Karl Rahner's Work on the Assumption of Mary Into Heaven
Karl Rahner’s Work on the Assumption of Mary into Heaven By Mark F. Fischer, St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo [Mark F. Fischer is Professor of Theology at St. John’s Seminary, the seminary of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Hans-Georg Gadamer and the Catholic Theology of Tradition (Berkeley: Graduate Theological Union, 1985). In 2005 he published The Foundations of Karl Rahner, a paraphrase of Rahner’s Foundations of Catholic Faith.] Abstract Karl Rahner completed his Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis in 1951 but did not receive permission to publish it from his Jesuit superiors. The work was only published in 2004, twenty years after Rahner’s death. This essay examines his treatise on the Assumption of Mary and the objections of the censors. The relation between the treatise and Rahner’s publication of 1947, “On the Theology of Death,” receives special attention. The shorter work was appended to the Marian treatise as an “excursus” but laid the foundation for the later work. Rahner reinterpreted the dogma of the Assumption in light of the resurrection of the dead, which the assumption of Mary’s body and soul into heaven anticipates. Among Rahner’s many speculative comments, this essay focuses on three. First, at the final resurrection, the soul (separated at death from the body) re-creates a new and glorified body as its fulfillment and perfection. Second, the glorified body expresses a metaphysical holiness that matures between the moment of death and the final judgment. And third, the resurrection of the body completes the transformation of the world as a new heaven and a new earth that began with the Incarnation. -
CONDEMNATION of COMMUNISM in PONTIFICAL MAGISTERIUM Since Pius IX Till Paul VI
CONDEMNATION OF COMMUNISM IN PONTIFICAL MAGISTERIUM since Pius IX till Paul VI Petru CIOBANU Abstract: The present article, based on several magisterial documents, illus- trates the approach of Roman Pontiffs, beginning with Pius IX and ending with Paul VI, with regard to what used to be called „red plague”, i.e. communism. The article analyses one by one various encyclical letters, apostolic letters, speeches and radio messages in which Roman Pontiffs condemned socialist theories, either explicitly or implicitly. Keywords: Magisterium, Pope, communism, socialism, marxism, Christianity, encyclical letter, apostolic letter, collectivism, atheism, materialism. Introduction And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Rev 12,3-4.13.17). These words, written over 2.000 years ago, didn’t lose their value along time, since then and till now, reflecting the destiny of Christian Church and Christians – „those who guard the God words and have the Jesus tes- timony” – in the world, where appear so many „dragons” that have the aim to persecute Jesus Christ followers. -
Ad Apostolorum Principis
AD APOSTOLORUM PRINCIPIS ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XII ON COMMUNISM AND THE CHURCH IN CHINA TO OUR VENERABLE BRETHREN AND BELOVED CHILDREN, THE ARCHBISHOPS, BISHIOPS, OTHER LOCAL ORDINARIES AND CLERGY AND PEOPLE OF CHINA IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE June 29, 1958 Venerable Brethren and Beloved Children, Greetings and Apostolic Benediction. At the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, in the majestic Vatican Basilica, Our immediate Predecessor of deathless memory, Pius XI, duly consecrated and raised to the fullness of the priesthood, as you well know, "the flowers and . latest buds of the Chinese episcopate."[1] 2. On that solemn occasion he added these words: "You have come, Venerable Brethren, to visit Peter, and you have received from him the shepherd's staff, with which to undertake your apostolic journeys and to gather together your sheep. It is Peter who with great love has embraced you who are in great part Our hope for the spread of the truth of the Gospel among your people."[2] 3. The memory of that allocution comes to Our mind today, Venerable Brethren and dear children, as the Catholic Church in your fatherland is experiencing great suffering and loss. But the hope of our great Predecessor was not in vain, nor did it prove without effect, for new bands of shepherds and heralds of the Gospel have been joined to the first group of bishops whom Peter, living in his Successor, sent to feed those chosen flocks of the Lord. 4. New works and religious undertakings prospered among you despite many obstacles. -
The Holy See
