The Red Hawks outgained St. Scholastica in total yardage (377-311), but couldn’t stop them when it mattered most, as the Saints scored all four times they visited the red zone. St. Scholastica (1-0) got on the board first on an 11 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Harper to Andrew Smith midway through the opening quarter. Ripon (0-1) answered with a one-yard TD plunge by quarterback Stephen Covalt. St. Scholastica grabbed another lead early in the second quarter when Chris Gassert found the end zone from five yards out. Twenty seconds later, Ripon scored a touchdown of their own when Covalt found Tom Sawyer for a 70-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the ensuing drive, but the extra point was no good, keeping St. Scholastica in front. The Saints clung to that one-point lead until the final minute of the half, which saw them score 14 points. With 42 seconds left in the second quarter, Nick Murphy caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Harper. After Ripon fumbled the ensuing kickoff, St. Scholastica took full advantage, going 32 yards in five plays, which was capped by Harper’s third touchdown toss of the day with eight seconds left in the half. Ripon cut into that lead in the third quarter, as Covalt scored his second TD of the game, again finding paydirt from one yard away. The extra point was blocked however, keeping St. Scholastica’s lead at nine points. The Red Hawks made things very interesting in the final quarter, scoring on a 13-yard run by Sawyer and adding a two-point conversion by Eric Hussin to cut the lead to one. They would have one final chance, getting the ball back at their own 48 yard line with just under two minutes remaining, but two incompletions and two runs later, they turned the ball over on downs, allowing St. Scholastica to escape with the victory. Starting the first game of his career at a position other than quarterback, Sawyer finished with four catches for 105 yards and 60 yards on eight carries. Covalt added a team-high 69 yards rushing on 19 carries, while com- pleting 10-of-16 passes for 156 yards. Another former quarterback, Decker Thompson, also had an immediate im- pact at his new position, recording an interception in the first-ever start at safety for the senior, while also making four tackles and breaking up another pass. Freshman Vince Stensrud also made his presence felt with two sacks in his first collegiate game. St. Scholastica was led by Gassert’s 108 yards on 14 carries (7.7 ypc). Harper added 38 yards on 12 carries, while also completing 16-of-32 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Seven different receivers caught at least one pass for the Saints. The Red Hawks will try to reverse their fortunes next weekend in their home opener against Rockford University. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon.

Game #2: Sept. 13, 2014 vs. Rockford University

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks treated their home fans to a 24-14 victory in their 2014 season opener Saturday afternoon, thanks in large part to their defensive unit. Ripon scored 14 of their points off turnovers, as Logan Will and Gage Ferkey each made critical interceptions that set up a short field for their offense. The Red Hawks also sacked Rockford’s quarterback five times, which is the team’s most in a game since the 2010 season, while holding the Regents to 293 total yards, including just 92 on the ground. “I was proud of our players today,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “They responded to some adversity throughout the game, but played hard and got stronger as the game went on.” As good as the defense was as a whole, it took them a little while to get their feet under them. Rockford (1-1) attacked the Red Hawks (1-1) with a 52-yard completion on the game’s opening play, which was followed two plays later by a Pete Berry touchdown from one yard out. That would be all the scoring until midway through the second quarter when Ripon got on the board with a nine-yard run by Eric Hussin on a drive that started at Rock- ford’s 17-yard line thanks to Will’s interception. After a missed extra point, Rockford built an eight-point lead on the ensuing possession, taking the ball 74 yards in seven plays, capped by a nine-yard touchdown run by Kendrick Cooley. The Red Hawks started their next possession with just over one minute remaining, but proceeded to march 64 yards on seven plays and scoring on a four-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Covalt to Hussin with 11 seconds left in the half. Covalt completed the two-point conversion to Connor Greenwald to tie the score at 14 as the teams headed to the locker room. It didn’t take long for the Red Hawks to grab their first lead of the contest, ending the opening drive of the second half with a 21-yard field goal by Jordan Remsza. From there, Ripon’s defense took over, as they did not allow a second-half point for the second consecutive game, and allowed just 95 yards after halftime. Four of Rock- ford’s seven second-half possessions ended in a punt, with two turned over on downs and the other ending in an interception. Ripon was able to get some breathing room in the fourth quarter when Covalt scored on a one-yard touch- down plunge, which was set up by Ferkey’s 36-yard interception return to the four-yard line. In addition to Ferkey’s interception, he also recorded a team-high 10 tackles, to go along with half a sack. Brandon Bartel recorded three of the team’s five sacks, including two on back-to-back plays late in the game. Aus- tin Schleisner also recorded a sack, to go along with his seven tackles, while Vince Stensrud increased his season sack total to 2.5 with half a sack against Rockford. “The defensive linemen that we have this year are very athletic and have great speed,” Ernst said. “Having a great three-man front that can do some good things makes it easy to call a defense.” Offensively, Ripon was led by Hussin who, in addition to his two touchdowns, rushed for a career-high 130 yards on just eight carries (16.2 ypc), while also catching two passes for 25 yards. Covalt added 101 rushing yards, while also completing 7-of-17 passes for 83 yards. “That was a pretty good effort by Hussin today,” Ernst said. “It shows what kind of athlete he is and we’re looking forward to him having a great senior year.” Rockford was led by Berry’s 67 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Andrew Stochl completed 17-of-35 passes for 201 yards. The Red Hawks will get next weekend off due to their bye week, before hosting Cornell College on Sep- tember 27 in what will also serve as Ripon’s Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field. “We really need a bye week right now because we’re pretty banged up,” Ernst said. “The week off is cer- tainly going to help us a lot.”

