Ela é, antes, como uma partitura voltada para a ressonância sempre renovada da leitura, libertando o texto da matéria das palavras e conferindo-lhe existência atual.” Hans Robert Jauss (1994) RESUMO O presente trabalho tem por premissa estudar e analisar a obra homônima de Carlos Gomes e José de Alencar, O Guarani - uma em formato de ópera, outra na forma literária, investigando seu surgimento, as relações com o contexto histórico em que foram produzidas, bem como os pontos relacionados ao movimento nacionalista do Romantismo. A pesquisa analisa a tradução intersemiótica, o diálogo entre a obra literária e a ópera, e as transformações decorrentes das adaptações da obra literária de Alencar para a ópera de Carlos Gomes. No processo deste tipo de tradução, observa-se que cada linguagem tem suas particularidades, os signos são outros, algumas ideias do contexto romântico nacionalista também foram alteradas, mas o percurso da tradução intersemiótica permite estas adaptações, que não questionam ou subvertem o original, e sim contribuem para sua permanência. ABSTRACT The present research aims to study and to analyze the homonymous work of Carlos Gomes and José de Alencar, O Guarani – being one in the form of an opera, and another in the literary form, investigating its emergence, the relations with the historical context in which they were produced, as well as the points related to the nationalist movement of Romantism. The research analyzes the intersemiotic translation, the dialogue between the literary work and the opera, and the transformations brought about from the adaptations of the literary work of Alencar to the opera of Carlos Gomes. In the process of this kind of translation, it is observed that each language has its particularities, the signs are other, some ideas of the nationalist Romantic context have also been modified, but the process of intersemiotic translation allows those adaptations that do not question or subvert the original, but rather contribute to its permanence. Despite the importance of this call to a more planetary approach to literature, the turn to a world scope often recapitulates problems associated with the nineteenth century emergence of the term “world literature”: local concerns and traditions dissolve into the search for general patterns or persistent dependencies. If these new comparative models tend to separate the local from the construction of literature’s “world,” significant strains of Latin Americanist criticism have also sought to distance the local from literature and the literary, often identifying the latter alternatively with either the collapse of previous emancipatory dreams or a complicity with power and domination. Focusing on several central narrative texts of the Brazilian Clarice ! ii! Lispector and the Argentine Juan José Saer, I argue for a more contested notion of both the literary and the world. Both Lispector’s and Saer’s pairs of narrative texts in this dissertation make it difficult to untangle the literary construction of their respective worlds from local forms of alterity and otherness.

I trace parallel developments in the production and reception of silent crime and adventure film in Brazil's First Republic and in revolutionary and post-revolutionary Mexico, at a moment when industrialization and urbanization were reshaping daily experience without eliminating profound social inequalities. Re-evaluating critical frameworks premised on cinema’s relationship to the experience of modernity in the industrialized U.S. and Western Europe, I argue that these early twentieth-century cultures of popular sensationalism signal the degree to which public life in Mexico and Brazil has been conditioned by violence and social exclusion linked to legacies of neo-colonial power. In the first half of the dissertation, I examine cinematic re-enactments of real-life crimes filmed in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Mexico City between 1908 and 1919.

The central focus of the study is the period from 1537, when Spaniards founded Asunción in the territories of the Guaraní-speaking Carios, until the establishment of the encomienda, a colonial labour system, in 1556. Through a close reading of archival documents and chronicles, the study presents a narrative history of the transcultural dynamics of Spanish-Guaraní relations, including the convergence of kinship and alliances, cacique and conquistador rivalries, competing spiritual beliefs of shamanism and Catholicism, and the role of castaways, lenguas (interpreters) indigenous women, priests, and mestizos as intermediaries. How these transcultural dynamics were dominated by indigenous norms until 1556, and how they shaped the cultural, social, and spiritual dimensions of mestizaje (racial mixing) are analysed. The study covers key moments in the conquest and early colonial period. These include Sebastián Caboto’s exploration of the Río de la Plata from 1527 to 1529; Pedro de Mendoza’s armada to the Río de la Plata in 1535 that led to the founding of Asunción in 1537 and the first governorship of Domingo Martínez de Irala from 1539 to 1542; the rule of Asunción by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca as adelantado from 1542 to 1544; and Domingo Martínez de Irala’s second governorship of the ii region from 1544 to 1556.

    Oralizando a Escritura: O guarani, de José de Alencar, Posto Novamente em “Romance” Francisco Cláudio Alves Marques Universidade Estadual Paulista – UNESP [email protected] Resumo: Segundo Paul Zumthor, o romance nasce por volta de 1160, atrelado à voz daqueles poetas de praça que traduziam em língua vulgar obras da literatura erudita escritas originalmente em latim. Assim nasce a expressão “mettre en roman”, colocar em romance. Segundo Zumthor (2003), “pôr em romance”, naquele contexto, significava “‘glosar’ em língua vulgar, ‘pôr, clarificando o conteúdo, ao alcance dos ouvintes, fazer compreender, adaptando às circunstâncias’.” Não muito distante dos canterini medievais, os poetas de cordel nordestinos adaptaram textos herdados do romanceiro ibérico para a literatura de folhetos, como a História de Carlos Magno, da Imperatriz Porcina e outras tantas, aproximando-as da realidade de seus leitores e ouvintes. Nesta comunicação pretendo demonstrar que o poeta Klévisson Viana, ao adaptar O guarani, de José de Alencar, para a literatura de cordel, utilizou técnicas semelhantes às empregadas pelos antigos poetas populares, numa espécie de glosa do texto erudito. Abstract: According to Paul Zumthor, the romance rises around 1160, linked to the voice of those square poets who translate works of learned literature originally written in Latin into vulgar language. Thus the expression "mettre en roman", put into romance, rises. According to Zumthor (2003), “to put into romance”, in that context, meant “‘glossing’ in vulgar language, ‘to put, by clarifying the content, within the reach of listeners, to make them understand, adapting to circumstances’.” Not far from the Medieval canterini, twine poets from the Northeast Brazil adapted texts inherited from the Iberian Romance into the literature of pamphlets, such as the History of Charlemagne, History of the Empress Porcina and others, bringing them closer to the reality of their readers and listeners.

The chosen literary texts and musical works in this inquiry differ greatly and come from distinct language traditions. Yet, each reveals parallel narrative anxieties about national origin and racial identity, and attempts to resolve those anxieties. Each example also shows how cultural products such as operas can be used to reshape and narrate the past for ideological purposes. Questions of adaptation—particularly those involving turning the literary genre into the dramatic—affect a work’s presentation and life after the stage lights have dimmed. Who sponsors a work, what means of communication advertise it, and what reviews it receives also matter greatly in how a piece is perceived. ii The works in this study vary from the nineteenth-century “national” novels of Cuba (Cirilo Villaverde’s Cecilia Valdés, 1882) and Brazil (José de Alencar’s O guarani, 1857) to a play from the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes’s Emperor of Haiti, 1936) and their respective adaptations into zarzuela or opera in the 1930s.
