Game #1: Sept. 1, 2012 vs. Wisconsin Lutheran College

RIPON, Wis. - For the first time in three years, the Ripon College football team has opened a season with a loss. The Red Hawks lost 31-0 to Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday afternoon, marking the first time they’ve been shut out since their 2006 season opener. That also marks the first loss to Wisconsin Lutheran, whom Ripon had defeated in each of their past two season openers. “That was as frustrating an effort as I’ve seen in a long time because I thought we were prepared and that we’d play well,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We have a lot of new faces, so if we’re going to have a suc- cessful season, they’ll need to improve greatly from week to week so that we can bounce back and play better each game.” The game was close early, as Wisconsin Lutheran (1-0) scored just once in the first quarter on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Zach Shaw. The Warriors would add to that lead early in the second period when Taylor Pelot found the end zone from 13 yards out. A Josh Ruppel 17 yard field goal made the score 17-0 at halftime. The Red Hawks (0-1) were able to sustain a few long drives, only to see two of those drives end on intercep- tions inside the 35-yard line and another end on a fumble inside the 20. Wisconsin Lutheran took full advantage of those miscues. They put the game out of reach midway through the third quarter, as Shaw found Josh Stodola with a leaping grab on the side end zone for a 24-point lead. They would score once more in the third to cap the scoring on an 88-yard run by Mike Reeves. Wisconsin Lutheran outgained Ripon in total offensive yardage, 370-229, while also outgaining them on the ground, 205-187. Eric Hussin led Ripon with 51 yards rushing on seven carries, while Eric Langman toted the rock for 41 yards on six attempts. Tom Sayer completed 8-of-17 passes for 42 yards. His top target was Tommy Zak, who recorded two receptions for 15 yards. Defensively, Nick Weiss led the Red Hawks with eight gtackles, while Dylan Mroczenski and Gage Ferkey each recorded seven, including one tackle for loss apiece. The Warriors attack was led by Shaw, who completed 14-of-25 passes for 165 yards. Caleb Wolf caught five passes for 80 yards, while Stodola had four receptions for 39 yards and the touchdown. Reeves ran 10 times for 121 yards, while Pelot gained 51 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Jim Wheeler had one of the biggest defensive plays of the game, intercepting a Sawyer pass and returning it 77 yards. Eric Zeitler also recorded an interception for the Warriors, who sacked the quarterback three times. “The good news is that we go into next week with a clean slate being that it’s the first conference game of the season and I’m hoping we can take advantage of that,” said Ernst. The Red Hawks will open their Midwest Conference schedule next Saturday at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. That game will begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen live via webcast at http://client.stretchinternet. com/client/ripon.portal. “We need to improve at every aspect of the game in order to get to where we want to be, which is the top of the Midwest Conference standings,” Ernst said.

Game #2: Sept. 8, 2012 at Carroll University

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Ripon football team got off to a 3-0 start Saturday afternoon against Carroll University, but were undone by a 24-point second quarter by the Pioneers, which helped Carroll to a 30-24 victory. The Pio- neers outgained Ripon in total yardage, 371-340, while also winning the turnover battle, 3-0.

Ripon (0-2, 0-1 MWC) took their first lead of the season on their first points of the year when Jacob Gahart con- nected on his school record 32nd field goal, converting from 23 yards away with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter. That lead lasted five seconds into the second period when Tyler Raymaker made a 17-yard field goal for Carroll (2-1, 1-0 MWC) to tie the game.

The Pioneers then proceeded to pour on the points, beginning with a 21 yard touchdown run by Lamont Wil- liams. Three minutes later, Casey Legan found the end zone from eight yards out. Carroll’s third and final touch- down of the quarter came with one minute to play when Justin Butterfield found Tyler Ostrander for a 24 yard touchdown pass, giving the Pioneers 24 unanswered points.

Ripon began to crawl back into the game in the third quarter, beginning with a three yard touchdown run by Mi- chael Crusan, which capped an 18-play, 75-yard drive, eating up eight and a half minutes of clock. The Red Hawks drew closer in the fourth quarter on another long drive, as they went 75 yards in 19 plays, again taking up more than eight minutes of clock, capped by a five yard touchdown run by Max Herrmann. Freshman Connor Green- wald completed the comeback with a two yard run with two and a half minutes to play, tying the score at 24.

Carroll would get one final shot however and they took full advantage of it. On the ensuing possession, the Pio- neers went 75 yards in six plays, scoring on a seven yard run by Williams to secure the 30-24 victory.

