Game #1: Sept. 7, 2013 at Wisconsin Lutheran College

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - For the third time in the last four years, the Ripon College football team has opened their season with a victory. The most recent season opening win came Saturday night in a 31-24 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran. The Red Hawks, who never trailed in the game, put together one of their most balanced games in recent years, rushing for 297 yards and passing for 169. Quarterback Tom Sawyer led the way with 131 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while also completing 12 of his 20 passes. Sawyer’s first TD came in the final minutes of the first quarter, as he punched it in from two yards out to put Ripon on the board first. Wisconsin Lutheran’s Donavin Tucker would tie the game early in the second quarter, scoring on an eight yard run. Eight minutes later, Sawyer capped an 11-play, 60 yard drive with another two-yard TD run. The two teams then exchanged field goals, giving the Red Hawks a 17-10 halftime lead. Ripon doubled their lead on the opening possession of the second half, which saw them march 75 yards in 11 plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Connor Greenwald. With under one minute left in the third quarter, Wisconsin Lutheran flashed some big play ability, as Mike Reeves scored on a 60-yard run to cut the lead to seven once again. As they would do all night though, the Red Hawks kept the Warriors at arms length with Sawyer’s third and final touchdown of the day, this time scoring from seven yards out. Reeves added another touchdown for Wis- consin Lutheran late in the game, but their ensuing onsides kick would be recovered by Ripon, essentially ending the game. Next to Sawyer, Ripon was led by Greenwald’s 98 yards on 21 carris. Eric Langman added 33 carries on just four totes in addition to his two receptions for 25 yards. Tommy Zak led all receivers in the game, grabbing six receptions for 83 yards. Defensively, the Red Hawks were led by Mark Hinner, Logan Will, Nick Weiss and Saige Anderson, all of which recorded a team-high six tackles. Jon Petkoff added four tackles, to go along with one interception. Wisconsin Lutheran was led by Reeves’ 106 yards on 12 carries (8.8 ypc). Drew Dyrssen completed 17-of- 32 passes for 207 yards, but more importantly was kept out of the end zone through the air. Sam Dunham led all players with 13 tackles. The Red Hawks will now get ready for their 2013 home and conference opener, as they’ll host Carroll Uni- versity next weekend. That game will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#.

Game #2: Sept. 14, 2013 vs. Carroll University

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon and Carroll entered the weekend with the all-time series between the two football programs tied 29-29-5 after 63 meetings. In the 64th meeting on Saturday, Ripon took the lead in the series with a 22-20 victory over the Pio- neers. Carroll jumped out to a 17-0 second quarter lead, but as most games in the rivalry have gone, it wasn’t over until the final gun had sounded, as this marks the sixth time in their last eight meetings that the final score was decided by seven points or less. Carroll (1-1, 0-1 MWC) didn’t waste much time, as they took the game’s opening drive 66 yards in 11 plays, capped by a four-yard Daniel Arden run to put the Pioneers on the board. They would use another 11-play drive later in the quarter to set up a 35-yard field goal from Tyler Raymaker to take a 10-0 advantage. Carroll’s lead expanded to 17-0 with eight minutes to play in the half when Corey Nelson caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Schovanec. “Being down 17-0 halfway through the second quarter really says a lot about what our players are made of,” Ripon head football coach Ron Ernst said. “I’m really proud of their perseverence today. It shows a tremendous amount of character that they just kept fighting and kept playing hard.” The first step in Ripon’s comeback came in the blink of an eye. After gaining just 64 yards in their first four possessions combined, the Red Hawks (2-0, 1-0 MWC) scored their first points of the game on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Tom Sawyer to Eric Langman, which was the only play of their fifth possession. After the extra point was blocked, Ripon got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff when Carroll let the ball drop and Lean- dre Some was there to recover it for the Red Hawks. That set up an eight-play, 32 yard drive that was capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run by Kyle Hafemeisterr, sending Ripon to the locker room trailing by four points. Ripon took their first lead of the game on their opening possession of the second half when Hafemeister scored from 14 yards out to cap an eight-play, 77-yard drive. The extra point was blocked once again however, keep- ing Ripon’s lead at two points. With Carroll knocking on the door with a first and goal from the six yard line early in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers failed to punch it in, leading to an 18-yard field goal to take a 20-19 lead. Not to be outdone, Ripon took the ensuing possession 51 yards on 11 plays, before stalling at the Carroll 22-yard line. That led to a 39-yard field goal by Jordan Remsza to give Ripon the lead for good. Remsza had entered Saturday’s game without a field goal attempt in his career, but came through when it mattered most. “Our defense came up big and made some key plays when we need it,” Ernst said. “Remsza also did a tre- mendous job today as our kicker. He came up with a clutch kick that helped us secure this victory.” As is the case with most games in the Carroll-Ripon rivalry, the final minutes weren’t easy. Ripon gave the Pioneers one final chance, as they began their final drive at their own 43 yard line with two and a half minutes to play. After the drive stalled at Ripon’s 16-yard line, Raymaker lined up to attempt a kick from 33 yards with 38 seconds left on the clock. It would be wide left, sending the Ripon faithful home happy. Connor Greenwald led the Red Hawks in rushing on the day with 98 yards on the ground, but it was Ha- femeister who was the most efficient player on the field, scoring two touchdowns on just two carries. Eric Hussin added 77 yards rushing, while Sawyer completed 6-of-14 passes for 131 yards. Defensively, Ripon was led by Luke Morgan, who finished with 14 tackles. The Red Hawks also recorded two sacks in the game, coming on back-to- back plays by Saige Anderson and Damian Farr to end the first half with Carroll in Ripon territory. The Pioneers were led by Arden’s 136 yards on 22 carries (6.2 ypc), as he entered the game as the Midwest Conference’s leading rusher. Quarterback Tyler Schovanec completed 12 of his 22 passes for 137 yards. Ripon’s win now sets up an early season match-up with St. Norbert College next weekend. That game will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday in DePere, Wis. and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#. “This is a tough conference. Any team can win on any given Saturday, so we have to be prepared every single week,” Ernst said. “We have a very tough opponent in St. Norbert next week that has historically been an outstand- ing rivalry with us and has had some great teams in the past. I don’t expect that to be any different next weekend.”

