The illustration in AC 43.13-1B, Chapter 11, Figure 11-14 shows exactly how to do this correctly. Small wires can be secured with nylon cable ties. I highly recommend using only cable ties that have a small spring steel locking tab molded into the head of the cable ties. We use cable ties sold under the brand name of Ty-Rap avail- able on the internet. If you are securing two wires that cross at a high angle of incidence, use wire ties that are secured to one another. This method will eliminate abrasion of the insulation of those two crossing wires. I also employ this two-wire-tie method when securing any wiring to the metal airframe or engine mount.

Just passing through It’s also important to check the condi- tion of rubber grommets that are installed where wires, hoses and hard lines pass through baffles and firewalls. It’s not uncommon to find a deteriorated grom- met that is no longer keeping an important wire or hose from rubbing against bare metal. Old rubber is often bad rubber. Pay very close attention to any place where a wire, hose or cable passes through the firewall. Any firewall pass- through must be of such a design that it can isolate the aircraft’s cabin from a fire in the engine compartment. “Creative” ways of passing wires and hoses through the firewall are found in some older air- “Clamping at a bulkhead hole” is an example of the planes. A rubber grommet or silicone seal excellent guidance AC 43.13-1B provides.

CESSNA FLYER (25) MAY 2019 will not stop a fire from getting through the firewall. Many airframe manufacturers origi- nally installed engineered metal firewall pass-throughs that protect and seal the wire or hose as it passes through the fire- wall. This type of firewall pass-through is available from Aircraft Spruce. (Another CFA supporter, Wag-Aero, carries a stainless steel firewall shield. —Ed.) At Air Mod, we install only orange SCAT silicone ducting, available from Aircraft Spruce (as well as CFA A simple rubber grommet supporter Chief Aircraft and others is not the correct method —Ed.). We use quality stainless steel for running a wire through screw clamps when fixing these systems. a bulkhead. Often, the damage to these SCAT hoses is caused by poor routing and clamping that allows the hose to get too close to the exhaust system or allows it to rub against a hard object in the engine bay. CESSNA FLYER (46) MAY 2019 CESSNA FLYER (47) MAY 2019 1976, I was 25 years old. I had IN invented an anti-theft device for cars and trucks called the RAVELCO. I was selling my product to car dealerships along the Mexican border in Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo and El Paso, Texas. At first, like anything else, my business took time to get going. In early 1980, my business was grow- ing, and I needed a faster way to get from town to town, so I started taking flying lessons. After my third lesson at William P. Hobby International Airport (KHOU) in Houston, Texas, I pur- chased a brand-new 1980 Cessna 172N Skyhawk from Cessna. I had it for one year and traded it for a much faster, brand-new 1981 Cessna T210N Turbo Centurion (the last one made that year). In the wintertime, I would load up six people and their baggage, skis and whatever with full tanks and take off from Houston and fly nonstop to Aspen. We also used the plane to go to Disney World in Orlando and to the horse races in New Orleans on Sundays. We really enjoyed our plane. The useful load of the T210 was incredible. It could carry practically anything you could put in Photo: Jimmy Raviele

I was worried that it would be stuffed in a con- tainer without any care and shipped over. That was not the case at all.

CESSNA FLYER (48) MAY 2019 Upon receipt of additional pictures from the seller, it was apparent to Vinny and Jimmy that the P210R had been taken care of over the years.

After a few months in transit, the aircraft arrived at Vance Brand Airport (KLMO) in Longmont, Colorado. Vinny and Jimmy were excited to see the P210R emerge from the container, but it was evident that there was a lot of work left to do before it was flyable again.

It said Parts they only made 40 of them and there avionics were only 24 still flying, with only EnginEs three 1986 P210R models remaining. The sad thing was they were nearly impossible to find. We looked for the bet- ter part of a year. On Sept. 26, 2016, Jimmy saw a plane which caught his eye during an online search for P210Rs. Longmont, Colorado. The owner, Kent Larson, was selling a P210R for a man who originally had it exported to Australia in 2011. The owner also had a Phenom 300, so he was not using the P210R. As a matter of fact, the P210R sat in his hangar for three years. They had a few pictures on the web- site and the airplane still looked new. The factory-new engine had only 296 hours on it. It had every item that you could put on a plane—every factory option from Cessna, along with a full avionics suite. Our longtime goal is to purchase a Cessna Denali when it debuts in 2019 or 2020. But in the meantime, I knew the P210R was the perfect plane for us. I called Larson and talked to him about pricing. On Nov. 11, 2016, I told Larson I wanted it, but I wanted more clear, up- to-date pictures. On Dec. 1, Larson sent me more pictures that he received from Australia. I saw what a nice P210 it was, and signed a contract.

