Matthew 27:32-56 V. 46 is the sticky point of the crucifixion. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Many teach this as God turning his back on and pouring out his wrath on him. The text says nothing about God's wrath. Some cf. :39 to say that Jesus wanted the cup of wrath (does not mention wrath) to pass from him, but in :20-28 Jesus tells James and John they will drink the cup he is about to drink.

To be clear, we most certainly believe that we have been rescued from the wrath of God through faith in Jesus. For it to be true that God turned from Jesus and poured his wrath on him, we would have to throw out much of scripture (see last week's sermon).

The actual answer to this sticky verse is that everything Jesus did was to fulfill scripture, even his death on the cross.

Psalm 22:1-24 Matthew 27:46 = :1 this is shorthand for this Psalm. Jesus is saying, "Think of this Psalm as I am on the cross."

A Jewish person at the foot of the cross would think of Psalm 22 when Jesus says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

1. Psalm 22:7 = Matthew 27:38-40 people mock and wag their heads at Jesus on the cross 2. Psalm 22:8 = Matthew 27:43 they say "Let God rescue him"

The people around the cross aren't quoting the psalm on purpose. But scripture was fulfilled in them and Jesus points it out in v. 46 Acts 26:22 Paul declares that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law and the prophets

3. Psalm 22:18 = Matthew 27:35 they divide up his clothes by lot 4. Psalm 22:14 = :31-34 Jesus' side is pierced and water and blood flow out 5. Psalm 22:22-23 = Hebrews 2:9-13 Jesus, in becoming human and suffering on the cross proclaims the name of God to Israel

Psalm 22 is not the only scripture fulfilled by Jesus' death:

Psalm 69:6-12 = John 2:13-22

1. Jesus is angered by the money lenders and his disciples think of 2. As proof that he is the Messiah, Jesus says, destroy this temple (body) and I will rebuild it in 3 days. Matthew 27:40

Jesus did everything he did in the way he did it because scripture declared that he would. Every single thing Jesus did, he declares, was in obedience to the Father!

John 19:23-30 = Psalm 69:21 the last thing Jesus does before he dies is say, "I'm thirsty," and his motivation was to fulfill scripture.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Examples:

Isaiah 53:1 = John 12:27-41 the people do not believe :4 = :14-17 he took our weakness and bore our diseases Isaiah 53:9 = :27-28 he was numbered with sinners

Luke 23:44-46

1. Psalm 31:1-5 Jesus commits his spirit to God, showing where his confidence lies 2. Hebrews 10:19-22 the veil separated everyone from the presence of God (except for the high priest once a year). Now, all may enter into the presence of God because the veil (Jesus' flesh) was torn.

1 From birth to death to resurrection, Jesus fulfilled scripture. For a first century Jew, this is proof enough to show Jesus as the Messiah. In Acts, Paul and Peter argued from the scripture (Old Testament) that Jesus is the Messiah.

As we have said before, because Jesus fulfilled all of scripture in his birth, life, death, and resurrection, everything scripture declares about Jesus' return will be fulfilled.
