COBISS.SR-ID 223348492 Julijana Zhabeva Papazova* Independent researcher, Skopje WOMEN’S VOICES IN ALTERNATIVE MUSIC - LISA GERRARD AND ELIZABETH FRASER Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of Lisa Gerrard’s and Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal styles that promoted a new way of singing on the alternative music scene. Instead of the traditional usage of lyrics in the English language as their mother tongue, they use so called ‘glossolalia’, meaning wordless, or substituting language with a melodic, ex ploratory rapture by their vocal range alone in a couple of octaves. The main points of analysis are the relationships between the vocal interpretation and instruments, music form, main melodic themes, rhythm, accomplished with iconography in the relationship between vocal interpretations and stage performances. Key words: alternative music, Lisa Gerrard, Elizabeth Fraser, vocal analysis, glossolalia Introduction The period of the 1980s brought more diverse and at the same time powerful and expressive female vocals with a wide vocal range as band or solo singers in the area of pop, rock and alternative music such as: Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard, Eliza beth Fraser, Siouxsie, Tracy Chapman, Enya and Sinead O’Connor. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the vocal interpretation of two singers, members of two important bands as marked in published music encyclopedias and monographs in the domain of alternative or indie music: Lisa Gerrard as the vocalist of Dead Can Dance and Elizabeth Fraser as the vocalist of Cocteau Twins.

An ordinary servant with a most peculiar task An obvious decision I was too afraid to ask You've given me this bowl of water Vision is much clearer when the dew is on the ground Well just the other morning there was not a drop that I had found I think it's time for me To put this drop on a shelf And keep it there forever Right beside my former self Now my face is on the floor and I'm asking you once more To show me a sign so I'll know that it's divine My bowl that is full of water Don't let your anger burn against me, answer my request Does she think I'm out of line here cause I've put you to the test? Miracles they happen every day I think it's time for me To put this drop on a shelf And keep it there forever Right beside my former self.

Why am I gushing at advertisers you wonder? Well you see one of the main ongoing problems we have here at The VJ is that of outstanding ‘bad debt’. Basically, this has occurred when we have run ads for individuals/businesses who haven’t paid up for that service. While we have been writing it off incrementally each month it’s just not fair and it is far too big of a financial burden for a community owned and run publi- cation to bear. We simply cannot afford to be owed thousands of dollars in unpaid advertising dollars and we aren’t really in a position to be continually chasing money.

J Mark Percival - Making music radio: the record industry and popular music production in the UK i ABSTRACT Music radio is the most listened to form of radio, and one of the least researched by academic ethnographers. This research project addresses industry structure and agency in an investigation into the relationship between music radio and the record industry in the UK, how that relationship works to produce music radio and to shape the production of popular music. The underlying context for this research is Peterson's production of culture perspective. The research is in three parts: a model of music radio production and consumption, an ethnographic investigation focusing on music radio programmers and record industry pluggers, and an ethnographic investigation into the use of specialist music radio programming by alternative pop and rock artists in Glasgow, Scotland. The research has four main conclusions: music radio continues to be central to the record industry's promotional strategy for new commercial recordings; music radio is increasing able to mediate the production practices of the popular music industry; that mediation is focused through the social relationship between music radio programmers and record industry pluggers; cultural practices of musicians are developed and mediated by consumption of specialist music radio, as they become part of specialist music radio.

  • Chorus by Lush | Box Set Review
Chorus by Lush | Box Set Review thelineofbestfit.com /reviews/albums/lushs-chorus-anthology-is-a-lexicon-of-love/ Ed Nash Chorus is the perfect title for an anthology of Lush’s relentlessly infectious songs. Their studio albums, 1992s Spooky, 1994s Split and 1996s Lovelife are topped and tailed by here two compilations, Gala and Topolino, as well as everything else they recorded. A mammoth 105 tracks are spread over five lovingly packaged discs. Prior to their very welcome live return next year - their first shows since the tragic passing of drummer Chris Acland twenty years ago - Chorus is timely reminder of how wonderful Lush were. Whether pedaling the space rock which saw them lumped in with Shoegaze initially or their spikier later material, the theme of love runs consistently through their songs. They wrote about it quite brilliantly, be that the rancour of “Bitter” or the melancholy of “Nothing Natural.” Calling themselves Lush proved to be a double edged sword. On one hand, it fitted with the beauty of their initially dreamy, gauzy songs. They didn’t look like your typical indie band either - Acland and bassist Phil King were such a pair of handsome devils they could have been Gap models. However the flipside to the name was their joy of enjoying a beer and letting their hair down, which unfairly saw singing guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson being written about in gossip columns almost as much as they were for their music. For all their down to earthness (Berenyi was hilariously dismissive about her treatment at the hands of male musicians in the recent Girl In A Band documentary), Lush were incredibly serious about the music they made, which shines through in Chorus.
