D. Concordia University, 2020 Once a peripheral phenomenon on the Web, sexcam platforms have been gaining social and eco- nomic importance, attracting millions of visitors every day. Crucial to this popularity is the tech- nical and economic model that some of those sites use. Sexcam platforms combine the practices of labor and user-generated platforms. As platforms, they mediate between users and providers, becoming the feld where those operations occur. Sexcam platforms, however, are more than inter- mediaries, and their structures incorporate and reproduce discriminatory conventions. -

Good Vibrations: Charting the Dominant and Emergent Discursive Regimes of Sex Toys Abstract Sex toys promote a new consumptive ethos whose significance may be adequately outlined by attending to the institutional implications of this product category’s consumption. By drawing on Foucault’s theory of sexuality and the technologies of the self that materialize with the aid of discursive formations about sexuality, as well as on relevant sociological and ethnographic insights, I undertake a qualitative content analysis on a corpus of 100 sex toys’ product reviews from popular magazines and web sites in order to identify how the discourse about sex toys is articulated in terms of three dominant categories of sexual scripts (Simon & Gagnon, 2007), viz. cultural scenarios, interpersonal scripts and intrapsychic scripts. -

More Than A Helping Hand: Male Masturbatory Aids and the Construction of Heterosexual Masculinity A Master’s Thesis for the Degree of Master of Arts (120 credits) in Visual Culture Abigail Phillips Division of Art History and Visual Studies Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences Lund University KOVM12, Master Thesis, 30 credits Supervisor(s): Max Liljefors Spring semester 2018 Acknowledgements I would like to thank those who have helped and supported me during the writing of this Masters thesis. First, I would like to thank Max Liljefors, my supervisor, who dealt with endless questions about formatting, and my slightly odd, British sense of humour when giving me his expert guidance and support. Secondly, to my fellow MA Visual Culture thesis writers; thank you for being an outlet for frustrations, sharing your advice and kinds words. Also, to my housemates, Lewis, Melissa and Tim, who’ve had to deal with my piles of books, strange notes and inability to think of anything but sex toys for nearly six months; thank you for always finding time to talk to me about this project over a beer. I’d also like to thank my parents, who, throughout my entire time at Lund University, have supported me emotionally and financially, and have given me this opportunity, always pushed me forward, and offered unwavering belief in me and my abilities. And finally, to David Murphy, my partner. Who, while completing his own academic studies, has always found time to read my work, critique it, praise it, edit it and push me forward. Who’s dealt with numerous breakdowns, threats to just pack it all in, and sleepless nights. -

2019 Calendar 1994–2019 • 25 YEARS OF ENTRENUE Where was I in 1994? Wow! 25 years! How the HECK did that happen? As the photo of me on this page shows, I was graduating that May from the University of Arizona. This WELCOME is one of the last pictures that I have of my real parents and I in a group shot. The two people who made me who I am by my side. I love it…and I love them. So grateful… In October of ‘94, I began my first job in the Macy’s buying offices in San Francisco where I eventually helped them rebuild the Northridge store after a devastating earthquake. I was paying just over a dollar per gallon for gas and I was just hearing about this thing called “the internet.” I was listening to Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and, my NJ favorites, Bon Jovi. One of my favorite movies of all time, The Lion King, was released along with Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump. Fun Joe Casella fact: I saw Elton John in concert that year since he had the theme song to The Lion King. It was the only song that I knew that evening as he played all B-sides and no hits. Really? Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, this was the founding year of a small company named Entrenue…and Amazon, LOL… It was 25 years ago in 1994 that Harry and Karen had a vision to provide a book source on sexuality and relationship enhancement to adult stores. From that vision, Entrenue was born on a bookshelf in their bedroom…to the basement… to the garage…and eventually a warehouse in Redmond, WA. -

Telepresence and the Ethics of Digital Cheating
EME 12 (1+2) pp. 7–26 Intellect Limited 2013 Explorations in Media Ecology Volume 12 Numbers 1 & 2 © 2013 Intellect Ltd Article. English language. doi: 10.1386/eme.12.1-2.7_1 Brett Lunceford Independent Scholar Telepresence and the ethics of digital cheating Abstract Keywords This article considers the ethics of sexual telepresence by tracing the history of mechan- cybersex ical and digital sex and exploring the possibilities facilitated by current and emerging digital telepresence technology. My aim is to consider how people have used technology to engage in new ethics forms of sexual expression in order to more clearly delineate exactly what consti- infidelity tutes cheating and the ethical lines surrounding such behaviours. As with non-digital intimacy forms of intimacy, it seems clear that there is a range of behaviours that invite differ- sexuality ent people to draw the lines in different places, ranging from flirtation to erotic talk, to physical contact. But the goal of this article is not merely to consider where the lines may lie, but rather to examine how the medium in which the interaction takes place invites individuals to make particular moral judgments concerning what lines should exist at all concerning both physical and emotional intimacy. Humans have likely been using tools to achieve sexual pleasure for as long as humans have used tools. Aside from some religious imperatives against masturbation, such actions are seemingly well within the realm of the ethical, especially in regard to whether such actions constitute cheating on one’s lover. However, the tools that we have crafted for sexual purposes have, like all tools, evolved considerably from the crude dildos and, of course, hands of times past. -
Sexual Evolution Social Implications of Teledildonic Adoption
Sexual Evolution Social implications of teledildonic adoption. By Aaron Siegel Phil 110 San Jose State University 11-17-05 A man in California hugs his girlfriend who is currently in Finland. They can feel the warmth from each others bodies, the squeeze of arms wrapped around them, and the pulse of each others heart beats. The technology that makes this remote physical contact available is called teledildonics, and while this particular case may not be a reality as of yet, more primitive implementations have already begun to make their way into our culture. As we begin to adopt these new technologies of physical telepresence, they will augment every opportunity for remote interaction currently in use and will amplify both the positive and negative aspects. Teledildonics was originally a word coined by Ted Nelson, creator of the concept of hypertext. It’s a combina- tion of dildonics, which can be considered as a general self-operated or machine automated electronic haptic pleasure device, and telepresence, which is a sufficient augmentation of experience to give a sensation of ones immediate presence shared across electronic and regional boundaries. When these two experiences are com- bined, they create the unique effect of cybernetics. The key aspect to teledildonics power is its ability to communicate. Like Howard Rheingold said in his 99 book Virtual Reality, “The first fully functional Teledildonics system will be a communication device, not a sex machine. You probably will not use erotic telepresence technology in order to have sexual experiences with machines. Thirty years from now, when portable telediddlers become ubiquitous, most people will use them to have sexual experiences with other people, at a distance, in combinations and con- figurations undreamed of by pre-cybernetic voluptuaries.” All the major implications of social change will occur because of the evolutionary step in communication, and will have relatively less to do with advancements in tactile stimulation mechanisms. -