CESSNA FLYER (59) MAY 2019 No More Upside-Down Wedding Cakes: GPS-BASED CLASS B AIRSPACE

Changes to SFO’s Class B airspace provide benefits for General Aviation pilots. by John D. Ruley

CESSNA FLYER (60) MAY 2019 summer, as president of the LAST Modesto Airport Pilots As- sociation (MAPA), I was pleased to host FAA Northern California (NorCal) Traffic Control representative Mike Seko, who briefed several dozen

local pilots on changes to the San Fran- ® cisco International Airport (KSFO) Class Concorde RG Batteries B airspace. I’ll never forget the reaction are the preferred OEM from one of my fellow pilots to a dia- gram showing the new airspace design: and PMA batteries for Cessna “I don’t know what that is, but it ain’t aircraft thanks to sustained no upside-down wedding cake!” He was referring to the way most of starting performance, us were introduced to Class B (and C) operating life, and power airspace during initial training, when the shape was described as an upside-down output from -40°C to 71°C. wedding cake. The airspace was defined by distance from a central point. The central point is usually a VORTAC or VOR/DME. If a navaid is not available at the primary airport, the center of the primary airport is used. The airspace is smallest at the surface, increasing in radius at different altitudes, until you wind up with the largest radius near the top of the controlled airspace. In RG24-16 SFO’s case, this would be 10,000 feet msl. 13.6 AH | 24 Volt The new airspace, by contrast, isn’t TSO Approved! defined by distance from the center—in- stead, it’s based on a series of GPS fixes. Which leads to the first takeaway for pilots: If you’re going to be flying in or around the SFO Class B airspace, you need a GPS with an up-to-date aviation database. That’s a good idea anyway, but with the new airspace I’d call it an abso- lute necessity! And before I go any further—whether RG24-15M you fly on the West Coast or not, this is 13.6 AH | 24 Volt going to matter to you. To find out why, TSO Approved! read on. So why the change here and now? Ac- cording to Seko’s presentation, it was driven by a desire to optimize descent into the airspace for today’s airliners, which have more efficient wing de- signs. That leads to an optimal 2.72- to 2.85-degree descent angle, shallower than the traditional 3-degree glideslope. It also takes advantage of modern RG-35AXC flight management system capabilities to 33 AH | 12 Volt control the descent both vertically and laterally. This saves fuel, and it results in a smaller noise footprint. But for us piston drivers, there’s a cool side benefit: The Class B airspace re- served for the jets to maneuver in is actu- ally smaller, leaving more space for us to

CESSNA FLYER (63) MAY 2019 Vacation With Friends: Classen HomeStay

By Heather Skumatz

Take a breather in Danforth, Illinois, and find out what this section of the American Heartland has waiting for you. Photo courtesy Classen HomeStay

CESSNA FLYER (64) MAY 2019 rural village of Danforth, Illinois is THE on the far eastern edge of Central Illinois near the Indiana border. It was established in 1872 when the Illinois Central railroad extended down from Kankakee. In fact, Danforth and the surrounding area could well have been the inspiration for the “houses, farms and fields” in the Steve Goodman folk song, “City of New Orleans.” (The song was first recorded by its writer in 1971, but made famous by Arlo Guthrie in 1972. —Ed.) I recently talked with two of Danforth’s longtime residents, Charles (Chuck) and Norma Classen, to find out more about the allure of this quiet Midwestern spot.

Vacation With Friends: Classen HomeStay Bed & Breakfast Fly-Inn When we talked in early April, I found Classen HomeStay out that reservations at the bed-and-break- fast inn owned by the Classens are starting By Heather Skumatz to pick up for the summer season. The facility is often used by people coming to the area for family-related Take a breather in Danforth, Illinois, events, such as graduation parties or and find out what this section of reunions. The Classens have welcomed guests from as far away as Germany and Sweden. The inn offers three separate bedrooms and a maximum of six adult guests. “There is a gathering room that includes a piano, pool table, atrium and a large library,” Norma explained. “A wonderful breakfast is included with each night of your stay,” she added, “and fresh cof- fee—several blends—and tea are avail- able 24 hours.” The home has lots of windows, and there are great sunsets and sunrises here with the wide-open Illinois skies. “We must have thousands of [sunset] photos,” Chuck said. But the property has another pan- orama that will draw in Cessna Flyers: a fully operational, well-maintained grass runway. Chuck and Norma are both pilots. “I had always flown off of 6,000 x 150 foot runways,” Norma explained, “and when I first flew in to the ‘old’ run- way, I wasn’t sure I could land on that little postage stamp!” “So when the opportunity arose to make it bigger at the request of the FAA, I favored it with no question. When