Game #3: Sept. 21, 2013 at St. Norbert College

DePERE, Wis. - Ripon fell behind St. Norbert early on Saturday afternoon and could never fully recover, losing to the Green Knights 33-6 to suffer their first loss of the season. Despite the lopsided score, the Red Hawks were only outgained 285-210 in total offense. The difference in the game turned out to be two Ripon intercep- tions and a blocked punt, which SNC turned into 20 second quarter points. St. Norbert (2-1, 2-0 MWC) opened the scoring with just under three minutes to play in the opening quarter, as Brad Boockmeier found pay dirt from one yard out. They would score a second touchdown early in the second quarter, capitalizing on a blocked punt and turning it into a five-play, 23-yard drive that culminated in a two yard touchdown pass from James Tringali to Patrick Burke. The Green Knights would score again five minutes later when Boockmeier scored again on a 51-yard touchdown recpetion, capitalizing on a Ripon interception two plays earlier. The Red Hawks threw a second INT later in the quarter, which St. Norbert turned into a two-play, one-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard TD plunge by Tringali, giving the Green Knights a 27-0 halftime advantage. The Red Hawks (2-1, 1-1 MWC) would get on the scoreboard with just over four minutes left in the third quarter when Nathan Silloway caught his first career touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Stephen Covalt. That would be all the scoring Ripon could muster however. Tringali added a late touchdown pass for the Green Knights to complete the scoring. Ripon, which recorded its lowest rushing output of the season with 128 yards on the ground, was led by Connor Greenwald’s 37 yards on 13 carries. Covalt entered the game in relief of Tom Sawyer to throw for 53 yards and the score and rush for 32 more yards on 15 carries. Andy Krueger recorded Ripon’s only sack of the day, to go along with three solo tackles. Boockmeier led St. Norbert with 77 yards on 25 carries, while also leading the team in receiving with 85 yards on five catches and two total touchdowns. Game #4: Sept. 28, 2013 vs. Illinois College

