Congressman Graves, as the newest member of D. Paul Robichaux Joseph Scontrino Congress (inaugurated as PRESIDENT EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Louisiana’s 6th District Congressman four months ago), was very interested in visiting lo- cal industry and hearing all about the Port of South Louisiana and its importance to both the local and national economy. Congressman Boustany, who has been a member of U.S. House of Repre- sentatives since 2013, visited the Port of South Louisiana and met with local, industry, and public officials in our port district to discuss how our congressional delegation is working to secure federal funding for projects that are important to the River Region. Congressman Boustany informed the group how he was P. Joey Murray Stanley Bazile instrumental in securing legislative language in the Water Resources Reform & TREASURER SECRETARY Development Act that was passed into law last year and how it will increase the amount of federal dollars being spent on port maintenance every year until 2025. Congressman Boustany and Congressman Graves were given an overview of the Port’s assets and accomplishments and a tour of the port’s public terminal, Globalplex Intermodal Terminal during their visit. A site visit to Marathon Petroleum facilities offered the two Congressmen an insightful presentation on Marathon’s history and economic importance to the local economy. The two Congressmen were given tours of the Maritime Security Operations Center (MSOC), at Globalplex Terminal, the recently-acquired St. John Airport, and a boat tour for Congressman Boustany to get a dockside view of the industrial facilities and to see the huge amount of maritime traffic that exists on the lower Mississippi River. A group of tourists burst into the estab- lishment that day demanding to know where they could find the Louisiana sugar museum. Guidry, president of the Godchaux-Henderson House, couldn’t believe the question didn’t have an answer. “I was blown away because we don’t have a sugar museum,” he said. “If we did, at 30 years old I couldn’t tell them where it was. Ever since that happened I always wanted to put a sugar museum in Reserve because the Godchaux sugar refinery was one of the biggest in the world.” Leon Godchaux developed the Godchaux sugar refinery after he made his initial money in New Orleans as the owner of a department store. A Jewish immigrant from France who moved here in 1836, Godchaux had big dreams and would later realize it by his hand in creating 1 the town of Reserve and its 14 sugar plantations. The refinery operated from 1915 to 1985.