Game #3: Sept. 27, 2014 vs. Cornell College

RIPON, Wis. - Cornell College put a damper on Ripon’s 2014 Homecoming celebration Saturday after- noon, defeating the Red Hawks 43-24 in a game that saw them build a 33-point halftime lead. The Rams out- gained Ripon 412-367 in total offensive yards, while converting both of the Red Hawk’s turnovers into 14-first half points. “We felt like we were ready for this game and we had a good week of practice, but when it came time for the game, we just did not play well in the first half,” Ripon College Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We didn’t do the things we needed to do in order to get a victory.” In what was the two teams’ first meeting since the 1997 season, Cornell wasted no time displaying their of- fensive attack, as they scored on their first five possessions and six of the seven times they had the ball in the first half. They started with a 24-yard field goal on their opening drive, which saw Ripon’s Jordan Remsza answer with a 26-yarder of his own on the ensuing possession. Cornell (1-1) then took the ball 70 yards in six plays, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Stennes to Ben Knake to give the Rams a lead that they would never relinquish. The Rams defense then got into the action with a 36-yard fumble return by Stephen Ruiz to give his team a 16-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cornell scored three more times in the second quarter, twice on runs by Preston Ritchie and once on a four-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Brown to Riley Bell. Ripon (1-2) fumbled the ball six times on the day, but turned one of those into six points for themselves. After a fumbled pitch inside the five-yard line early in the third quarter, Eric Hussin fell on the ball in the end zone for the score to give Ripon their first touchdown of the contest. Cornell would get those seven points back later in the quarter when Brown found Martin Arispe for a 25-yard TD pass. The Red Hawks began to show signs of life in the final quarter, as Tom Sawyer found Zach Rinehart for a 12-yard score to cap an 11-play, 58-yard drive. Connor Greenwald then found paydirt with just under 12 minutes to play to cut Cornell’s lead to 19, but time would run out on a Ripon comeback. “I was pleased that we responded well and played better in the second half, as we’ve done all season, but we’re really not interested in morale victories,” said Ernst. Stephen Covalt led Ripon’s rushing attack with 103 yards on 20 carries (5.2 ypc), but the Red Hawks finished with a season-low 216 rushing yards as a team. Sawyer, who came on in relief of Covalt at quarterback, completed 9-of-19 yards for 98 yards and a score. Nathan Silloway led the Red Hawks with six catches for 60 yards. Defensively, Brandon Bartel recorded his fourth sack of the year in just his third collegiate game. He also caused a fumble, which was recovered by Decker Thompson. Austin Schleisner led the team with 12 tackles, while Dakotah Kirchenwitz recovered a fumble that he also forced, and junior Bradley Knoblock grabbed the first inter- ception of his Red Hawks career. Kyle Stennes and Daniel Brown proved to be a two-headed monster at quarterback for the Rams, combin- ing to complete 19-of-23 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Knake was the game’s top receiver, catch- ing 12 passes for 122 yards and a score. Ritchie finished the game with 134 yards on 21 carries (6.3 ypc). “We did not play a full four quarters today and we have yet to do so in any of our three games,” Ernst said. “That is a concern of mine and is something we’re going to address so that we can get better as a team.” The Red Hawks will try to regroup next week when they’ll travel to Illinois College to play the Blueboys. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.

