Game #1: Sept. 2 vs. Concordia-Chicago

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College football team nearly erased a 22-point second half deficit against Concordia-Chicago Saturday afternoon, but ran out of time, falling to the Cougars 28-20 in what was the season- opener for both teams. Trailing 28-6 mid-way through the third quarter, the Red Hawks were able to regroup thanks to Mother Nature, as a lightning storm forced both teams to the locker room for the next hour and 15 minutes. When the Red Hawks came back onto the field, they were a more focused unit, scoring a touchdown a minute and a half after the delay on a 19-yard touchdown pass from freshman Julian Patton to Cameron Mignone to cut the lead to 28-13. Ripon’s defense then held Concordia to a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and received a good bounce on the punt, which netted just 11 yards to set the Red Hawks up in great field position. Eleven plays and 30 yards later, the Red Hawks were in the end zone again, scoring on a one-yard plunge by Tyler VanDeVelde, which cut the lead to eight with 13 minutes remaining. The Red Hawks defense would make three more defensive stands in the game, getting the ball back for its offense each time, but a pair of late interceptions thwarted any comeback visions they may have had. “I was very proud of the way our players battled and never gave up, which shows the character of our play- ers,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We made some adjustments during the game and played better in the second half, so we just have to build on that and be more consistent in the future. Ripon out-gained Concordia in total offense, 396-311, including 340-102 on the ground, but the four Red Hawks’ turnovers were just too much to overcome. Patton led Ripon with 107 yards on 16 carries (6.7 ypc), which included a 24-yard touchdown run. Entering the game due to an injury to Ripon’s starting quarterback Sam Shroyer, Patton also completed four passes for 39 yards and the touchdown to Mignone. VanDeVelde added 90 yards on 14 carries (6.4 ypc), while Cody Chase carried the ball eight times for 74 yards (9.2 ypc). Defensively, Ripon was led by Lane Barnes’ 13 tackles. Hunter Gruenwald added 11 tackles, while senior Brandon Bartel recorded seven tackles, including one sack to give him 14.5 in his career, which ranks third in school history, just 2.5 shy of the school record. Concordia-Chicago’s quarterback Shane Virnala completed 20-of-30 passes for 209 yards and four touch- down, three of which went to Leroy Bridges, with the other caught by Ryan Allison. Lance Moise gained 83 yards on 25 carries to lead the Cougars. Ripon will try to get into the win column next weekend when they’ll host UW-LaCrosse on Saturday at 1 p.m. That game will be played at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ ripon/.

Game #2: Sept. 9 vs. UW-La Crosse

RIPON, Wis. - For three quarters Saturday afternoon, Ripon’s football team proved that it could hang with UW-La Crosse, staying within shouting distance of the Eagles, who took a 28-14 lead into the final quarter. That final period was all UW-La Crosse however, as they scored 17 unanswered points to put the game away and secure a 45-14 victory. Ripon out-gained UW-L on the ground, 161-141, but lost the turnover battle 3-1, and al- lowed the Eagles to pass for 334 yards. UW-La Crosse (2-0) jumped on the scoreboard early with a 28-yard touchdown from Tarek Yaeggi to Nick Holcomb to cap the game’s opening drive, which went 76 yards in eight plays. After the two teams traded punts, the Red Hawks (0-2) got the ball back and showed the Eagles that a win would not come easy. Freshman quarter- back Julian Patton, who was making his first collegiate start, scored Ripon’s first points with nine minutes left in the opening quarter when he faked a handoff and ran untouched up the middle for a 64-yard touchdown. Less than a minute later, Holcomb was in the end zone for the second time in the quarter, catching an- other pass from Yaeggi and going 72 yards for the score to make the score 14-7. A one-yard TD plunge by Trenten Smith put UW-L up by 14 heading into the second quarter, which began with another Holcomb touchdown, this time going for 32 yards and a 28-7 lead. Ripon battled back however, scoring on a nine-yard run by Patton to cut the lead to 14. Less than a minute later, the Red Hawks would get the ball back in their own territory, thanks to an interception by Cameron Gruen- wald, but they couldn’t capitalize, turning the ball over on the very next play. On the first drive of the second half, Ripon pushed the ball into UW-La Crosse territory again, but anoth- er turnover thwarted the Red Hawks’ threat. Neither team would score a single point in the third quarter, as both defenses stepped up. In the final quarter, UW-La Crosse was able to pull away, scoring on a 29-yard field goal, while Holcomb notched his fourth TD of the game on a 38-yard receptions, and Smith ran for a 20-yard score for his second touchdown of the day. “Our guys played really well for three quarters, but we got worn down by a team that is very big and strong,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “UW-La Crosse is a very good team that plays in arguably the tough- est conference in Division-III, so I thought this was a good test for us, and I was pleased with the way our team battled and competed.” Patton led Ripon with 88 yards on 22 carries (4.0 ypc), while also completing four passes for 33 yards. De- fensively, the Red Hawks were led by Gruenwald, who finished with 10 tackles (nine solo) and one pass breakup, in addition to his INT. Senior Brandon Bartel recorded a sack for the second consecutive game, giving him 15.5 for his career, which ranks third in school history and is 1.5 shy of the school record. Yaeggi completed 22-of-33 passes for 334 yards for UW-La Crosse. All four of his touchdowns went to Hol- comb, who finished with 10 grabs for 263 yards. The Eagles defense recorded five sacks in the game. Ripon will have a bye next week when they’ll try to regroup and get healthy for the remainder of the sea- son, which will resume on September 23 at Knox College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/index.htm.