Herrmann led the Red Hawks with 114 yards on 29 carries, while quarterback Tom Sawyer carried the ball 14 times for 79 yards. Defensively, Ripon recorded three sacks, with two coming from Jon Petkoff and one going to Damian Bradley.

Williams finished the game as Carroll’s leading rusher, gaining 54 yards on eight carries. Butterfield completed 15- of-26 passes for 237 yards, while Ostrander was his leading receiver with six catches for 79 yards.

Ripon will try to rebound next week with their first conference home game of the season against St. Norbert Col- lege. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon.

Game #3: Sept. 15, 2012 vs. St. Norbert College

RIPON, Wis. - Seventeen minutes into Saturday’s game against St. Norbert College, Ripon looked like they would be in for a long day, as they fell behind by three touchdowns early in the second quarter. That lead would vanish with 24 unanswered points by the Red Hawks over the next two quarters. The tides would change again in the fourth however, with the lead changing hands three times and St. Norbert walking away with a 35-31 victory after the dust settled. St. Norbert’s first three scoring drives took a combined nine plays and included a pair of touchdowns by Austin WIlliams, who scored on a 43 yard reception and a 10 yard run. Joe Green added a 43 yard reception be- fore Ripon (0-3, 0-2 MWC) could get on the board. On the ensuing possession, Ripon went 75 yards in 17 plays, culminating in a 10 yard touchdown pass from Tom Sawyer to Kyle Hafemesiter to get the Red Hawks on the board. Sawyer added a one-yard run just before halftime to pull Ripon within one touchdown. “I was proud of the way we came back, but we just can’t keep digging ourselves into holes like we’ve been doing,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We just have to eliminate the big plays and be more consistent.” On the first possession of the second half, Sawyer displayed his playmaking ability on a 63-yard scamper down to the one-yard line. Two plays later, he found the end zone for the second time in the game to tie the score. After a three-and-out on St. Norbert’s first possession of the second half, Ripon put another drive together that ended in a 27-yard field goal by Jacob Gahart to give Ripon its first lead of the contest. Ripon’s lead lasted mid-way through the fourth quarter when St. Norbert’s Brad Boockmeier scored from five yards out. That was answered by another long drive by the Red Hawks, going 77 yards in 11 plays, covering nearly five and a half minutes to take a 31-28 lead with one and a half minutes to play. The ensuing kickoff was returned 46 yards by St. Norbert’s Brian Fliess, setting the Green Knights (2-1, 2-0 MWC) up nicely for a game- winning score. They would take full advantage, as their first play of the drive was a completion to Joe Green that took them down to the one yard line. Two plays later, they were in the end zone with 12 seconds to spare. Despite the loss, Ripon outgained St. Norbert in total yardage, 398-343, while also achieving 10 more first downs than the Green Knights. Ripon held the ball for nearly 42 of the game’s 60 minutes, while running more than twice as many plays as St. Norbert. Sawyer led the Red Hawks with 103 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns on the ground. He also com- pleted 10 of his 13 passes for 105 yards through the air. His top receiver was Tommy Zak, who caught six passes for 77 yards, including a long of 38. Defensively, Ripon was led by Nick Weiss’ eight tackles (six solo) and Luke Morgan’s one interception. St. Norbert was led by Williams’ 73 yards and two scores, while James Tringall completed 10-of-16 passes for 222 yards and two more touchdowns. Joe Green led all receivers with four receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. Petr Bohacek recorded a game-high 15 tackles for the Green Knights, which included a pair of sacks, while Nick Keller tallied 10 tackles. The loss marks Ripon’s first three-game losing streak since 1993 and only the second time in Ernst’s 22- year tenure with the team. It is also the first time the Red Hawks have begun a season 0-3 since 1987. They will look to turn things around next weekend at Illinois College. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday in Jacksonville, Ill. “We’re in the toughest part of our schedule right now and our players are battling hard,” Ernst said. “We’re certainly capable of playing better and that’s exactly what we plan on doing.”

