GUIDELINES FOR CONCERTS IN CHURCH DIOCESE OF HARRISBURG Office of Worship BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION The Church holds a vast and wonderful treasure of sacred and religious music that continually lifts the mind and heart to God. Sacred music, whether vocal or instrumental, has an integral place in our history and worship. The recent documents of Vatican II, namely, the Constitution on the Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Instruction Musicam Sacram, the Instruction Liturgicae Instauratione, as well as the prescriptions of the Code of Canon Law, Canons 1210, 1213 and 1222 treat of the integrity and importance of music in the life of the Church. Some types of sacred music do not always have a proper place within the liturgical celebration. Gounod’s “Sanctus” from the Mass of Saint Cecilia is certainly a beautiful and spiritually moving piece, but no longer has a place during the Sunday Mass. It is not only lengthy but does not allow for the active participation of the faithful during the prominent acclamation. The “Gloria” by John Rutter, a contemporary composer and conductor, another marvelous piece of sacred music, would not have an appropriate place in the liturgy because of its length (more than seventeen minutes). Yet such magnificent music deserves to be fostered and preserved. This is done not only in recordings, but also in concerts held in public places. The increase in the number of concerts in general has given rise to a more frequent use of churches for such events. Churches are considered to be in many ways apt places for holding a concert especially because of their size, acoustics, aesthetics and even practicality (e.g., as facilities for organ recitals). -

Visit to the Vatican In the last newsletter we mentioned the honour that the cathedral choir had received in being the first Anglican cathedral choir to be invited to sing at the Papal Mass on the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul in St Peter’s Square, as well, as being invited to sing in a concert in the Sistine Chapel before the Pope and the ambassadors to the Holy See with the Sistine Chapel Choir. We are grateful to Ioan O’Reilly, one of the choristers, for writing his account of this momentous visit, which follows below. The service can be seen on YouTube, accessed via the Cathedral website. Rome Trip – 2018 This has been an amazing year for the choir; with performances attended by members of the Royal family and a home Three Choirs Festival! Yet by far the most exciting and exotic part of the year was the choir’s trip to Rome... The choir set out on its travels on Tuesday, 26th June, and in no time at all the fun of the trip had started when the organ scholar forgot his lunch (and upon realising that it was still in his fridge quickly sprinted off). -

Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA In the fifth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist tells us that, after seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the mountain. His disciples came to him, and he began teaching them (Mt 5:1–2). After the Beatitudes, Jesus presented the sayings on salt and light, which Daniel Harrington tells us, “serve to define the identity of those who follow Jesus faithfully.”1 You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house” (Mt 5:13–15, RNAB). As followers of the Lord Jesus who have been baptized into his passion, death, and resurrection, we are the salt of the earth and light of the world. To be salt and light, especially in today’s world, is a challenge for any Christian, but for us who have taken on diocesan and parochial responsibilities for promoting the liturgical life in our particular churches, Jesus’ teaching provides additional challenges. Given the seemingly endless number of liturgies to prepare, the constant barrage of phone calls and emails from the Christian faithful yearning to have their questions answered, and growing piles of articles and books to read to keep up-to-date on sacramental and liturgical issues, members of diocesan commissions for liturgy, music, and art and worship office staff members might understandably feel like salt that has lost its taste. -

Director: Kevin W. Irwin, S.T.D. The Missa Chrismatis (“Chrism Mass”), the annual ritual Mass that celebrates the blessing of the sacramental oils ordinarily held on Holy Thursday morning, was revised in accordance with the decrees of Vatican II and promulgated by the authority of Pope Paul VI and inserted in the newly promulgated Missale Romanum in 1970. Also revised, in tandem with the Missa Chrismatis, is the Ordo Benedicendi Oleum Catechumenorum et Infirmorum et Conficiendi Chrisma (Ordo), and promulgated editio typica on December 3, 1970. Based upon the scholarly consensus of liturgical theologians that liturgical events are acts of theology, this study seeks to delineate the liturgical theology of the Missa Chrismatis by applying the method of liturgical theology proposed by Kevin Irwin in Context and Text. A critical study of the prayers, both ancient and new, for the consecration of Chrism and the blessing of the oils of the sick and of catechumens reveals rich theological data. In general it can be said that the fundamental theological principle of the Missa Chrismatis is initiatory and consecratory. The study delves into the history of the chrismal liturgy from its earliest foundations as a Mass in the Gelasianum Vetus, including the chrismal consecration and blessing of the oils during the missa in cena domini, recorded in the Hadrianum, Ordines Romani, and Pontificales Romani of the Middle Ages, through the reforms of 1955-56, 1965 and, finally, 1970. -

