Volume 30 Issue 3 HMCS SACKVILLE Newsletter June–July 2012 WENDALL BROWN HONOURED Len Canfield The 2012 Battle of the Atlantic dinner aboard HMCS SACKVILLE was not only a time to remember and honour all those who served during the longest battle of World War II but also to recognize Commander Wendall Brown who is retiring after nine years as Commanding Officer of SACKVILLE. Vice Admiral (ret’d) Hugh MacNeil, Chair of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust welcomed guests and trustees, including Rear Admiral David Gardam, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic; naval historian Roger Sarty, the guest speaker and Commander (ret’d) Rowland Marshall. Dr. Sarty outlined the significance of the Battle of the Atlantic, its impact on the Atlantic region and the St. Lawrence and Canada’s major contribution to the Allied victory at sea. Cdr Marshall, a retired Saint Mary’s University professor and long-time trustee reflected on his wartime experience as a young sailor. A number of presentations were made to Wendall Brown for his unstinting service to SACKVILLE and the Trust over the years. These included the Maritime Command Commendation which was presented by RAdm Gardam. A number of speakers noted Wendall’s ‘roll up your sleeves’ involvement in all aspects of ship operations, from the bridge to the engine room as well as his ‘good fortune’ on behalf of Canada’s Naval Memorial when making the rounds of Dockyard shops and services. 1 Cdr Brown has turned over command of SACKVILLE to Lieutenant Commander Jim Reddy who has been actively involved with the ship since retiring from the Navy in 2003, including serving as First Lieutenant (XO). -

Registration check-in, held in the gym, generally takes about 30 minutes, and you may want to have transportation wait. Students should check-in and proceed to their designated space. _____________________________________________________________________ CREDIT Research Paper No. 12/01 _____________________________________________________________________ Origins of the Sicilian Mafia: The Market for Lemons by Arcangelo Dimico, Alessia Isopi, Ola Olsson Abstract Since its first appearance in the late 1800s, the origins of the Sicilian mafia have remained a largely unresolved mystery. Both institutional and historical explanations have been proposed in the literature through the years. In this paper, we develop an argument for a market structure-hypothesis, contending that mafia arose in towns where firms made unusually high profits due to imperfect competition. We identify the market for citrus fruits as a sector with very high international demand as well as substantial fixed costs that acted as a barrier to entry in many places and secured high profits in others. We argue that the mafia arose out of the need to protect citrus production from predation by thieves. Using the original data from a parliamentary inquiry in 1881-86 on all towns in Sicily, we show that mafia presence is strongly related to the production of orange and lemon. This result contrasts recent work that emphasizes the importance of land reforms and a broadening of property rights as the main reason for the emergence of mafia protection. Students also were taught skills of other disciplines such as math, geography, cartography, and science under real job-training conditions. The entire three-year program in aerospace education included three year-long courses, totaling three units of high school credit and was made available to all interested tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students. The program was supplemented with speakers, audio-visuals, and field trips; students in each course were required to do an independent study project. An evaluation of the project reflects aviation student profiles, class attendance, course interest, future vocational goals of students, and interest-aptitude survey. Other aspects covered are the impact of Title III, cooperating agencies, information dissemination, and costs. More than half of this document is devoted to appendixes describing student aviation projects and reports, curriculum guides of courses, students survey, photographs, evaluation samples (OVIS, Strong, and GATB),- and phase-in report. -

Membership Requirements: Information about participation in any student organization may be obtained through the Student Activities Office located in the Cheney Student Center, Room 100. Requirements and procedures for establishing a new student organization, student organization rules and regulations, and student organization advisory guidelines are also available in the Student Activities Office. The development of student organizations is determined by student interest and faculty sponsorship.
