COBISS.SR-ID 223348492 Julijana Zhabeva Papazova* Independent researcher, Skopje WOMEN’S VOICES IN ALTERNATIVE MUSIC - LISA GERRARD AND ELIZABETH FRASER Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of Lisa Gerrard’s and Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal styles that promoted a new way of singing on the alternative music scene. Instead of the traditional usage of lyrics in the English language as their mother tongue, they use so called ‘glossolalia’, meaning wordless, or substituting language with a melodic, ex ploratory rapture by their vocal range alone in a couple of octaves. The main points of analysis are the relationships between the vocal interpretation and instruments, music form, main melodic themes, rhythm, accomplished with iconography in the relationship between vocal interpretations and stage performances. Key words: alternative music, Lisa Gerrard, Elizabeth Fraser, vocal analysis, glossolalia Introduction The period of the 1980s brought more diverse and at the same time powerful and expressive female vocals with a wide vocal range as band or solo singers in the area of pop, rock and alternative music such as: Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard, Eliza beth Fraser, Siouxsie, Tracy Chapman, Enya and Sinead O’Connor. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the vocal interpretation of two singers, members of two important bands as marked in published music encyclopedias and monographs in the domain of alternative or indie music: Lisa Gerrard as the vocalist of Dead Can Dance and Elizabeth Fraser as the vocalist of Cocteau Twins.

J Mark Percival - Making music radio: the record industry and popular music production in the UK i ABSTRACT Music radio is the most listened to form of radio, and one of the least researched by academic ethnographers. This research project addresses industry structure and agency in an investigation into the relationship between music radio and the record industry in the UK, how that relationship works to produce music radio and to shape the production of popular music. The underlying context for this research is Peterson's production of culture perspective. The research is in three parts: a model of music radio production and consumption, an ethnographic investigation focusing on music radio programmers and record industry pluggers, and an ethnographic investigation into the use of specialist music radio programming by alternative pop and rock artists in Glasgow, Scotland. The research has four main conclusions: music radio continues to be central to the record industry's promotional strategy for new commercial recordings; music radio is increasing able to mediate the production practices of the popular music industry; that mediation is focused through the social relationship between music radio programmers and record industry pluggers; cultural practices of musicians are developed and mediated by consumption of specialist music radio, as they become part of specialist music radio.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

  • Simon Raymonde on Perseverance
December 4, 2017 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 3417 words. Tags: Music, Process, Independence, Anxiety, Beginnings. Simon Raymonde on perseverance A lot of people know you from your work running Bella Union, but you were also a member of the Cocteau Twins. When your early career is defined by having been part of this iconic band, does that loom like a specter over whatever you do later? That’s an interesting thing. I am generally a relatively positive thinker, and whilst I was very conscious that I didn’t want to just jump from this amazing band into another band, I often asked myself why I didn’t want to do that. I think it was because I knew how special Cocteau Twins was, and I knew that a singer like Elizabeth Fraser is literally one in a million, if not a billion. I was also conscious that anything that I did in the future would inevitably be compared to that band. If I have a band with a female singer, the very first thing anyone is going to think about or mention is the fact that it’s not Elizabeth or that I was in the Cocteau Twins. So it is a specter, in a way. It’s a blessing and a curse. We had started the label just prior to the band breaking up, so luckily there was this thing in existence that I could throw myself into. I could temporarily ignore the fact that I was a musician for a minute and pretend that I was only doing this label thing.