Game #3: Sept. 23 at Knox College

GALESBURG, Ill. - Ripon and Knox combined for just 23 first downs and 499 yards of total offense Sat- urday afternoon, as the two teams were locked in a defensive battle for most of the day. In the end though, Knox walked away with the win, getting out to a 13-0 halftime lead, before holding on for a 13-6 victory. Thirty-one percent of Knox’s 241 yards from scrimmage came on the second play of the game, as Matt McCaffrey found Malik Hamilton for a 74-yard touchdown pass less than one minute into the contest. Knox (3-0) added to their lead in the second quarter when McCaffrey found Hamilton again for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Those two plays marked Hamilton’s only two catches in the game. After trailing 13-0 at halftime, Ripon’s defense continued to buckle down and give the Red Hawks a chance. With six minutes left in the third quarter, Ripon’s offense seized that opportunity, scoring from 11 yards out on a TD pass from Sam Shroyer to Cameron Mignone. Ripon (0-3) had a couple more chances to make something happen in the final quarter, driving the ball inside Knox’s 30-yard line on two separate occasions, but both drives would ultimately stall. Julian Patton led Ripon with 65 yards on eight carries (8.1 ypc), while Tyler VanDeVelde added 35 yards on six carries (5.8 ypc). Shroyer completed 5-of-9 passes for 46 yards and his touchdown to Mignone, who led the Red Hawks with three grabs for 66 yards. Defensively, Ripon was led by Hunter Gruenwald’s seven tackles and one forced fumble, which was recov- ered by Bennett Groves. Senior Vince Stensrud recorded the team’s only sack, giving him 11 for his career, which is tied for ninth in program history. McCaffrey led Knox with 41 yards on 11 carries, while also completing 14-of-21 passes for 176 yards and the two scores to Hamilton. The loss snaps an 18-game winning streak against Knox, which dated back to 1987, which was four years before current Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst took over the program. Ripon still leads the all-time series 41-6. Ripon will try to break into the win column next weekend when they’ll host Grinnell College. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ ripon/.

Game #4: Sept. 30 vs. Grinnell College

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon picked up its first win of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon, defeating Grinnell College in dominating fashion by a score of 55-0 for their first shutout victory at home since 2009. The Red Hawks held a 30-8 advantage in first downs, while out-gaining the Pioneers in total offensive yards 445-139. Ripon gained 364 rushing yards, while holding Grinnell to just 57 yards on the ground, which was a big reason Grinnell averaged just 2.7 yards per play throughout the game. “I was really proud of the entire team today,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We had great intensity during practice all week, and our players really responded in all three phases of the game. This was a total team victory. The Red Hawks (1-3) set the tone early, taking the opening drive 57 yards on seven plays, capped by a one- yard run by Julian Patton, which gave Ripon its first lead of the season. Patton added a second touchdown later in the quarter, capping an eight-play, 67-yard drive. Patton added a third TD early in the second quarter, scoring on a 24-yard run. Ripon would go into halftime with a 28-0 lead after Patton found Tyler VanDeVelde for a 13-yard scoring strike just before intermission. Ripon continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring another touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter when VanDeVelde scored on a two-yard run to put Ripon up 35-0. The Red Hawks scored twice more in the quarter on runs by Brandon Barnes and Sam Shroyer, who would add a second TD run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. Patton finished the game with 83 yards on 16 carries (5.2 ypc), including three TDs, while also completing 5-of-7 passes for 81 yards and a score. Barnes and VanDeVelde each added 62 yards on the ground, while Brett Garst gained 59 yards on eight carries (7.4 ypc). Every single healthy member of Ripon’s team played in the game. “It’s so much fun to see every player get into the game,” Ernst said. “Everyone works hard in practice throughout the week, so I was really happy to see them all get some playing time.” Defensively, Ripon recorded four sacks and four interceptions. Lane Barnes led the way with two sacks, to go along with a team-high nine tackles, while forcing a fumble and breaking up one pass. Brock Schneider record- ed 1.5 sacks, with Kaden Graham posting the team’s other sack. Cameron Gruenwald intercepted two passes on the day, while Hunter Gruenwald and Bennett Groves each recorded one INT. “We have a very good defense that is very coachable,” Ernst said. “They hold each other accountable, but they have fun, and they’re playing very well right now.” Grinnell (1-3) sustained just two drives of more than 40 yards, while three of their five first half posses- sions ended in an interception. The Pioneers were led by Carson Dunn, who gained 60 yards on 19 carries. De- fensively, Grinnell was led by Ryan Slager, who recorded 19 tackles, adding to his conference-leading 14 tackles per game. The Red Hawks will try to use this momentum next weekend as they’ll open conference play against St. Norbert College in what will be Ripon’s annual Homecoming celebration. That game will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/. “This win will give us some confidence,” Ernst said. “We’ll have a tough opponent next week, but I think today’s game will give us a lot of energy going into next week, and I think we’ll play well against St. Norbert.” Next Saturday’s game will follow the grand opening of the newly-renovated Willmore Center on Ripon’s campus in which there will be an open gym beginning at 8 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. There will also be a Homecoming Tailgate Picnic from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. across the street from Willmore Center on Lower Sadolff. After the game, there will be “The Fifth Quarter”, which will be held at Bovay’s Study Bar & Mer- cantile on Watson Street, featuring live music.

