The President Rob Lynch extended a warm welcome to all present, members and friends, Guest Speaker Ian McRae and his son Rob, and former RAAF pilot Alan Shaloo from .

Apologies: from Stephen Schneider and Kevin O'Reilly were received on the motion of Nathan Wheeler and Len Creek. Carried.

Minutes of previous AGM 17th November 2011 were read by the Secretary Joan Bennett. Ian Wheeler moved 'that the Minutes as read be confirmed', seconded by Kay Scott and carried.

President's Report July 1st 2011 -June 3oth 2012 was presented by Rob Lynch.

John Millington moved 'that the President's Report be received', and in so doing said that the Report reflected the large amount of work done by the Board, and the professionalism shown reflected on the President's leadership, and extended congratulations to him. John Deckert seconded the motion, remarking that he feels privileged to work under Rob's leadership. This was carried with acclamation.

Financial Report: The Treasurer Trevor Borgelt presented the Report, showing a loss of $741.81. Trevor said that the NAHC operated on a shoestring and the report particularly shows prudent expenditure on the Avro Anson restoration by Mick Kingwill, who has achieved much on a very careful budget. Motion -'that the Treasurer's Report be received', moved by Trevor Borgelt and seconded by Janet Rowe and carried.

As earlier reported by the President, Janet Rowe had given valuable assistance to Len Creek in his role as Treasurer immediately following Lesley Stephen's resignation last year. Rob then presented Janet with a small gift and expressed our appreciation for her work.

Appointment of Auditor: Trevor Borgelt moved, Nathan Wheeler seconded 'that Peter Clohesy be appointed Auditor for 2012-13', carried.

Rule Change: Amendments were presented as recommended by the NAHC Board of Management. These amendments to our Rules/Constitution are required by the Australian Taxation Office for the NAHC application for Taxable Deduction Gift Recipient (DGR) status.

Joan Bennett provided the background, following which Trevor Borgelt moved (a) 'that as recommended by the Board under Section 19 Board of Management point 3, a new clause (c) be added a majority of people, who have a degree of responsibility to the community as a whole due to their occupation or role in the community, and (b) 'that a new clause be inserted at Section 3 Alteration of Rules point 2 the Australian Taxation Office is to be notified of any changes to the Rules and Statement of Purpose of the Association'. The motion was seconded by Allen Scott and carried unanimously.

Election of six members of the Board of Management: President Rob Lynch invited Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Gersch to take the Chair for this Agenda item. Mayor Gersch thanked Rob for the invitation and congratulated the NAHC on their success. He said that the Nhill Aerodrome is very important to residents not only in Nhill but in the Hindmarsh Shire. The Mayor drew attention to the success of the Fly In on 20th October 2012-that it made Nhill look different as it brought many visitors to the Shire, and these visitors had made a financial contribution to our economy.

Mayor Gersch commended the group for the time and patience that it took to accomplish their aims. He said that the Council was very supportive of the project, mentioning the early assistance given by Andrew Bainbridge (Engineer) and currently Doug Gowans Director of Infrastructure, and Janine Grover Co-ordinator of Community Development and also the previous Mayor, Cr Cliff Linger. The Mayor added that although the NAHC Board is a small group, they show no fear of the big task ahead. He feels that the task we've embarked upon is a live project, that it will be ongoing and probably never finished.

The Mayor then proceeded to read six nominations for the Board of Management. Nominations were received from Max Garland, Len Creek, Rob Lynch, Nathan Wheeler, Brian Creek and Mick Kingwill. As the nominations were no greater than the numbers required, Mayor Gersch endorsed them as members of the Board of Management. He returned the Chair to Rob Lynch.

Guest Speaker: Ian McRae was introduced by the President who informed the meeting that Ian McRae had actually piloted an Avro Anson which landed at Nhill Aerodrome while serving in the RAAF during the Second World War. Ian is ninety (90) years old, and has resided in Dimboola since his retirement from farming at Wallup. He went on to talk about his schooling background, his great desire to be a pilot, and his wartime experiences firstly as a ground crew mechanic and later as a pilot. Ian served at Pt. Cook, Tocumwal, and Mt Gambier RAAF Bases. He notably brought an Avro Anson aircraft safely back to Nhill from near Warracknabeal with one engine only, landing without mishap to the crew, but some damage to the aircraft which was repaired overnight. He spent 400 hours in the Avro Ansons, mainly training navigators and crew.

He remembers his four years in the RAAF as a wonderful experience, and after the War returned to the family farm at Wallup, enabling his brother to leave the farm for career training. In conclusion Ian then congratulated the NAHC on their work.

Board member Merv Schneider, a WW2 RAAF veteran, expressed the thanks of all present to Ian for spending the evening with us. Merv managed to inject some further wartime experiences into his speech, sharing some special moments with Ian much to the delight of all present.