The Holy See ANNI SACRI ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XII ON A PROGRAM FOR COMBATTING ATHEISTIC PROPAGANDA THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TO THE VENERABLE BRETHREN THE PATRIARCHS, PRIMATES, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHIOPS, AND OTHER ORDINARIES IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE The Holy Year, which is in the course of passing, has already furnished Us with more than one reason for joy and consolation. To Rome, whence the light of the Gospel teaching radiates since the origins of the Church, multitudes of the faithful have streamed from all parts of the world. They have come to the See of Peter not only to redeem their own faults, but also to expiate the sins of the world and implore the return of society to God, from Whom alone can come true peace of heart, civil concord and the well-being of nations. 2. And We know that these first groups of pilgrims form the vanguard of those who will come more frequently and in greater numbers during the favorable season. Therefore, the hope is warranted that from this still more salutary and abundant fruits will be harvested. Nevertheless, if these sights have given Us gentle comfort, reasons are not lacking for the anxiety and anguish which grieve Our paternal heart. And in the first place, although war has almost everywhere ceased, nevertheless, the longed-for peace has not come - a stable and solid peace which might happily solve the many and ever-increasing reasons for discord. Many nations are still opposed to each other; and as confidence lessens an armaments race begins, leaving the hearts of all overcome by fear and trepidation. -
Ad Caeli Reginam
Ad Caeli Reginam accepted so that with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, of October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary.[2] 2 Basic teachings According to Catholic teaching Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her divine motherhood of Je- sus Christ, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of salvation. Mary was cho- sen as Mother of Christ in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race: “As Christ, the new Adam must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam.”[3] 3 Context The Church has always taught that Mary is far above all other creatures in dignity, and after her Son possesses pri- macy over all. Germanus of Constantinople says: “Your honor and dignity surpass the whole of creation; your Botticelli, the coronation of the Virgin greatness places you above the angels.” And St. John Damascene goes so far as to say: “Limitless is the dif- Ad Caeli Reginam is an encyclical of Pope Pius XII, ference between God’s servants and His Mother.” [4] given at Rome, from St. Peter’s Basilica, on the feast of Pius XII quotes his predecessors: Pope Pius IX, “With a the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the eleventh heart that is truly a mother’s,” does she approach the prob- day of October, 1954, in the sixteenth year of his Pon- lem of our salvation, and is solicitous for the whole hu- tificate. -

26 On Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, Rome beatified both Pope Pius IX and Pope John XXIII, along with Tommaso Reggio, Guillaume-Joseph Chaminade, and Columba Marmion. At the start of his homily, the Pope told the 100,000 faithful present that, in beatifying her children, “the Church does not celebrate particular historical achievements they may have accomplished, rather it identifies them as examples to be imitated and venerated for their virtues....” John XXIII, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, elected Pope in 1958, “impressed the world with his affability through which shone the goodness of his soul.... It is well known that John XXIII profoundly venerated Pius IX and wished for his beatification.” He convoked Vatican Council II, “with which he opened a new page in the history of the Church: Christians felt themselves called to announce the Gospel with renewed courage Was the “Good Pope” and greater attention to the ‘signs’ of the times.” THE ANGELUS September 2000 a Good Pope? Rev. Fr. michel simoulin 27 he list of books, studies, and articles extolling the “goodness” of Pope John XXIII is too long to be made here. The culminating point of this eulogizing–and it seems definitive–was the promulgation of the decree (Dec. 29, 1989) Tconcerning the “heroic” virtues of the Servant of God, Pope John XXIII. This would seem to put an end to all discussion. However, other studies or articles published pointing out the defects or weaknesses of the same Pope cannot be overlooked.1 The very “address of homage” directed to Pope John Paul II by the Prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints (Dec. -