He received his earliest education at Orillia, Ontario. Following a brief time in Ohio, the family moved to Southern California in 1918 where Alden enrolled in Sacred Heart School in Los Angeles. After his father’s death, young Alden sold newspapers at the foot of Angels Flight, the funicular railway in Los Angeles, to help support his mother and six brothers. ALDEN’S EARLY DAYS IN LOS ANGELES Alden worked for four years as an office boy for the Pacific Telephone Company and at night took classes at the Polytechnic High School in commercial drawing and mechanics. In 1922, he entered the seminary to study for the priesthood for the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles. He attended St Joseph Seminary in Mountain View and St Patrick Seminary, Menlo Park and was ordained a priest by Bishop John J Cantwell on May 14, 1932 for the Diocese of Los Angeles – San Diego. FATHER BELL BEGINS HIS MINISTRY Father Bell’s first assignment was as a curate at St Elizabeth Parish in Altadena. He was then transferred to the Cathedral Chapel Parish in Los Angeles to serve as a curate. In 1937, the diocese sent him to the Catholic University of America for graduate studies where he earned a Master of Science degree in social work. -

Welcome to Saints Alive For centuries the faith of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers has been fashioned, refined, colored and intensified by the sheer variety and passion of the lives of the great Christian saints. Their passions, their strengths and weaknesses, the immense variety of their lives have intrigued children young and old for ages. You may even have been named for a particular saint – Dorothy, Dolores, Anne or Elizabeth; Malachi, Francis or even Hugh. So why not celebrate some of those remarkable people through music? As we resume our trek along the Mission Road, we high- light music written in the Americas to celebrate the life and work of our city’s patron saint, Francis, as well as the lives and mission of other men and women venerated by the great musical masters. Saint Cecilia, patroness of music, is very much alive and present in a setting of “Resuenen los cla- rines” by the Mexican Sumaya. Bassani, an Italian who thrived in Bolivia when it was still called Upper Peru, pays homage to Saint Joseph in a Mass setting bearing his name. Its blend of self-taught craftsmanship and mastery of orchestration is fascinating, intriguing, even jolly. It’s as if Handel and the young Mozart had joined hands, jumped on a boat and headed to the heart of South America. What a nice addition to our library! Chants taught by the zealous, mission-founding Sancho have been sent our way – chants in his own hand, no less. Ignatius Loyola is represented by three short motets (that’s almost too glamorous a name for them, they are more folkish in their style) from Bolivia. -
14. Suspension Tallis
SUSPENSION: A SERIES OF MUSICAL REFLECTIONS No:14 Time for a little bit more choral music! As many of our previous SUSPENSIONs have been, this piece is a setting of a liturgical text, namely John 14:15-21, which is one of this Sunday’s lessons. In this instance, the gorgeous setting is by English composer Thomas Tallis, and is called ‘If Ye Love Me’. This piece is another example of a motet (see SUSPENSION 10), this time featuring four voice parts. In this case the motet is comprised of what we call ‘homophony’, meaning that all four voice parts move at the same time, save for a few instances of imitation. This differs from previous motets discussed in this series, which feature the more heavily imitative, ‘contrapuntal’ style which was also popular. In the history of English choral music and indeed, English music more widely, Tallis was just about as influential as it gets. Serving in the Chapel Royal for over 40 years, Tallis navigated his was through one of the most turbulent times in the Church’s history, through four monarchs, and multiple changes in lectionary, worship and music. Many music historians have analysed how all of those changes can be easily seen reflected in Tallis’ output through his life. In some ways that’s quite a comforting thought at this time. Christians have lived through all sorts of difficult and troubling times, and have always managed to find creative and beautiful ways to express their devotion and admiration for God, his word, and his creation. Maybe Christians of the future will look to the music of our times for comfort and inspiration.