Game #4: Oct. 4, 2014 at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Illinois College entered the weekend as the highest scoring team in the Midwest Conference (48 ppg), but Ripon didn’t back down for much of Saturday’s game. The Red Hawks held the Blue- boys to just seven first half points, before Illinois College pulled away with two third quarter touchdowns that proved to be the difference in IC’s 21-6 victory. Despite Illinois College’s scoring pedigree, it was Ripon (1-3) that got on the scoreboard first when Jordan Remsza kicked a 38-yard field goal mid-way through the first quarter. After the two teams traded punts, Illinois College (2-2) put together a four-play, 42-yard scoring drive that resulted in a 20-yard run by quarterback Michael Bates. Neither team scored again until six minutes left in the second quarter when Remsza knocked a 35-yarder through the uprights, pulling the Red Hawks to within one, which is where the score would stay until after half- time. Illinois College extended their lead to eight with just under nine minutes left in the third quarter when Bates found Bryce Heaton for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Dakota Lammy would give the Blueboys further breath- ing room later in the quarter, scoring on a three-yard run. Ripon’s defense tried to keep the Red Hawks in the game, recording two interceptions and three fumble recoveries in the second half, but the offense couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone. The Red Hawks gained 213 yards of total offense, with 149 of those coming on the ground. Connor Gre- enwald led the team with 45 yards on eight carries (5.6 ypc). The Ripon defense yielded 494 yards of total offense, but forced five Blueboys turnovers. Dakotah Kirch- enwitz intercepted two passes while tying Remsza for the team lead in tackles (9). Bradley Knoblock also intercept- ed a pass, his second in as many games, to go along with five tackles (all solo) and one forced fumble. Illinois College was led by Lammy’s 114 yards on 27 carries, while Bates added 78 yards on 11 totes. Bates also completed 17-of-29 passes for 267 yards. Ripon will now wipe the slate clean, as they’ll play their first conference game of the season on Saturday in their first meeting with Macalester since 2005. Saturday’s game will begin at 1 p.m. in Ripon and will double as Ripon Youth Football Appreciation Day at Ingalls Field.

