Emily Hanrahan Howell Warner October 30, 1939 - July 3, 2020 Captain Emily Howell-Warner passed away on July 3, 2020. She was preceded in death by son Stanley, husband Julius, brother Jack and his wife Jan. Her surviving family members are brother Dennis Hanrahan (Jeane), brother Miles (Pat) Hanrahan (Delores), and brother Richard (Dick) Hanrehan; sister Eileen Hanrahan Spillane. She also is survived by several stepchildren and their children: John and Carre Warner, David and Kris Warner, Julia and Paul (Cook), Elizabeth and Joe (Cowan), and Suzanne (Hagen). Emily had too many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews to name, although they all referred to her lovingly as "Auntie Em." Born on October 30, 1939, in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from Holy Family High School. At 16, and before learning to drive, Emily embarked on a journey that would earn her a place in history and empower women all over the world to follow their dreams. As a young woman, Emily bought a ticket on Frontier Airlines to visit a friend working in Gunnison, Colorado. During that trip, she was invited into the cockpit to look around, and from that moment, was hooked. She knew she no longer wanted to be a passenger, and she wanted to fly! After that first trip, Emily asked her parents if she could take flying lessons. The Hanrahan's, had six children and could not provide Emily with her coveted flying lessons. Emily, always determined, said, "Don't worry, I will pay for the lessons myself." Both parents agreed, And that is how her now-famous career began. -

THE NINETY NINES THE NINETY NINES Captain Nancy Aldrich, aviation writer If you have been reading my blogs, I'm sure you have noticed several references to The Ninety Nines. This article will explain just who they are and what they do. In 1929, the first All Women's Air Derby was held during the National Air Races. It attracted 20* brave, adventurous young women, and covered 2,759 miles. The race began at Santa Monica, California, and ended in Cleveland, Ohio. To qualify as a racer, the women had to have a minimum of 100 flight hours, at least 25 of which had to have been on cross country flights. These were the same requirements for men competing in National Air Races. In the early days of aviation there were not many women pilots, but most of the women had met at previous events. They were a tight band and looked forward to this first real race for women. It was a chance to prove their skills to the general public. They took this event very seriously and were somewhat upset when the humorous commentator, Will Rogers dubbed it, "The Powder Puff Derby." On August 18, 1929, nineteen pilots took off, one more left the next day. Fifteen of the women arrived in Cleveland, 9 days later. Almost every pilot had some kind of problem during the race. Tragically, Marvel Crosson was killed when she crashed in Gila River Valley. Her crash was attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. When it was learned that she had been killed there was a public outcry to cancel the race. -

Students also were taught skills of other disciplines such as math, geography, cartography, and science under real job-training conditions. The entire three-year program in aerospace education included three year-long courses, totaling three units of high school credit and was made available to all interested tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students. The program was supplemented with speakers, audio-visuals, and field trips; students in each course were required to do an independent study project. An evaluation of the project reflects aviation student profiles, class attendance, course interest, future vocational goals of students, and interest-aptitude survey. Other aspects covered are the impact of Title III, cooperating agencies, information dissemination, and costs. More than half of this document is devoted to appendixes describing student aviation projects and reports, curriculum guides of courses, students survey, photographs, evaluation samples (OVIS, Strong, and GATB),- and phase-in report. -

WINTER JANUARY 2015 #58 Our own Captain Emily Howell Warner was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 4, 2014. The announcement of her selection read, "Emily Howell Warner – Warner was an experienced Colorado flight school manager, flight instructor and FAA designated flight examiner holding multiple ratings when she was hired by Frontier Airlines in 1973, earning her additional distinction as the first female captain of a scheduled, jet-equipped U.S. airline. She amassed more than 21,000 flight hours over her career.” (See page 3) 2 The FRONTIER NEWS is published quarterly and dedicated to ex-employees, friends, family and fans of the “old” Frontier Airlines which “died” on August 24, 1986 and was “buried” on May 31, 1990. It is a non-profit operation. All income goes into keeping the NEWS going. Opinions expressed in this newsletter are those of the author and not the editor or the publication. Publishing dates are October for Fall, January for Winter, April for Spring and July for Summer. Articles and photos are welcomed and subject to editing and space requirements. This assessment report was prepared at the request of the City and includes a discussion of the survey methodology utilized, a concise description of the feature (subject property); a summarized historical context of the Santa Monica Airport, compass rose, and related themes; evaluation for significance under the City of Santa Monica landmark criteria; photographs and other applicable supporting materials. OAC evaluated the subject property, the Santa Monica Airport Compass Rose, to determine whether it appears to satisfy one or more of the statutory landmark criteria pursuant to Chapter 9.56 (Landmarks and Historic Districts Ordinance) of the Santa Monica Municipal Code. The evaluation assessment and this report were prepared by Jan Ostashay, principal with OAC, who satisfies the U.S.
