Despite the importance of this call to a more planetary approach to literature, the turn to a world scope often recapitulates problems associated with the nineteenth century emergence of the term “world literature”: local concerns and traditions dissolve into the search for general patterns or persistent dependencies. If these new comparative models tend to separate the local from the construction of literature’s “world,” significant strains of Latin Americanist criticism have also sought to distance the local from literature and the literary, often identifying the latter alternatively with either the collapse of previous emancipatory dreams or a complicity with power and domination. Focusing on several central narrative texts of the Brazilian Clarice ! ii! Lispector and the Argentine Juan José Saer, I argue for a more contested notion of both the literary and the world. Both Lispector’s and Saer’s pairs of narrative texts in this dissertation make it difficult to untangle the literary construction of their respective worlds from local forms of alterity and otherness. Despite the differences between Saer’s attention to an apparently more circumscribed local world in the littoral zone of Santa, Fe, Argentina, and Lispector’s more seemingly abstract flights from place, their writing nonetheless meets in common spaces and experiences that have little to do with either a recognizably “Latin American” aesthetics or the generality of a world model free from contradiction, suffering, and the traces of history. In part one, on Lispector’s A paixão segundo G.H. (1964) and A hora da estrela (1977), and part two on Saer’s El entenado (1983) and El río sin orillas (1990), I explore the different ways that their writing alternatively represents or contains the possibility of altering the world and selves in literature. While the dictatorship period negatively inflects this possibility in both A hora da estrela and El entenado, I argue that the inscription of their literary worlds into local, national, and regional traditions becomes a resource for more subtle connections between the texts and the periods, calling into question the attempts to make literature tell a story of either collapse or hope at end of the last century. ! iii! Introduction: The Alter-Worlds of Lispector and Saer, and the End(s) of Latin American Literature Since the “boom” of Latin American literature in the 1960s, comparative models of world literature and Latin American studies have seemed to move in opposite directions. The current revival of “world literature” as a concept has reasserted the need to think literature on a more planetary scale. We have thus witnessed in recent years an increasing turn to the “world” in literary criticism and philosophy as a response to the current phase of globalization. In the new literary models or approaches, a world space does not appear primarily as an image, imaginary, or representation, but rather as a relational structure, system, or circulation of works beyond their culture or language “of origin.”1 Despite a common emphasis on the asymmetry of its world space, the predominant models of a new world literature nonetheless seem to presuppose a kind of transcendental axis that accounts for literary relevance (or irrelevance) from a place more or less still located in Europe or the U.S. Thus what Pascale Casanova calls the “Greenwich meridian” of

It is problematic when everybody does not speak the same language. As a matter of fact, a word does not have the same meaning for different people or distinct names can be assigned to a particular thing. A recent survey shows different names for some submarine features of the Brazilian continental margin and thus the need to establish a Gazetteer of Brazilian undersea feature names. INTRODUCTION “Quem não se comunica se trumbica” – “You f(ool) yourself quite, when you don’t communicate rite ”, used to say the late Brazilian TV entertainer “Chacrinha”. For a good communication, however, everybody has to speak or understand the same language. But the meaning of a word varies with people and circumstances. Likewise, different names can be assigned to the same fact, object, situation, anything whatsoever. Wrong or inadequate names can cause huge troubles. Some years ago, a drilling location offshore Brazil was designated, according to the rules of the company, with the name of the state it was assumed the territorial waters belonged to. The authorities of the neighbour state argued that the limits of the waters were actually wrong and the well had to be named after their state so that the royalties would be theirs; the location had two names, depending on the officers of each state. The company had to give neutral names to future locations. UNDERSEA FEATURE NAMES The mention of Sao Paulo Plateau can bring two thoughts to the participants in an international oceanography meeting: - Is it the name of the feature in southern Brazilian continental margin known world over and listed as Santos Plateau in the Gazetteer (IHO/IOC, 1997)? (Brazilian geologists are unfamiliar with the latest); - Is it a feature not yet described near the Saint Paul Fracture Zone? (Known in Brazil as São Paulo Fracture Zone).

The focus are the connections between childhood memories and adult personality, regarding the character Virgínia in the novel The chandelier (O lustre), by Clarice Lispector, in order to exemplify the function of affective memory and the universal right to a dignified childhood. The function of affective memories is an important trace in the process of identity formation, which contributes to the development of a legal theory regarding children’s rights. Affection is considered a foundation for dignified life, and literary legal reflections contribute to the rethinking of childhood, in the eyes of Law and social studies. Hegemonic Masculinity, Women and Football in Brazil and Argentina DAVID WOOD University of Sheffield, UK The practice of football by women in Latin America is an integral part of historical patterns around the performance of gender roles and offers insights into how power, both symbolic and political, is subject to ongoing processes of negotiation. A study of women’s involvement as spectators and players in Brazil and Argentina since the early twentieth century sees football emerge as a field in which the construction of gender identities, both personal and national, may be contested. More recently, a growing presence of female players, writers and academics suggests that female agency through football in Latin America is an increasingly realistic goal. Taking the Field Football in Latin America has become firmly established as a subject of study for historians, sociologists, anthropologists and literary scholars, especially in relation to Argentina and Brazil, but the great majority of publications arising from such work focus entirely on the game as played by men. The construction of Black ethnicity in ritual and popular genres of Afro-Brazilian Music. José Jorge de Carvalho University of Brasília The aim of this essay is to present an overview of the charter of Afro-Brazilian identities, emphasizing their correlations with the main Afro-derived musical styles practised today in the country. Given the general scope of the work, I have chosen to sum up this complex mass of data in a few historical models. I am interested, above all, in establishing a contrast between the traditional models of identity of the Brazilian Black population and their musics with recent attempts, carried out by the various Black Movements, and expressed by popular, commercial musicians who formulate protests against that historical condition of poverty and unjustice, forging a new image of Afro- Brazilians, more explicit, both in political and in ideological terms. To focus such a vast ethnographic issue, I shall analyse the way these competing models of identity are shaped by the different song genres and singing styles used by Afro-Brazilians running through four centuries of social and cultural experience. In this connection, this study is also an attempt to explore theoretically the more abstract problems of understanding the efficacy of songs; in other words, how in mythopoetics, meaning and content are revealed in aesthetic symbolic structures which are able to mingle so powerfully verbal with non-verbal modes of communication.
