Matthew 27:1-32 Recap of Judas' betrayal of Christ. Satan had put it into his heart and even possessed him. Remorse on his part does not mean that he believed was the Christ.

Zechariah 11:1-17 The Lord says, "Look at the price at which I was valued." Judas is given 30 pieces of silver to betray Christ.

1. In Matthew, This fulfills the prophesy of Zechariah, even though it says 2. "On that day" is mentioned throughout Zechariah - not one specific day. Different references to different times: Death, resurrection, return. 3. Who are the three shepherds in ? We don't know. Cf. Ezekiel 34 & Jeremiah 23, Jeremiah 2:8, 10:21, & 12:10 - God removes people who were responsible for teaching the things of God and they aren't doing it. Christ, the true shepherd, comes and does the same and is then valued at 30 pieces of silver. 4. Why does Matthew say Jeremiah when it is quoting Zechariah? Not referencing when Jeremiah buys his uncle's land (). Not just a mistake. Nothing tells us that Jeremiah wrote the last 4 chapters of Zechariah. Jeremiah is not the title of the Prophets. We don't know why Matthew said Jeremiah. It doesn't matter, anyway. The point is to show that this fulfills scripture.

Matthew 27:17 Jesus was a common name. Pilate was only identifying which Jesus he was talking about. This does not mean that he actually believed Jesus is the Christ.

Matthew 27:11-26 :28-19:15 v. 31-they are admitting that he had done nothing violating the law which warrants death Matthew 27:25 - irony. Christians would mean something completely different in this statement. The Jews mean: we will take the guilt. Christians mean: let his blood remove our guilt. Cf. Acts 5:21-32; 1 John 1:5-7; Revelation 1:4-6 - we sing songs about the blood of Jesus because it is what has brought us life and freedom, so let us cry out, "His blood be on us and on our children!"

Matthew 27:27-32 :26-31 - if they are willing to kill the one who is doing miraculous signs and wonders when things are good, what might they do when things are bad? Cf. Deuteronomy 32 - God to Moses: these people have done wicked things; when you die, they will get worse.

You want to know why people are wicked? When the tree was green, God was rejected; now the tree is dry.

Main Points 1. Everything about the life and death of Jesus was according to the proclaimed word of God through the prophets. All of scripture was written so we can know that Jesus is God. Remember last week: we can know Jesus is coming back. 2. "His blood be on us and on our children!" Think of the difference between the wicked saying these words and the redeemed saying these words. Don't be surprised that the world sees Christ differently than we do. The world has always mocked Christ. 3. We should not be surprised at how the world behaves. When God was here, they murdered him. Let that stir us up to pray for this lost and dying world.
