The Buddha lived and taught in the northeastern Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[2] He is recognized by adherents as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (or dukkha), achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth. Two major branches of Buddhism are recognized: Theravada ("The School of the Elders") and Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle"). Theravada—the oldest surviving branch—has a widespread following in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and Mahayana is found throughout East Asia and includes the traditions of Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Shingon, Tendai and Shinnyo-en. In some classifications Vajrayana, a subcategory of Mahayana, is recognized as a third branch.

  • Hitler's Policy Towards the Soviet Union January 1933
HITLER'S POLICY TOWARDS THE SOVIET UNION JANUARY 1933 - JUNE I94I by HARVEY LEONARD DYCK B.A., University of British Columbia, 195?< A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in International Studies We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA September, 195>8 ABSTRACT Within a year of his accession to power, Hitler, by concluding a non-aggression pact with Poland and by bringing relations with Russia to an impasse, had revolut• ionized German foreign policy. This policy reversal was chosen, primarily, for tactical reasons and only second• arily for ideological reasons. Prom the outset, it is true, relations with Russia were made difficult by Hitler's per• secution of the German Communist Party and by his own hatred for Bolshevism. But it was only after Poland had twice threatened a preventative war against Germany and after Germany had become diplomatically isolated through her desertion of the League of Nations, that Hitler decided upon a rapprochement with Poland and a break with Russia. This policy was finalized by the German-Polish Non-Aggression Pact of January, 1934• The political orientation of German foreign policy, established by this pact, remained fixed in its outlines for the following five years. During these years, Hitler used the anti-Communist bogey.to justify his foreign policy coups and to ease his relations with Poland. Russia herself, he ignored as a power factor in opposition. Nor did he consider a political understanding with her. However, he did toy with the idea of her as an object of aggression.

  • Seventeenth-Century Gdansk Instrumental Music Sources
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 11,2012 © PTPN & Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2012 DANUTA SZLAGOWSKA Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music, Gdańsk Seventeenth-century Gdansk instrumental music sources ABSTRACT: This article represents an attempt to provide a synthetic presentation of seventeenth-century Gdańsk instrumental music sources, comprising three groups: 1 - manuscripts and old prints, currently found in Gdańsk or elsewhere, that include works by musicians who were active in Gdańsk; 2 - manu scripts from Gdańsk libraries that include works by composers not active in Gdańsk; 3 - manuscripts of Gdańsk provenance, now held in libraries outside Gdańsk, that include works by composers not active in Gdańsk. Several types of sources have survived that are characteristic of the age in which they were created. These include lute tablatures, keyboard tablatures and manuscripts and old prints with compositions for various forces, including keyboard instruments, solo instruments (violin, cornet) with b.c., a 2 and a 3 type compositions for violin (in one case for cornet and bassoon with b.c.) and also larger ensembles, chiefly strings with b.c. The repertoire of the Gdańsk sources is similar to that of other seventeenth- century European sources. It includes dances, canzonas, fantasias, preambles, sonatas, suites and, in the earliest manuscripts, intabulations of both religious and secular songs. In total, there are some 800 extant compositions, of which the vast majority (around 700) are found in lute and keyboard tablatures. Some compositions may be considered unique in Old Polish instrumental music. They are works by the composers Marcin Gremboszewski and Heinrich Dóbel, who were active in Gdańsk, representing early examples of solo compositions for cornet and violin with b.c., as well as a chamber piece for cornet and bassoon with b.c.

  • The Mind of Adolf Hitler. the Secret Wartime Report
BY WALTER C. LANGER WHY THE EVIL GENIUS ACTED THE WAY HE DID. “A MASTERPIECE.” —The New Republic — PROBING THE STRANGE PSYCHE OF ADOLF HITLER During the dark years of World War II, there was no one who fully understood Nazi Germany’s leader —or could predict his behavior. No one except Walter C. Langer, an American psy- chiatrist, who was asked in 1943 to prepare this psychological analysis of Hitler for the OSS and the Allies. By drawing on intelligence reports, interview- ing people who had known Hitler, and studying his writings, Dr. Langer was able to make astonishing predictions about Hitler’s future conduct which were borne out in history. Here is the most fascinating and significant exploration ever made into the uncon- scious conflicts behind the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler. “AMAZING. An intriguing and significant book that helps explain our century’s greatest enigma.” John Toland “FASCINATING. Langer outlines Hitler’s various manias (wolves, severed heads, pornography), phobias (horses, germs, moonlight, syphilis), and contradictions.”—Newsweek “A MASTERPIECE. A powerful study, remarkable both for the scope of Dr. Langer’s understanding and the depth of his research.”—The New Republic “FASCINATING READING. Stands the test of time remarkably well.”—Los Angeles Times “AN ABSORBING, FAR-REACHING BOOK.” —Chicago Tribune/Book World — Other SIGNET Books You’ll Want to Read TREBLINKA by Jean-Francois Steiner. An inter- national bestseller, the powerful story of a group of Jewish prisoners who led a successful armed rebellion against their Nazi captors in a model death camp. Goda This dissertation investigates Nazi Germany’s diplomacy and intelligence- gathering in Argentina from 1933-1945. It does so from three perspectives. This study first explores the rivalries that characterized the bureaucracy in the Third Reich. It argues that those rivalries negatively affected Germany’s diplomatic position in Argentina. The actions of the AO in Argentina in the 1930s were indicative of this trend. This created a fear of fifth-column activity among Latin American governments with large German populations. Second, this study explores the rivalry between the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD) of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (Reich Security Main Office, RSHA) and Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Ministry, AA). It argues that the rivalry between these two organizations in Argentina was part of a larger plan on the part of Amt VI, SS Foreign Intelligence to usurp the functions of the AA.

Anna M. Cienciala. April 2011. Prefatory Note to Poland and the Western Powers 1938‐ 1939. The book – printed in England and Canada, so with English spelling ‐‐ is a revised version of my Ph.D. dissertation based on Polish archival, diplomatic documents, also on archival and published western diplomatic documents available at the time. After March 1939 (British guarantee of Polish independence), the Epilogue carries the story up to the German and Soviet attacks on Poland in September 1939. A more detailed account, based on archival and published sources available since 1968, is given in the article “Poland in British and French Policy in 1939: determination to fight – or avoid war?” (The Polish Review, vol. XXXIV, 1989, no.3; reprinted with minor abbreviations in Patrick Finney, ed., The Origins of the Second World War, London, New York, Sidney, Auckland, 1997, pp. 413‐432). There are some errors in the book, written without the benefit of Google and online sources, unavailable at the time. On page 1, note 1, instead of the text, lines 7‐8 on Roman Dmowski: “he spent the last years of his life in exile, returning to die in Poland,” should read: He spent the last two years of his life on his sickbed, dying on January 2, 1939. 1 On page 119, par. 1, line 9 from bottom, (Hitler suggesting Poland agree to ceding Germany a strip of land through the Polish Corridor for the German Autobahn [Highway] and railway line to East Prussia). I misread the letter m in the document; instead of: thirty miles wide, the text should read: thirty meters wide.