Game #5: Oct. 11, 2014 vs. Macalester College

RIPON, Wis. - Macalester’s first-ever Midwest Conference North Division game didn’t go as Ripon had hoped, as the Red Hawks lost to the Scots 28-20 Saturday afternoon to extend their current losing streak to three games. Ripon was also outgained in total yardage (470-329), as Macalester finished with 274 yards rushing and 196 yards through the air. This also marks the first time Macalester has defeated the Red Hawks in four meetings, the last one coming in 2005. The Scots (4-1, 1-0 MWC North) didn’t waste any time, taking the opening drive of the game 67 yards in 13 plays, capping off a six-minute drive with a 19-yard run by Zandy Stowell. That would be a sign of things to come, as they possessed the ball for nearly 37 minutes, including 13 of the 15 minutes in the second quarter. Ma- calester’s second touchdown came on their second drive of the day, ending in a 41-yard reception by Tre Nowac- zynski from Samson Bialostok, which put Ripon in an early 14-0 deficit. After Macalester used the majority of the second quarter on one drive, going 86 yards in 23 plays and us- ing up all but two and a half minutes of the quarter, the Scots were stopped on a fourth-down play inside Ripon’s 10-yard line. Two plays later, the Red Hawks (1-4, 0-1 MWC North) found the end zone for the first time when Tom Sawyer found Nathan Silloway for a 86-yard touchdown reception just before halftime to cut Macalester’s lead in half on what is tied for the fifth-longest pass play in school history. Midway through the third quarter, Ripon would tie the score at 14 when Stephen Covalt found paydirt from a yard out, capping a 10-play, 54 yard drive. Macalester answered with a touchdown drive on the ensuing possession, which saw Stowell score for the second time on the day to give the Scots the lead for good. They added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach on an 11-yard scramble by Bialostok. “We just have to keep working hard to become a better team,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We’re very frustrated with what has happened this season, but we’re going to stay the course and continue to work hard and get better every day.” The Red Hawks were led by Connor Greenwald’s 44 yards on 11 carries. Eric Hussin added 42 yards on just six totes (7.0 ypc), while adding a team-high five receptions for 34 yards. Sawyer proved to be effective at quarterback, completing 8-of-11 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Ripon was led by Austin Schleisner and Jordan Remsza, whom recorded 10 and nine tackles, respectively. For Macalester, Bialostok stole the show, completing 12-of-29 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 16 times for 145 yards and another score. Stowell added 115 yards on 27 carries (4.3 ypc), with Nowaczyn- ski leading the team in receiving with four catches for 76 yards. Ripon will hope to get things turned around next weekend when they travel to St. Norbert College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in De Pere, Wis. and can be seen live at,http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.

Game #6: Oct. 18, 2014 at St. Norbert College

DE PERE, Wis. - After falling behind 13-0 to St. Norbert College Saturday, the Red Hawks rallied to cut that lead to three in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get closer than that, losing to the Green Knights, 13-10. That marks the third time in six games that Ripon has not allowed a single point in the second half. The Red Hawks also won the turnover battle for the third time in four games, forcing three St. Norbert miscues. St. Norbert (3-3, 1-1 MWC North) got on the board with eight minutes left in the opening quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Randy Hill, who added a 31-yarder early in the second quarter. The Green Knights’ only touchdown came four minutes before halftime on a one-yard plunge by Zach Broberg, capping a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Ripon’s first points came with five and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter when Connor Green- wald converted his first career field goal from 22 yards out, after the Red Hawks’ drive stalled on St. Norbert’s five- yard line. Ripon (1-5, 0-2 MWC North) made things interesting in the fourth quarter when Skylar Liebzeit scored his first touchdown of the season from five yards out to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive and trim SNC’s lead to three. The Red Hawks had one last opportunity to tie or take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but after putting together a 75-yard drive, St. Norbert recovered a Ripon fumble on SNC’s 16-yard line with four minutes remain- ing, ending any hope of a comeback. Connor Greenwald led the Red Hawks with 42 yards rushing on 11 carries. Tom Sawyer added 29 yards on six carries (4.8 ypc), while also catching two passes for 24 yards. Nathan Silloway led the team in receiving yards for the fifth consecutive game, making three catches for 75 yards, including a 52-yarder. Defensively, Ripon was led by Austin Schleisner’s 11 tackles (10 solo). Dakotah Kirchenwitz added nine tackles (eight solo), to go along with one sack and one fumble recovery, giving him a takeaway in three of Ripon’s last four games. St. Norbert outgained Ripon in total yardage 384-294, while also achieving eight more first downs (20-12). Making his first start of the season, quarterback J.T.Crosby led the Green Knights with 111 yards on 21 carries (5.3 ypc), while completing 10-of-26 passes for 175 yards. Zach Klarkowski led the Green Knights defense with 12 tackles, including 0.5 sacks. Things won’t get easier for the Red Hawks next week when they’ll play conference-leading and undefeated Carroll University (6-0, 2-0 MWC North) on Saturday. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live on,http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.