CESSNA FLYER (65) MAY 2019 the new runway was finished, it was no problem,” she continued. “Who can argue with longer and wider?” The property in Danforth has been in the Classen family for several genera- tions. Chuck learned to fly in a PA-11 and a Stinson 108-1 on the original grass strip. “The original strip was put in in 1946 by my father,” said Chuck. “At one time, there, were 7 aircraft based here.” Today, there are three. The current turf Runway 18/36 is 2,585 x 100 feet, while the taxiway is 1,800 x 60 feet. Norma manages the bed-and-breakfast operations, and both Chuck and Norma are active in the meals and groundskeep- ing. “We mow the runway, taxiway, a field, a yard and two lots with the same zero-turn mower. I have the ability to remove snow [from the runway] in the winter,” Chuck said. “It clips down to about 3 ½ to 4 inches, and isn’t all clover, like some farm strips,” he explained. “This is a perma- nently established runway—and it’s open on each end. No obstructions.” There are anchors in concrete on the property for tiedowns, but fuel is not available here.

This means, in order to use the runway, you have to have prior permission, indicate you have reviewed the airport rules and sign a waiver. (See Resources for more information. —Ed.) The Classen Memorial Airport and Classen HomeStay would be perfect for a quiet summer getaway for a small group of GA flyers—and the Classens are willing to offer a special rate for Photo courtesy Classen HomeStay CFA members. CESSNA FLYER (75) MAY 2019 DYNON LOWERS PRICING ON SKYVIEW LINE, MAKES PROGRESS ON DYNON CERTIFIED, ADVANCED PANEL

WOODINVILLE, WASH., March 25, 2019 – Consistent with Dynon’s long- standing commitment to affordability, while at the same time offering best- in-class features and performance, The Dynon Groups announces product line and pricing changes for 2019. “As the SkyView line has evolved over the years, it has grown to four differ- ent models, including SkyView HDX, SkyView Touch, SkyView Classic and SkyView SE. With SkyView HDX rep- resenting our state-of-the-art offering with its enhanced user interface, better display quality, and a full touch interface, we felt there was unnecessary overlap in the model line-up,” explained Randy Lervold, Dynon’s VP Marketing & Sales. “With the avionics market getting ever more competitive, we’ve decided to trim the line to make the product model steps clearer and at the same time sharpen the price points on our original SkyView family models,” said Lervold. Effective immediately, Dynon is lowering the price on both SkyView Classic and SkyView SE systems and is retiring SkyView Touch. SkyView Classic and SkyView SE systems will see price drops of between $200 and $500 per display, depending on the model. “We believe these adjustments make for a more competitive lineup that accommodates a wider range of builder budgets and panel plans. Many builders want a reduced, simplified feature set and are targeting a lower budget. Dynon will help them get there,” Lervold said.

Dynon Certified progress In 2018, Dynon received STC approval for its flagship SkyView HDX system for most Cessna 172 models and then completed an amendment to include its complete product suite, including auto- pilot. For 2019, it is expanding both the approved model list as anticipated and selectively adding installation centers for its Dynon Certified line. CESSNA FLYER (76) MAY 2019 Work continues on the piston twin Piper Seneca with approval expected in the first half of 2019. Dynon indicates that next up is the Cessna 182. The company expects that to be done before the end of 2019. “Since the outset of the Certified pro- gram, Dynon has chosen to partner with a limited number of Authorized Dynon Installation Centers that are committed to offering an affordable, quality cus- tomer experience,” said Lervold. Dynon is pleased to announce the recent addition of Air Plains in Wellington, Kansas, and Five Rivers Aviation in Livermore, California, to its installation network.

Advanced Panel from Advanced Flight Systems The Advanced Flight Systems division of Dynon continues to be at the forefront of avionics innovation with its Advanced Panel complete avionics panel solution. Buying a prebuilt custom panel has always meant buying from a company that essentially acts as a system integra- tor from multiple vendors. “With the Advanced Panel concept, almost everything in the panel is designed, manufactured and configured by Advanced and Dynon,” said company president Rob Hickman. “This turnkey solution is really resonat- ing with customers who are thrilled to be able to work with one resource to design, manufacture and support the installation Taking you to places you of their dream panel,” Hickman said, used to only dream of going… One of the keys to Advanced’s success is the Advanced Control Module (ACM). The ACM forms the heart of the aircraft sys- tems and is the only product of its kind. It’s the first and only comprehensive power and distribution center for an aircraft’s electrical system, avionics, head- sets, aircraft lights, autopilot servos, trim servos, flap motor, control sticks, panel switches, and all customized harnesses. Hickman added, “All of these connect to the ACM with premade harnesses, allowing a plug-and-play installation, ...
