Introduction In the Surah entitled “The Table Spread” in the Quran, Mohammed, the prophet of Islam, proclaimed a long revelation from God, and in a part that spoke of the role of Mary and teachings of Jesus, the following was mentioned: “And behold! Allah will say: ‘O Jesus the son of Mary! Did you say to men, ‘worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah’?’” (Sura 5:116).1 It is of note here that not only the strict mono- theistic religion of Islam objected to the Christian worshipping of Jesus as God, but it was commonly believed that Christians also worshipped his mother, Mary, as a goddess. This may have been the result of a mis- understanding of the term Theotokos, literally meaning “God-bearer”, but also means “Mother of God”, which was attributed to Mary by the Christians, who used the phrase Theotokos in their liturgical worship. Likewise, in Protestant theology, there was a reaction to the excessive adoration of the Virgin Mary in the non-liturgical devotions of the churches of the Latin West, which was termed “Mariolatry.” However, as Jaroslav Pelikan noted, the Eastern churches commemorated and cel- ebrated Mary as the Theotokos in their liturgical worship and hymnology.2 The place of the Theotokos in the liturgical worship of the Eastern Chris- tian churches does not only show the spiritual relation between the Virgin Mother and the people who commemorate her, but it is primarily a creedal affirmation of the Christology of the believers praying those hymns addressed to the Theotokos. -

33-Day Preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Following the itinerary of Saint Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort with selections of writings from the Popes and Saints 1 Introduction Saint Louis de Montfort set forth a revolution of spirituality in teaching us about Marian consecration and giving us a 33-day plan to prepare our souls for that big step. What is this consecration? He described this consecration as being a form of “slavery” to Mary. Slavery means that we do nothing without her. We choose not to have a will apart from hers. He even invites us to wear a chain to signify that close bond with her. He elaborated the various consequences of that bond, saying that we share everything with her including our prayers, our intentions, our actions, and our merits. Fundamentally he is saying that we choose to become totally dependent on her: we receive everything through her and share everything with her. At first this sounds radical and may even sound a little scary or seem like a lot of work. As we come to understand the way the spirit of the world has infected our thinking, however, and as we get in touch with our own woundedness, we come to discover that this is a merciful gift from heaven. It is a sweet path of salvation. In fact, it is better than we could have ever hoped for! What it means is that there is a sweet, loving, perfect mother who actually wants to live in this kind of close relationship with us. -

Anja Becker, Julia Schmeer Ave maris stella Hans Sachs und Maria im Spannungsfeld von Tradition, Innovation und Reformation Mit einer Vorüberlegung zum Analysieren vormoderner Übersetzungen Andreas Kraß hat in seinen Studien zu deutschen Übersetzungen lateinischer Sequenzen, insbesondere des Stabat mater dolorosa, darauf hingewiesen, dass mittelalterlich-volkssprachliches Übersetzen sich als Adaptation vollzieht: Der Prätext werde hierbei an die konkrete Lebenssituation der zeitgenössischen Rezipienten angepasst, wobei vornehmlich pragmatische, literaturhistorische und frömmigkeitsgeschichtliche Faktoren bestimmend seien.1 Die meisten deut- schen Sequenzübersetzungen emanzipieren sich deutlich von ihren lateini- schen Vorlagen,2 daneben gibt es aber auch solche Versionen, die sich dem Prätext subordinieren, Kraß bezeichnet diese als ‚glossierende Adaptationen‘.3 In diesem Beitrag sollen Übersetzungen des Marienhymnus Ave maris stella untersucht werden. Im Allgemeinen kann man feststellen, dass sich volks- sprachliche Übertragungen lateinischer Hymnen weitaus weniger von ihren lateinischen Vorlagen emanzipieren, als dies bei deutschen Sequenzüberset- zungen der Fall ist. Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. The Perfect Consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary According to the Teachings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort By Fr. Thomas Steinke The Importance of Making the Consecration to Jesus through Mary I am basing my conference today on the book "True Devotion to Mary" which is universally acclaimed as the single greatest and most theologically authoritative book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever to have been written. In it De Montfort says that “the formation and education of the great saints who will come at the end of the world are reserved to her, for only this singular and wondrous virgin can produce in union with the Holy Spirit singular and wondrous things.”1 Literally, you could be one of those great saints and will be one of those great saints if you live out this consecration. After today’s talk, you should have a very good idea of how to live out this consecration and thus become a great saint. Papal Support I want to begin by talking about the importance of making the consecration to Mary according to the method of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Since as Catholics we believe the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its papal documents, I want to establish papal support for this devotion. Pope Leo XIII encouraged everyone to make acts of consecration to the Virgin Mary based on the method of Saint Louis de Montfort. He also beatified de Montfort in 1888, adopted de Montfort's Marian terminology (calling Mary the "Mediatrix" and "Co-Redemptrix"), and wrote no less than ten encyclicals on the Rosary. -

Based on the thirteenth-century hymn used for vespers on the feast days of the Virgin Mary and of other female saints, the words are in seven litany-like verses that open with praise for the Virgin Mary, implore for intercession in the central verses, and end with a doxological commendation of the Trinity (ex. 1 and 2). Ad Caeli Reginam accepted so that with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, of October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary.[2] 2 Basic teachings According to Catholic teaching Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her divine motherhood of Je- sus Christ, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of salvation. Mary was cho- sen as Mother of Christ in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race: “As Christ, the new Adam must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam.”[3] 3 Context The Church has always taught that Mary is far above all other creatures in dignity, and after her Son possesses pri- macy over all. Mary, Mother of God
MARY, MOTHER OF GOD I. Mary, the Mother of Jesus Mariology is based upon the intimate bond that links Jesus with Mary: she is his mother. The NT testifies to this fact. She is first mentioned in the Bible not by name, but as the mother who gives Jesus his earthly life. Through her he becomes our brother, shares our life, and makes us share in the son ship of God” “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law that we might receive the full rights as sons.” -Mary’s life is hidden in the humility of Nazareth. The exalted language of our liturgical celebrations should not estrange her from our human world. We encounter her first as the maid of Nazareth who is called to a task totally beyond her understanding: to share in God’s design for the renewal of our human family. Her greatness lies in the silent faith with which she surrenders herself to a vocation which was hidden in God’s love: “Blessed is she who believed!” -According to modern biology, Mary is more closely related to Jesus than in the older view. Through her, and through her alone, Jesus becomes heir of the lineage of inheritance which leads back to the origin of the human family, to “Adam, who is from God” (Lk 3:38). This is the significance of Luke’s genealogy. -The psychological dependence of the child on the mother leads to the psychological bond, the intimate communion between mother and child.