Game #7: Oct. 25, 2014 vs. Carroll University

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon went toe-to-toe with the top team in the Midwest Conference Saturday afternoon, losing to Carroll University, 48-14, as the Pioneers outgained the Red Hawks 471-297 in total offense. Carroll’s 369 rushing yards were 72 more than Ripon had rushing and passing combined., The scoring started early and often for the Pioneers (7-0, 3-0 MWC), as they took the opening drive 57 yards in five plays, capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Burlingame to Jordan Blank to break the score- less tie less than two minutes into the game. Carroll added a second touchdown late in the opening quarter when Kevin Jennings caught a 20-yard touchdown from Burlingame to double their lead.,The second quarter belonged to Jennings, who caught his second and third touchdowns of the game from 19 and four-yards, respectively, giving Carroll a 28-0 halftime lead. Ripon (1-6, 0-3 MWC) finally grabbed some momentum on the opening drive of the second half, going 64 yards on five plays and keyed by a 40-yard Connor Greenwald run on the first play of the third quarter, but a fumble deep in Carroll territory would stall that drive. Any momentum that Ripon may have had was then taken away completely when Lamont Williams took the very next play 87-yards to the end zone to give the Pioneers a 34-0 advantage. Two and a half minutes later, Williams’ teammate Daniel Arden had a long run of his own, scor- ing a 56-yard touchdown for a 41-point lead. The Red Hawks finally got on the board with 13 minutes to play in the game on a three-yard run by Na- than Kuehl. That excitement was quickly taken away on the ensuing kickoff, which Williams returned 90 yards for Carroll’s final points. Greenwald led Ripon in rushing with 65 yards on six carries (10.8 ypc), while Eric Hussin added 55 yards on 10 carries (5.5 ypc). Stephen Covalt finished with 44 yards and a one-yard touchdown plunge, while also pass- ing for 97 yards. Defensively, the Red Hawks were led by Brandon Latzig’s eight tackles, while Logan Will record- ed his third interception of the season, which is tied for the team lead. “We just have to keep working hard and try to improve,” Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We’re very young and beat up in a lot of areas, so we’re going to have to get our players ready for next week and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.” Williams led Carroll’s rushing attack with 195 yards on 17 carries (11.5 ypc), while Arden gained 112 yards on just five totes (22.4 ypc). Burlingame proved to be very efficient at the quarterback position, with four of his seven completions going for touchdowns. The Pioneers added two interceptions on defense, while also recovering one fumble. Ripon’s current five-game losing streak is the team’s longest since 1986, when they lost six straight. They will try to snap that streak next weekend when they’ll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Strong Stadium in Beloit and can be seen live at,http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.

Game #8: Nov. 1, 2014 at Beloit College

BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon snapped their longest losing streak in 28 years Saturday afternoon at five games, defeating Beloit College 35-28. Despite turning the ball over five times, the Red Hawks never trailed in the game, outgaining the Buccaneers in total yardage, 434-239, while holding Beloit to just 12 first downs. In what was the 100th meeting between the two teams, Ripon earned their ninth consecutive win over Beloit. The Red Hawks (2-6, 1-3 MWC) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking the opening drive 75 yards in 14 plays, which culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Stephen Covalt. Beloit (2-6, 0-4 MWC) tied the score at seven early in the second quarter when Michael Nolden scored on a 17-yard reception from Evan Phillips. After a three-and-out on Beloit’s ensuing drive, the Red Hawks got the ball back and drove 67 yards on five plays, capped by a four-yard TD run by Covalt, giving Ripon a 21-7 halftime lead. That lead vanished in a 20-second span mid-way through the third quarter. After the Buccaneers cut it to a seven-point lead on a 12-yard interception return for a score, they recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. One play later, Beloit was in the end zone again, as Kam Sallee tied the score on a 26-yard run. As they did for much of the day, Ripon had an answer, marching 70 yards on eight plays on the ensuing drive, which was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Covalt to Hibbard. The Red Hawks extended their lead to 14 mid-way through the final quarter when Eric Hussin was on the receiving end of a seven-yard touchdown pass from Covalt. Beloit pulled within seven once more with just under four minutes remaining on a 43-yard touchdown from Phillips to Nolden, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the day. Ripon controlled the ball for more than 38 minutes, while converting 12-of-16 third-down attempts. Covalt led the Red Hawks with 131 yards on 28 carries (4.7 ypc) and two scores, while also completing 6-of-10 passes fro 97 yards and two more scores.