RIPON, Wis. - Making his first start as a Red Hawk, sophomore quarterback Steven Covalt rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns, stepping in for an injured Tom Sawyer, but that was not enough, as Ripon dropped its second consecutive game, 44-28 to Illinois College. Despite the 16-point differential, Illinois College outgained Ripon in total offense by just 13 yards (407-394). Covalt’s first touchdown came on the very first drive of the game, running 56 yards for the score on a fourth-and-one play. Illinois College would kick a field goal on their first possession and would later get the ball back and take the lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Michael Bates to Kevin Fuller late in the opening quar- ter. Ripon’s Jordan Remsza tied things up early in the second with a 28-yard field goal, but Illinois College would score the next 20 points on touchdown runs by Bates and Cecil Brimmage and a 34 yard TD pass fom Bates to Bryce Heaton. Ripon put an end to that run on the final play of the first half when Covalt scored on a one-yard plunge to cut Illinois College’s lead to 31-16 at halftime. Covalt scored again from one yard out with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, but after the extra point was blocked, Ripon trailed 31-22 entering the final quarter. Ripon cut the Blueboys lead to three just one minute into the final quarter when Covalt scored his fourth and final touchdown of the day again from one yard out, which was set up by an interception by Dakotah Kirchen- witz. After Illinois College went three and out on the ensuing possession, Ripon got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Red Hawks fumbled on the initial play of their drive. The ball was scooped up by IC’s Zack Hanlon and returned 15 yards for the touchdown, giving the Blueboys a 37-28 advantage. They would tack on an insurance touchdown later in the quarter when Brimmage scored his second TD of the game, this time on a 28-yard run. “We just made some simple mistakes and had some missed opportunities,” Ripon Head Football Coach Ron Ernst said. “We have to be more consistent as a team and eliminate our mental mistakes.” Ripon finished the game with 321 rushing yards. Connor Greenwald was second on the team with 73 yards on 14 carries (5.2 ypc), while also leading the team in receiving with three catches for 28 yards. Covalt com- pleted six of his 15 passes for 73 yards. Defensively, Kirchenwitz recorded the only takeaway for the Red Hawks, while tying for the team lead in tackles with seven. (five solo). Andy Mills led the defensive effort with a game-high 12 tackles (six solo), to go along with one pass breakup. The Blueboys recovered two Ripon fumbles on the day to win the turnover battle, 2-1. “Our players really played hard today. They battled all game and competed to the very end, which is some- thing we can be proud of,” Ernst said. “We’re going to get things fixed and get after it next week.” The Red Hawks will now look forward to Knox College next weekend. That game will be played on Satur- day at 1 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill. and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#.

Game #5: Oct. 5, 2013 at Knox College

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Ripon College football team snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday after- noon, defeating Knox College 37-29 behind 425 rushing yards. That is just 11 rushing yards shy of the top 10 single game performances in school history. The win marks Ripon’s 17th consecutive victory over Knox, dating back to 1987, and improves Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst’s career record against the Prairie Fire to 17-0. The Red Hawks (3-2, 2-2 MWC) looked like they were in for a big day early on as they took the opening drive 75 yards in six plays, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown run by Eric Langman for the first points of the game. Knox (0-5, 0-4 MWC) was intent on making things interesting however, tying the game on the ensuing drive on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard plunge by Derek Mortensen. Ripon grabbed the lead back early in the second quarter when quarterback Stephen Covalt found pay dirt from 14 yards away. The Red Hawks then took a 17-7 lead into halftime thanks to a 38-yard field goal by Jordan Remsza with just seconds remaining in the quarter. Like the Red Hawks did to open the game, Knox took the initial drive of the second half and marched right down the field for a touchdown, going 68 yards on 16 plays, the last of which was another one-yard plunge by Mortensen. Knox would take its first lead of the game with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter when Luke Oosterbaan found Ilir Emini for an 18-yard touchdown pass. That’s when Ripon’s Connor Greenwald took the game into his own hands. The sophomore fullback scored from two yards out to give the Red Hawks the lead with 11 seconds left in the second quarter. He wasn’t done there, adding two more touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, both coming from inside the six yard line. Knox added a three-yard touchdown pass from Oosterbaan to Neal Moon with 22 seconds left to play, but the ensuing onsides kick was recovered by the Red Hawks, putting them in the victory formation. Three Red Hawks finished the game with at least 80 yards rushing. Covalt led the way with 134 yards on 22 carries (6.1 ypc), while Langman finished with 85 yards on eight carries (10.6 ypc) and Kyle Hafemeister gained 80 yards on nine carries (8.9 ypc). Greenwald added 66 yards on the ground, to go along with his three scores. Defensively, Ripon recovered two Knox fumbles, which led to both of Greenwald’s fourth quarter touchdowns. Knox was led by Mortensen, who finished the game with 117 rushing yards. Emini was also a thorn in Ripon’s side, catching 11 passes for 153 yards. Oosterbaan finished the game with 213 yards on 17-of-26 passing. Ripon will now have a much needed bye next week to get rested up for their next game on Saturday, Octo- ber 19 at Grinnell College. That game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#.