RIPON, Wis. - For one half of play, the Ripon College football team held the Midwest Conference’s top offense to just 10 points. Despite containing the Blueboys in the first half, the Red Hawks couldn’t do the same in the second, as Illinois College used a 36 point second half to springboard them to a 46-21 victory. Illinois College (3-0, 2-0 MWC) got on the board first with a 28-yard field goal in the opening quarter. They added to that lead in the second quarter with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Branden Downing, which capped an 11-play, 99-yard drive. Ripon (0-4, 0-3 MWC) showed they can also put together a long drive, taking the ensuing possession 93 yards on 16 plays down to the one-yard line. With two chances to punch it into the end zone, the Red Hawks couldn’t get it done, as they went to the locker room trailing by 10. The Blueboys seized their opportunity in the second half, taking the third quarter’s first possession 69 yards on five plays, resulting in a 23 yard touchdown pass from Michael Bates to Kevin Wallace. Ripon answered five minutes later when Tom Sawyer found the end zone from two yards out for the Red Hawks’ first points of the game, capping a 76-yard drive. Illinois College’s defense would cause the next score, as Dakota Lammy scored on an 11 yard run one play after Dylan DeFauw returned an interception 30 yards. Ripon added another two-yard touchdown run from Tom Sawyer to cut the lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter, before the Blueboys offense really took off. Illinois College scored 22 points in the final 10 and a half minutes of the game, scoring twice on the ground and once through the air. Max Herrmann added a touchdown for the Red Hawks in the game’s final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to get the team’s first conference win of the season. Illinois College outgained Ripon in total yardage, 456-418, while outgaining them in passing yardage 236-98. Ripon did hold the advantage on the ground with 320 yards, compared to 220 for the Blueboys. Illinois College’s interception return was the only turnover in the contest. The Red Hawks were led by Sawyer’s 116 rushing yards. He also completed 7-of-18 passes for 98 yards. Michael Crusan added 73 yards for the Red Hawks, while Connor Greenwald gained 55 yards. Defensively, Ripon was led by Gage Ferkey’s 10 tackles. Bates led the Blueboys in both passing and rushing, completing 14-of-29 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 86 yards on 10 carries. Lammy added 58 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Kurt Frischman led the IC defense with 17 tackles, including one-half sack. Ripon will try to turn things around next weekend against Knox College in what will be the Red Hawks’ annual Homecoming contest. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. in Ripon.

Game #5: Sept. 29, 2012 vs. Knox College

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks football team got a monkey off their backs Saturday afternoon, defeating Knox College 42-17 for their first victory of the 2012 season. Ripon took a 21-17 lead in the final seconds of the first half that they would not relinquish, outscoring Knox 21-0 in the second half. The Red Hawks (1-4, 1-3 MWC) held the ball for what seemed like all day, with a time of possession of 44 minutes and 46 seconds. That was due in large part to a season-high 32 first downs and 436 rushing yards, which is the ninth-highest single game total in school history. Ripon also outgained Knox (0-5, 0-4 MWC) in total yardage, 520-277. “This win feels great because our players played very well,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “They have played well at times this season, but it was nice to see them put close to 60 minutes of solid football together. With all of the hard work our players and coaches have put into this season, it was nice to see it pay off today.” After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams combined for an offensive explosion of 38 points in the second period. Ripon broke the scoreless tie on the first play of the second quarter when Max Herrmann scored from two yards out. Knox answered with a 26-yard field goal on the ensuing possession, before Herrmann scored again with four and a half minutes left in the quarter, this time from one-yard out. Knox then got back into the game with two touchdowns in a one minute span. After a 42-yard touchdown pass from Luke Oosterbaan to Ilir Emini, the Prairie Fire recovered the ensuing kickoff, leading to a four yard touchdown run by Derek Mortensen to give Knox their first lead of the contest. That did not deter the Red Hawks however, as they took the ensuing possession and marched 70 yards in 10 plays using 1 minute and 11 seconds and culminat- ing in a three-yard touchdown run by freshman Connor Greenwald sending Ripon to the locker room with the lead. Greenwald finished the game with a career-high 106 yards on 18 carries (5.9 ypc), but what doesn’t show in the stats was his drive and determination that allowed him to get extra yardage as he refused to go down on several plays. “We knew Connor had that in him all the time. He has been showing flashes of it, but really had a breakout game today,” Ernst said. “The offensive line also did an outstanding job today, as did (quarterback) Tom Sawyer making some very good audible checks to put our players in positon to make some great plays. It was just a great all-around effort by everyone on the team.” One turning point in the game came on the first possession of the second half. With Knox driving for a go-ahead tochdown, Oosterbaan’s pass was intercepted by a leaping Logan Will, giving the Red Hawks’ defense a much-needed turnover, which they had been lacking for much of the first four games. “We’ve been working hard all week as a team to play the receivers more tightly on defense and be more phyiscal with them and Logan just made a nice play, which I thought was a key play at a time when we needed it most,” said Ernst. That led to a 16-play, 95 yard drive that saw Herrmann score his third touchdown of the day, again punch- ing it in from a yard out. In addition to his touchdowns, Herrmann also gained 100 yards on 21 carries, marking the third 100-yard performance of his career and second of the season. Sawyer added two fourth quarter touchdowns to cap the scoring, as he found paydirt from one and 15 yards away. He finished the game with a team-high 162 yards rushing on 29 carries (5.6 ypc) giving Ripon three 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since the final game of the 2011 season and just the second time in the last nine years. Sawyer also completed 6-of-10 passes for 84 yards. His favorite receiver on the day was Tommy Zak, who caught five of Sawyer’s six completions for a tiotal of 76 yards. Defensively, intercepted two passes, as Tyler Messerschmidt also had a pick in addition to Will’s. Gage Ferkey led the Red Hawks with six tackles (three solo), while Dylan Mroczenski registered five tackles (four solo). The Red Hawks will have a bye week next weekend, before getting back on the field with a home game against Grinnell College on October 13. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal# “There’s no doubt that our players gained some confidence today. This is a very young team, so they now know what it takes and can build on that,” Ernst said. “The bye week is coming at the right time where we can get some guys healthy and start building on this victory.”