President Rob Lynch presented Ian with the latest Kevin O'Reilly book-Flyers of Time-an appropriate gift for former RAAF pilot Ian McRae. Rob thanked everyone for sharing the evening with us, and invited all present to have a cup of tea and further conversation.

The meeting closed at 8.50pm.

I am pleased to present my report for the year ending 30th June 2013

INTRODUCTION:

This report reveals another great year of progress with outstanding community support by volunteers, generous donors, the Hindmarsh Shire Council and local organizations.

NAHC membership base has grown from ninety-five to one hundred and twenty- five in this reporting year, with membership fees remaining at $30. Technology, via the skill of Anthony Carland (son of Board member Max) and Treasurer Trevor Borgelt now enables members to pay online via PayPal, a great step forward. We have members in most Australian States and Territories. Rob L nch President

Board meetings have been held each month, twelve in all.

Meeting Place: The Board meets in rooms at the Commercial Hotel and in the RSL Soldiers' Lounge in Clarence Street. The proprietors of the Commercial Hotel Mr Gary Driscoll and Mr Andrew Mclllree generously provide the rooms free of charge. This gives us a shop front window to advertise and inform the public about our activities. I thank Gary and Andrew for their interest and encouragement.

I also thank the Nhill sub branch of the RSL for giving us the use of the Soldiers' Lounge. We value the support of the RSL members, two of whom are valued and respected NAHC Board members - Max Carland and Merv Schneider - both ex WW2 RAAF.

COMMUNICATION:

• Nhill Anson Newsletter and the web page www.nhillaviationheritagecentre.com.au engage members and interested readers world-wide. The Board entrusts John Deckert with the production of the Nhill Anson Newsletters, and the management of the web page. I also acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Anthony Carland in Western Australia who has worked through many hours and technical issues to update the web page capabilities with John. Thanks to Jean Roberts for her supervision and input. • Culture Victoria web site: Through the good will of Paula Clark, CEO of the Wimmera Regional Library and Mary Dufty Nhill Librarian, NAHC now has a permanent place on the Culture Victoria web site. Grant money obtained by Paula enabled video maker Malcolm McKinnon to film Mervyn Schneider, Max Carland, Rob Lynch and Roger Meyer 0AM telling the story of the Nhill Aeradio Station. • NAHC Inc Board Bulletin Issue no 1 was produced entirely by Jean Roberts of Melbourne and posted to recipients in autumn. Jean is assisted locally by Joan Bennett. The Bulletin is produced quarterly. • Our local newspaper Nhill Free Press has given us excellent coverage. The paper is now owned by Gladdis Enterprises and I wish them continuing success in this venture. In addition, the Wimmera Mail Times and the Weekly Advertiser have both given the NAHC positive publicity. I thank them all. My thanks include Henry Berry who compiles the press clippings for our records. • The NAHC stand at the Nhill A&P Annual Show provides face-to-face contact with the general public and I'm pleased to report another successful day at the 2012 Nhill show. AVROANSON RESTORATION:

Project Manager Mick Kingwill continues to amaze us with his rebuilding and restoration of our Avro Anson W2364. Mick's knowledge and craftsmanship is outstanding, as is his commitment to finishing the project. Mick's fellow restorers Len Creek and Whimpey Reichelt are not far behind, with Len completing the tail plane and Whimpey completing one engine and starting the second one, all to a very high standard. As time permits, Kent Goldsworthy assists Mick working on W2364, and John Deckert helps keep things spick and span. Board members do as much as they can, but lack the expertise to do the hands-on work.

Recent visitor Richard Taylor, who had a distinguished career in the RAAF, remarked after seeing the restoration, that the rarity of the skills displayed by Mick, Whimpey and Len has virtually been lost in this fast moving technical age. Richard went on to say how very fortunate we are in Nhill to have these three people working together to restore Avro Anson W2364.

NHILL AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE/HANGAR BUILDING PROJECT:

After a four year campaign by NAHC with the unflagging assistance of Mr Bob Ahrens of Sheoak Log SA and supported by Federal MP for Mallee John Forrest, the Victorian Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty, and the Victorian Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell, the Hindmarsh Shire Council at the November 2012 meeting accepted Ahrens quotation for the proposed Heritage Centre at the Aerodrome.

This brought on a flurry of activity finalizing building plans, negotiating with Country Fire Authority about their requirements for fire services, and never ending talks with Douglas Gowans HSC Director of Infrastructure Services and his staff.

In the background there has been much rejoicing because the actual commencement of the construction of our building gets closer day by day. This project will absorb our time and energy in the next financial year. This time next year I hope to report completion of the building and a Mick and Rob discuss the building site memorable opening.

