The following is a preserved in Australia, It is restricted to those at present on public display, those capable of eventually being put on display, and those aircraft privately owned which may be available for viewing on request. The list does not include aircraft which lie derelict on farms, etc., and have no definite future. There are also many aircraft of historical interest which are currently flying in Australia, and several which are being rebuilt for flying, and these are also not included. As far as is known, this is a complete listing within the terms of reference used, and is current to December 1968. Early in 1960 public interest in the collection had grown to th© point where we realised the need to establish a Museum devoted solely to the display of aircraft and engines. In June 1943, the Mosquito was the fastest operational aircraft in the world and the first modern front line fighter of all wooden construction to go into service. During 1944 Mosquito aircraft carried as large a bomb load to as did four engined bombers with crews of up to eleven men.
