 are about to become rock stars! Times tables rock stars! Year 3 and Year 4 will soon be using the Times Tables Rock Stars website (https://ttrockstars.com/) to help them with their times tables. The children's logins will work for them at school and at home, so watch out for a sticker in their learning journals with their username and password in the next few weeks. The website allows the children to practise a selection of times tables across a range of game styles. Some of the game options use times tables set by the teacher whilst others allow the children to practise everything up to 12x12. The aim is to improve the speed of recall of times tables to reach 'Rock Hero' sta- tus. The website provides feedback on how the children are doing so they can see which times tables need more practise. For example, the picture below shows that this user is slower answering 12x7, 12x8 and 12x9 than most other questions. I wonder who our first Rock Hero could be? V A L U E S

Our Value for March is:

Forgiveness

Definition: ‘the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven.’

At Stamford Green we teach the children that forgiveness is often a hard thing to show, especially when we have been hurt by others, but it is essential to do for them to move past particular issues and help friendships blossom.

Recently, Year 3 went to visit the Sikh Gurdwara in Southfields. Members of the community told the children about how they try to show many values through their religion but caring and forgiveness were priorities.

To forgive someone takes more care and courage than some realise and it helps make others, as well as ourselves, better human beings.

Craze of the week

This week it’s been scooter board and next week will be hoops!