Game #5: Oct. 7 vs. St. Norbert College (Homecoming)

RIPON, Wis. - One week after Ripon’s defense pitched a shutout in a 55-0 win against Grinnell, the Red Hawks were on the other end of a shutout, losing their annual Homecoming game 17-0 against St. Norbert. The two teams combined for just 353 yards of total offense, with each team limited to less than 100 yards rushing. After a scoreless first quarter, St. Norbert (3-2, 1-0 MWC) broke into the scoring column with a 27-yard field goal by Spenser Thompson-Meyers two minutes into the second quarter, capping a six-play, 20-yard drive. Neither team could muster much offense after that, combining for 55 yards on the next seven possessions com- bined. St. Norbert added to their lead in the third quarter, scoring the game’s first touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Jack Becker to Matt Galanopoulos, which capped a three-play, 44-yard drive. Both offenses continued to be stifled into the fourth quarter, but St. Norbert was able to put the game away on a three-yard touchdown pass from Becker to Samuel Staehling with five minutes remaining. Ripon (1-4, 0-1 MWC) was led by Brent Anderson’s 38 yards on two carries, including the Red Hawks’ biggest play of the game, a 27-yard scamper. Tyler VanDeVelde added 27 yards, while Julian Patton rushed for 21 yards. Ripon’s defense was stout all day, led by Armando Mosqueda’s career-high 11 tackles (eight solo), with two going for a loss. The Red Hawks recorded three sacks, with Lane Barnes, Brandon Bartel, and Ethan Hoffman do- ing the honors. That gives Bartel 16.5 career sacks, which is just 0.5 shy of the school record. St. Norbert was led by Elijah Fort’s 48 yards on 13 carries. Becker completed 16-of-29 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while Staehling led the Green Knights with six receptions for 39 yards. The Red Hawks will try to bounce back next weekend when they’ll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Beloit, Wis. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.

Ripon continued to pile up the points in the second half, scoring on a 13-yard run by Patton just three minutes into the third quarter. After Beloit scored on an 11-yard pass from Sposito to Jamiel Garcia, Ripon scored on another Patton run, this time from five yards out. In a game that featured nearly every scoring play imaginable, Macalester scored 21 points off turnovers, while out-gaining the Red Hawks in total yardage, 432-222. Ripon out-gained Macalester on the ground, 127-117, marking the 12th consecutive game in which Ripon has finished with more rushing yards than their opponent. Macalester (5-2, 3-0 MWC North) struck first, going 86 yards in 10 plays on the game’s opening drive, which was capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Stephan. Mid-way through the quarter, Ripon got on the board on a career-long 43-yard field goal by Kyle Jobke. Later in the period, Macalester took a 9-3 lead on a safety after Ripon pounced on their own fumble in their end zone. Three minutes into the second half, Macalester added another TD on a 75-yard pass from Christian Adams to Sam Bordo. Eight minutes later, the Scots took a 21-7 lead when Adams found Alec Beatty for a TD from 13 yards out. Ripon’s Cameron Mignone then proceeded to take the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a score and a 21-10 halftime deficit. That marks Ripon’s first kick return for a touchdown since the 2008 season, when Josh Kraemer accomplished that feat twice. In the third quarter, the two teams traded scores, with Macalester taking a 28-10 lead on a 19-yard touch- down pass from Adams to Jack Streibich. Ripon answered later in the period on a three-yard run by Brandon Barnes, capping an 11-play, 66-yard drive. The scoring didn’t really get started until the final quarter, which saw 33 of the game’s 78 points scored. Macalester took a 34-17 lead in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter when Adams found Streibich for a 21-yard score. On the ensuing possession, Macalester blocked a Ripon punt, recovering it in the end zone for a 41-17 lead. Reese Bresson was the player that recovered the punt for a TD, and he would score for a second time three minutes later on a 16-yard TD pass from Johnny Bice. Shephard Kuranda and Carlos Pittman rounded out the scoring in the game’s final minutes, catching touchdown passes of 34 and 39 yards, respectively, from Griffin McNeal. Julian Patton led Ripon with 42 yards on seven carries (6.0 ypc), while Barnes finished with 41 yards on a team-high 10 carries (4.1 ypc). McNeal completed 2-of-3 passes for 73 yards, with both of his completions going for touchdowns. Ripon’s defense recorded two sacks on the day by Hunter Gruenwald and Lane Barnes, extending the team’s streak to 10 games with at least one sack. Game #8: Oct. 28 vs. University of Chicago