HERITAGE WALK PROJECT: Work continues on this project. We expect completion and opening to coincide with the opening of the Centre/Hangar in 2014

NAHC FLY-IN

Len Creek (Board Vice President) and his wife Jenny led a special committee which planned the Fly-In held on 20th October 2012. This herculean undertaking took two years to complete, but the outcomes proved worthy of the effort.

The Fly-In is reported elsewhere in this Annual Report, but I must acknowledge the huge effort put in by the NAHC Board, members and volunteers - a working party second to none. We again thank our very generous sponsors as well as members of the Emergency Services - the Propodollah Rural Fire Brigade, the Nhill SES and the Nhill Ambulance Service without whom we could not have staged the event. Nhill Rotary Club and Lions Club contributions were much appreciated as was the sterling performance of Brian Farmers as MC for the day. It is empowering to be part of a "whole of Nhill and District Workforce" with everyone working together thereby demonstrating the strength of our community and our determination to succeed.

The Fly-In was our second in five years, and I'm proud to say was a huge success!

• Book Launch: Kevin O'Reilly's second book - Flyers of Time - the story of the first fifty years of aviation in country Victoria and the Riverina - was launched during the Fly-In by Mr Tony Clark, aviation historian. Kevin donates $10 to NAHC from the sale of every book. Nhill features heavily in Kevin's book, and follows his first book "In Just Five Year" which is the story of the RAAF Air Base in Nhill from 1941-46. • A "Dream of Flight" art competition was conducted concurrently with the Fly-In by the Nhill Central Gallery group. Forty eight entries were submitted from across Victoria. The prize, presented by President Mrs Naomi Zanker at the Fly In, went to Peter Hill of Murtoa and had been decided by popular vote. Thanks to Naomi Zanker and Joan Bennett representing NAHC for initiating and carrying out this project.

Naomi Zanker and Rob Lynch at The Gallery Naomi Zanker and Joan Bennett

• Fly-In photos: It was a perfect day for photographers, and I sincerely thank all people who took photographs and donated copies to the NAHC for historical purposes.

BOARD PERFORMANCE: I'm proud of the extraordinary output and achievements of my Board members. They bring diverse talents and skills to the Board table for decision making; they respect each other's ability to contribute; and they are willing givers of time, equipment and whatever else is needed.

Given that each Board member has lots of other things to do; our combined NAHC achievements bear witness to an excellent Board performance.

NAHC SUB COMMITTEES:

• Finance Subcommittee: Trevor Borgelt Treasurer Convenor and members Mick Kingwill, Joan Bennett and Rob Lynch • Planning Subcommittee: Jean Roberts Convenor and members Trevor Borgelt, Nathan Wheeler, Rob Lynch, and Joan Bennett • Link Trainer Subcommittee: Neil Thomas Convenor and members Bill Day, Alan Conquer, and John Deckert • Nhill Aeradio Station Subcommittee: Roger Meyer 0AM convenor and members Len Creek, Trevor Borgelt, John Deckert, David Williams, and Rob Lynch

NAHC is represented on the Nhill Aerodrome Master Plan Advisory Committee which I have chaired. Other NAHC representatives are John Deckert, Trevor Borgelt, Allen Scott and Joan Bennett (Secretary).

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION:

In May 2013 another successful community open evening was held to highlight the Nhill Aeradio Station. Roger Meyer 0AM President of the Civil Aviation Historical Society/Airways Museum at Essendon Aerodrome was the guest speaker. The Aeradio Station is by far the best preserved example of the seventeen original stations built in Australia. The Aeradio Subcommittee was subsequently formed by NAHC

THANKYOU:

In conclusion I thank everyone who has helped NAHC during the year. This includes people who attended community meetings; those who gave assistance of all kinds at the Fly-In; donors of gifts of Avro Anson parts big and small; owners who provide shedding for our collections, even those who just share our excitement when milestones are reached. I look forward to another year of achievement working with the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre and the Nhill and District community. Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre Inc. Date,!^,.. '3 Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre Flv-ln Saturday 20th October 2012 What a great day for the Nhill 2012 Fly-In! The best count of aircraft is believed to be 95 in the parking area. This could well be the most aircraft on the ground at Nhill ever. Even when Nhill was an RAAF Base it is doubtful that there have been more than 30 or 40 at most. I think there was a regular contingent of about 20 Avro Ansons rising to 32 at times, perhaps a Tiger Moth or two and from time to time there were a few Wirraways, Beauforts, Hudsons and some other types.