Game #6: Oct. 13, 2012 vs. Grinnell College

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon football team picked up right where they left off before the bye week - with a victory. The Red Hawks defeated Grinnell College Saturday, 37-21, gaining 336 rushing yards and scoring all five touchdowns on the ground. The win is Ripon’s eighth straight over the Pioneers, dating back to 2004 and is the second consecutive victory for the Red Hawks this year. That pulls them into a seventh-place tie with Grinnell in the Midwest Conference standings, just one game out of fourth place. “Our guys played very well for four quarters today,” Ripon head coach Ron Ernst said. “It was a solid per- formance on offense, defense and special teams, so I was very pleased with how we progressed today.” Ripon (2-4, 2-3 MWC) didn’t waste much time, going 68 yards on seven plays on the game’s opening pos- session, which was capped by a three yard touchdown run by Max Herrmann. Grinnell (2-4, 2-3 MWC) answered with a 36-yard field goal on their first possession of the game, but Ripon continued to rack up the early yardage. The Red Hawks’ second possession of the contest took just four plays to go 75 yards, as the majority of it came on a 56-yard touchdown from Tom Sawyer, which seemed to be the theme of the first half. Entering halftime, Sawyer had ran for 171 yards on just nine carries. “Tom had a great day,” Ernst said. “At the quarterback position in this type of offense you have to be a good decision maker and he’s doing a great job of that. He’s a terrific athlete and we’re very glad to have him on our team.” The two teams would then trade field goals until two and a half minutes left in the second quarter when freshman Connor Greenwald found paydirt with a two-yard TD plunge, which capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Grinnell got back into the game on the opening possession of the second half, scoring on a 23-yard recep- tion from Sam Poulos to Jacob Meixler. That would be the only score of the third quarter, before Ripon put the game to bed for good in the fourth. Herrmann gave the Red Hawks a 16 point lead on an 11-yard touchdown run in the quarter’s first minute. That was followed five minutes later by a Michael Crusan touchdown from three yards out to give the Red Hawks a 22-point advantage. Grinnell added another touchdown in the final minutes, but it was too little, too late for the Pioneers. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and everyone on the team has a better understanding of what we’re trying to do schematically, so I think we’re getting to be a pretty good football team,” said Ernst. Sawyer finished the game with 184 yards on 15 carries, while Greenwald and Herrmann finished with 50 and 48 yards, respectively. Sawyer also completed 6-of-12 passes for 60 yards with four of those completions going to Tommy Zak, who finished the game with 47 receiving yards. Defensively, the Red Hawks recorded four sacks. One of those sacks came from Jon Petkoff, who also had the game’s only interception, to go along with nine tackles (five solo). Dylan Mroczenski led the team with 14 tack- les (six solo). Grinnell was led by TJ Schaid, who ran for 109 yards on 22 carries, while also recording a team-high four receptions for 27 yards. Ripon will now turn their focus towards next weekend’s game at Beloit College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. next Saturday in Beloit, Wis. and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal . “We just want to take each game one at a time and get on a roll so that we can finish the season really strong and we are on the verge of doing just that,” said Ernst.