RIPON, Wis. - In what was a game of momentum shifts and twists and turns, Ripon defeated the University of Chicago 36-29, erasing a 15-point deficit in the final 13 minutes, highlighted by the game-winning touchdown with 23 seconds remaining. Chicago out-gained Ripon in total offense (355-334), but Ripon forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, all of which came in the game’s final quarter, which proved to be the difference. “I’m so proud of all of our players and coaches,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “This may have been the best fourth quarter we’ve ever played. Twenty-two points in the fourth quarter shows the character that our players have.” In addition to owning the fourth quarter, Ripon (3-5, 2-2 MWC) also owned the first, getting out to an early 14-0 lead. The Red Hawks broke a scoreless tie less than one minute into the contest, as quarterback Julian Patton scored from three yards out, which was set up by a 53-yard run up the middle by Brandon Barnes. Ripon doubled their lead with just under 10 minutes left in the opening period when Patton found Cameron Mignone for a five-yard touchdown, capping a 12-play, 65-yard drive. The middle two quarters belonged to Chicago (4-4, 2-2 MWC), as they proceeded to score 29 consecutive points. They first got on the board with eight and a half minutes left in the second quarter on an eight-yard TD run by Chandler Carroll. The Maroons would cut Ripon’s lead to one just before halftime on a 14-yard pass from Campbell Garrett to Andrew Falk, which was followed by a failed extra point. Chicago’s first lead came at the end of the opening drive of the second half, which saw the Maroons march 61 yards in four plays, capped by a 32-yard touchdown from Garrett to Riley Trettel. Carroll added his second TD of the game mid-way through the third quarter on a 41-yard reception from Garrett. Mike Kurzydlowski added a 31-yard field goal to put Chicago up 29-14 with four minutes left in the third. Ripon took the ensuing possession 73 yards in 13 plays, culminating in another three-yard TD by Patton with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. That’s when things got interesting, thanks to Ripon’s defense stepping up in a big way. With six and a half minutes left, Lane Barnes stepped in front of a Garrett pass and returned it 61 yards the other way for a Red Hawks pick-six. One two-point conversion later (from Patton to Mignone), and the game was tied at 29. After the two teams traded possessions, Ripon’s offense got the ball back on their own 41-yard-line with 1:05 remaining. After a pair of rushes, and a 25-yard reception by Mignone, Patton found Sam Shroyer streaking down the sideline for the game-winning 26-yard touchdown. That marks Shroyer’s first career reception, after the sophomore began this season as the starting quarterback. “Our players made great plays,” Ernst said. “When you play with emotion and passion, you’re going to be able to make those type of plays. It was great to see our players have as much fun as they did and get this win.” Brandon Barnes led all players with a career-high 98 rushing yards on 22 carries (4.5 ypc), while Brent Anderson gained 91 yards on five carries (18.2 ypc). Patton rushed for 45 yards and two TDs, while completing 4-of-11 passes for 71 yards and two more scores. In addition to Lane Barnes’ pick-six, Ripon also got interceptions from Cameron Gruenwald, Jared Ze- man, and Armando Mosqueda, which sealed the win with eight seconds remaining. Brandon Bartel recorded one sack to give him 17.5 for his career, which breaks the school record, which had stood for 20 years. “Brandon has been one of the top defensive linemen in the conference the last four years,” Ernst said. “He is very tough to block, has a great work ethic, and is one of those players that always has his motor running.” Bartel is one of 12 seniors that saw their final game on the Ingalls Field turf be a memorable one that will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in program history. “It was so much fun to see our seniors go out like they did,” Ernst said. “Our seniors have always provided great leadership and this group is no different. I’m very proud of each and every one of them.” Ripon will try to keep this momentum going next weekend when they’ll face Lawrence University in what is the oldest college football rivalry in the state of Wisconsin for the battle of the Doehling-Heselton trophy. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Banta Bowl in Appleton, Wis.
