At the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, in the majestic Vatican Basilica, Our immediate Predecessor of deathless memory, Pius XI, duly consecrated and raised to the fullness of the priesthood, as you well know, "the flowers and . latest buds of the Chinese episcopate."[1] 2. On that solemn occasion he added these words: "You have come, Venerable Brethren, to visit Peter, and you have received from him the shepherd's staff, with which to undertake your apostolic journeys and to gather together your sheep. It is Peter who with great love has embraced you who are in great part Our hope for the spread of the truth of the Gospel among your people."[2] 3. The memory of that allocution comes to Our mind today, Venerable Brethren and dear children, as the Catholic Church in your fatherland is experiencing great suffering and loss. But the hope of our great Predecessor was not in vain, nor did it prove without effect, for new bands of shepherds and heralds of the Gospel have been joined to the first group of bishops whom Peter, living in his Successor, sent to feed those chosen flocks of the Lord. 4. New works and religious undertakings prospered among you despite many obstacles.

26 On Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, Rome beatified both Pope Pius IX and Pope John XXIII, along with Tommaso Reggio, Guillaume-Joseph Chaminade, and Columba Marmion. At the start of his homily, the Pope told the 100,000 faithful present that, in beatifying her children, “the Church does not celebrate particular historical achievements they may have accomplished, rather it identifies them as examples to be imitated and venerated for their virtues....” John XXIII, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, elected Pope in 1958, “impressed the world with his affability through which shone the goodness of his soul.... It is well known that John XXIII profoundly venerated Pius IX and wished for his beatification.” He convoked Vatican Council II, “with which he opened a new page in the history of the Church: Christians felt themselves called to announce the Gospel with renewed courage Was the “Good Pope” and greater attention to the ‘signs’ of the times.” THE ANGELUS September 2000 a Good Pope? Rev. Fr. michel simoulin 27 he list of books, studies, and articles extolling the “goodness” of Pope John XXIII is too long to be made here. The culminating point of this eulogizing–and it seems definitive–was the promulgation of the decree (Dec. 29, 1989) Tconcerning the “heroic” virtues of the Servant of God, Pope John XXIII. This would seem to put an end to all discussion. However, other studies or articles published pointing out the defects or weaknesses of the same Pope cannot be overlooked.1 The very “address of homage” directed to Pope John Paul II by the Prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints (Dec.

  • Catholic Social Teaching Edited by Gerard V
Cambridge University Press 978-1-316-51360-6 — Catholic Social Teaching Edited by Gerard V. Bradley , E. Christian Brugger Frontmatter More Information catholic social teaching Catholic Social Teaching (CST) refers to the corpus of authoritative ecclesiastical teaching, usually in the form of papal encyclicals, on social matters, beginning with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (1891) and running through Pope Francis. CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. The volume’s appeal is not limited to Catholics, or even just to those who embrace, or who are seriously interested in, Christianity. Its appeal is to any scholar interested in the history or content of modern CST. Gerard V. Bradley is Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. He has been a Visiting Professor of Politics at Princeton University, a Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and is currently a Senior Fellow of the Witherspoon Institute. At Notre Dame he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Jurisprudence and serves as Co-Director of the Natural Law Institute. E. Christian Brugger is Professor of Moral Theology at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. He is author of Capital Punishment and Roman Catholic Moral Tradition, 2nd ed.

* * * I. On the Nature of a Consecration Generally speaking, a consecration means a dedication of persons or things to the divine cult.

PALABRAS CLAVE Iglesia; Papado; Paz; Guerra Fría; Conflicto; Constructivismo ABSTRACT This academic work consists in a study about the configuration of a new concept of Peace, which will be able to reach stability and real coexistence to the world. For that reason, we will study the Catholic Church’s performance as an international actor in the scenario of the Cold War to see how this new vision of peace was created, while the world was ruled by uncertainty and tension. Following the constructivist theory, the efforts made by the representatives of the Catholic Church (Popes: Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II) will be analysed, to see how they created a new Peace’s conception that could overcome the ideas that had put to the world in a spiral of hatred and violence.

  • Catholic Doctrine and Teaching Regarding Mary
Catholic Doctrine and Teaching Regarding Mary Mariology is the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and of her role in Salvation History. Mary is viewed by Catholics as having a unique dignity among saints. Due to her maternal relationship to Christ and to the fact that she was conceived without original sin, Catholics believe Mary is entitled to Hyperdulia, that is an extraordinary level of veneration, as opposed to Dulia, a Greek term for the honor given to other saints. The field of Mariology includes dogmatic and theological studies of Mary, and also the study of the veneration of Mary in popular piety, including prayer, art, liturgy, hymns, shrines, and other devotions. The tradition of devotions associated with Catholic devotion to Mary are so extensive they require many more pages to expound. This page covers only the following topics as they relate to the Blessed Virgin Mary: 1) Dogmatic and Doctrinal teachings 2) Teachings and Writings of Saints 3) Pronouncements of Popes and Councils Dogmatic Teachings Concerning Mary There are four Marian teachings that have defined as De Fide Definita doctrines, or solemnly pronounced dogmas of the Faith. The Catholic Church teaches many truths about Mary, derived from the scriptures and traditions of the early Church, but only these four doctrines are considered dogmatic teaching. Dogma Magisterial Teaching / Authority Mary is Mother of Jesus who is truly God and Man in one person. — Mother of God Council of Ephesus (431) At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed into heavenly glory. — Assumption into Heaven Pope Pius XII (1950) Mary was preserved immaculate from Original Sin at her conception.

  • Great Excommunicator (2002) by Rev
The Great Excommunicator (2002) by Rev. Anthony Cekada Bp. Kelly’s communion rules divide families and violate canon law. YOUNG TRADITIONAL Catholics often worry about finding the right potential spouse — will I find a mate with whom I can share and practice my faith? This worry is often compounded because of the divisions that exist among various traditional Catholic groups, a situation produced by the defection of the hierarchy at Vatican II, who otherwise would now be keeping order among faithful Catho- lics. In Cincinnati where I now work, this difficulty is particular- ly acute due to the presence of a parish operated by Bishop Clar- ence Kelly’s Society of St. Pius V (SSPV) and his Daughters of Mary. His organization’s policy is to refuse Holy Communion to people who assist at my Mass, and otherwise treat them as non- Catholics. Often there is a nasty public scene at their church when an SSPV priest grills a suspect communicant at the rail, and then passes him by if he gets the wrong answers. (The most recent victim: a 90-year-old Cincinnati granny, visiting an SSPV church in Cleveland.) The local SSPV school principal even exacts a written oath from parents that they and their children will not receive sacra- ments at my church. You can imagine the difficulties that ensue, then, when a young man from the SSPV parish, say, takes an interest in a young lady from mine, and marriage looms. The SSPV clergy pressure the young man and his family to get the young woman to “convert” — formally renounce any connection with me and agree to raise any children in “their” church.
