MATTHEW 27; August 16; The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ ANALYSIS: 1. What happened to the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received for betraying Jesus? _____________________________________________________________ 2. Before Jesus was led to crucifixion, what punishments did He bear for us? _____________________________________________________________________________ 4. During the hours Jesus' body was on the cross, what supernatural signs happened? _____________________________________________________________ 5. Who buried Jesus body, and who wanted the tomb sealed? _________________________________________________________________________________ THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Think of the unusual and supernatural signs the centurion witnessed at Jesus' crucifixion which caused him to proclaim,”Truly this was the Son of God.” He had watched Jesus submit to crucifixion “as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth” (Is 53:7). He had experienced the darkness from noon to 3 in the afternoon. He had heard Jesus cry, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” He had felt he earthquake and watched the rocks crack. The record says he feared greatly, and rightly so, for he had “by wicked hands have crucified and slain” the Lord of Glory (Acts 2:23). “Jesus paid it all” for every one of his elect. We have no fear of eternal judgment for sins. Let us fear for failing to serve him with zeal in love and faithfulness. HELP: 1. Judas cast the silver down in the temple before he hanged himself. The chief priests then bought the potter's field with it for a burial place for strangers (vs 5-7). -

Matthew 27:32 (see Mark 15:21) As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carr y his cross. Jesus said once: ‘If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me’(Matthew 16:24). Simon was reluctant but it seems that he became a disciple, for Paul, in his letter to the Christian community in Rome, writes: ‘Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; and greet his mother – a mother to me also.’ The gratitude and love shown him by Jesus must have changed his heart so that he came to see his task as a privilege. If Jesus needed someone to help him carry his cross, we should not be surprised if we find it too hard to carry our cross alone. -

Jesus is marching toward the cross, approaching the pentacle of His life and reason why He came to earth. Many Old Testament prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah predicted hundred of years previously that the Son of David, the Messiah would come to be offered as the final sacrifice for the sins of man and He did. Jesus spent 37 years on this earth living, serving and discipling His followers. Now, it was time to finish His task of drawing all mankind to God the Father through His death on a Roman cross. Man needed a way back to relationship with God. His sin had deposited a huge chasm between himself and God the Father, so the Lord in His desire to continue a relationship with you and I made a way to be forgiven through the death of His only Son. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, communication with Him was restored once again. As we walk through these verses in Matthew Ch.27 we will relive the scourging, beating and the crucifixion of Jesus. -

Yates IMOTHY POLK HAS NOTED, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as T the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet.2 In fact the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be for- mulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this article is to explore how intertextual con- nections to other portions of the Bible inform a deeper understand- ing of the portrayal of Jeremiah the prophet and his theological significance in the book of Jeremiah. -

THE BEATITUDES AND WOES OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE SLOW SAVOURING OF SERIOUS DISCIPLES by Father Joseph R. Jacobson To the Chinese Christians of our own time who along with survivors of the gulag and the jihad are giving the whole Church a fresh vision of what it means to be called “disciples of Jesus” INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS The Beatitudes and Woes of Jesus Christ are stark. Much of our teaching and preaching based on them is not. Jesus sets them out as ground rules for His disciples. He places them at the very beginning of His special instructions to them, whereas entire theological systems have treated them as an afterthought and relegated them to the end. The problem is that in Jesus’ instructions the Beatitudes are descriptive, not prescriptive. That is, they tell us what discipleship is, not what it ought to be. They spell out the everyday norms of discipleship, not its far off ideals, the bottom line, not the distant goal. This makes us most uncomfortable because, fitting us so poorly they call into question our very right to claim to be disciples of Jesus at all. There can be no question that they are addressed specifically to Jesus’ disciples, both the Beatitudes and the Woes. Matthew makes that plain in his way (Matthew 5:1-2) and Luke makes it plain in his way (Luke 6:20). The fact that Jesus singles them out from the crowds which are all around them, pressing in on them with their own expectations and demands, simply underscores the urgency Jesus felt to clarify what He was expecting of them by way of sheer contrast. -

The Death of Jesus Matthew 27:27-56 June 9th, 2019 Big idea: Jesus was mocked, beaten, and crucified by men and he was temporarily separated from His Father to save us. Intro In 1914 Ernest Shackelton set out with a group of men to be the first to cross the continent of Antarctica. Others had already beaten him to the south pole so he needed a new goal. The plan was to take his stout ship, the Endurance, specially designed for an icy voyage with a hull up to 12” thick, to the coast of Antarctica, disembark with a small group of men to cross the continent, while the rest of the crew remained on the boat and met them on the other side. It never happened. What did happen was one of the most amazing stories of human endurance. But if you read about the journey, at every stage you think, “This can’t get any worse.” And then it does. On the journey was a brilliant and committed photographer from New Zealand whose job was to capture pictures that could be sold in a book after the journey to recoup the costs of the trip. They left the South Georgia island in December (the arctic summer) but before they reached the continent their boat was frozen fast in an immovable ice-flow by the end of January. Realizing that they would need to spend the winter, they made the best of it and settled in to a routine of life on a boat frozen in ice in the arctic winter.