Some of the 95 aircraft and 1500 people at the 2012 Fly-In. On Saturday 20th we had as feature aircraft a Mustang, Trojan, Wirraway, Stearman, Winjeel, CT4, four Tiger Moths and two Chipmunks. Flying was almost non-stop from midday till 4 PM with a display by one of the Roulettes team from Sale at 2 PM. This aircraft flew direct from Sale, arrived on time, performed a display and returned to Sale without landing. The display was certainly great to watch but it would have been even better if we could have seen the plane (PC9) close up and talked to the pilot. Daryl Moore also performed an excellent series of aerobatics with his high performance LXT Extra 300L. Jeff Trappet's Mustang was the aircraft I particularly wanted to see. I remember in September 1950 seeing three Mustangs land at Nhill. Unfortunately, one had a brake lock-up and flipped over onto its back. The pilot was slightly hurt and probably suffered some loss of pride but from that time on I have always had a special affection for Mustangs. Both pilot and aircraft have very interesting backgrounds. CAC £ Lesley Gordon Photo Mustang Mk21 was issued to No 71 Fighter Wing at RAAF Williamtown NSW in August 1949. It went to Tocumwal for disposal in 1955, was purchased privately and displayed in the Camden Aviation Museum until purchased by Jeff Trappett in 1978. The Mustang has since been completely rebuilt and is in excellent flying condition. Jeff Trappett graduated from the RAAF Pilot's course in 1968. After an operational tour in Vietnam Jeff spent a term instructing at Point Cook. He also flew solo and as a wingman for the elite Roulettes Aerobatic Team based at East Sale. In 1979 Jeff flew Fl-lls at RAAF Amberley and was promoted to Squadron Leader in 1981 and commanding Officer of No 21 Squadron based at Laverton in Victoria. Jeff is now involved in the Latrobe Flying Museum at Taralgon in Victoria. The Trojan flown by Richard Smart was also great to see. It must have been a most frightening sight to be in a war zone and see this great bullock of a plane thundering down with all arms blazing . Just the sound and bulk of the aircraft would be enough to instill fear into anyone being attacked. The T28 Trojan was manufactured by North American Aviation as an advanced training aircraft Janine Grover Photo particularly to prepare pilots for Sabre Jets. This Trojan was manufactured in 1955, one of the last to be produced. Pilot and Owner Richard Smart says the Trojan has a top speed of 300 Knots and Cruises at about 200 using about 200 litres of fuel per hour. This aircraft saw service in Vietnam by the US navy then in 1983 it spent 4 years in a Navy museum. Richard purchased the aircraft earlier this year.

Ross Smith a contractor Lesley Gordon Photo from Queensland and avid aviation enthusiast discovered a number of dilapidated Stearmans in storage while on a trip to the USA in 1986. He purchased six and shipped them to Australia in the same year. Stearman VH - JQY was the second of these aircraft to be restored to flying condition in 1990. Murray Lanyon, a member of the Echuca Aero Club purchased the Stearman in 2001. Stearman VH - JQY has only a total of 1980 hours of service time since being built in 1943. Murray Lanyon, the present owner, who was also born in 1943, often states that the aircraft is generally in a lot better condition than the owner. The Hangar Exhibition and the Flight Office Display were also features of the day. In the hangar was a great assortment of engines, parts, radios and other displays. Our Avro Anson Project Manager, Mike Kingwill has spent so much time working on the Avro Anson I find it hard to imagine how he managed to set up a display of five Pratt and Whitney engines for the Fly-In. These ranged from a fourteen cylinder workhorse to a small two cylinder engine from an electrical power plant. All were impressively presented on individual stands. Mike also had many other bits and pieces too numerous to mention. It was an exhausting day for the NAHC board but a day I enjoyed immensely. John Deckert. LINK TRAINER REPORT Negotiations by Board members with the Loader family of South Australia resulted in two Link Trainers being housed in Nhill by the NAHC. The intention is to maintain one in good working condition and fully restore the other. Both units appear to be almost complete but a substantial amount of work will be necessary to bring them back to operating condition.

The original Link Trainer was created in 1929 out of the need for a safe way to teach new pilots how to fly by instruments. Ed Link, a former organ and nickelodeon builder, used his knowledge of pumps, valves and bellows to create a that responded to the pilot's controls in a manner similar to an actual aircraft. These simulators became famous during World War II, when they were used as a key pilot training aid by almost every combatant nation. NHILL AERADIO STATION REPORT Nhill was one of seventeen Aeradio Stations constructed throughout Australia in 1938/39. The Nhill Aeradio Station is by far the best preserved example.

Photos from Beverley Edge whose father, Allan Taylor, was in charge of the Nhill Aeradio Station in 1965

Aeradio Stations were vital to Australian aviation communication and guidance. This national network was set up by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) along the main air routes in Australia. As there has not been pressure for alternate uses of the site, the Nhill Aeradio station offers the best opportunity for restoration. Detailed examination of the Nhill site is the starting point for a much broader national project. Possibilities for restoration includes re-creation in the radio room: 1. equipment racks - some radio equipment has been collected from . 2. console on the table, 3. display area, 4. open up the Lorenz building, with technical details, 5. replication, supported by diagrams, and 6. interpretive materials in display cases.
