Game #1: Sept. 7 vs. Augsburg University

RIPON, Wis. - After a long offseason, Ripon took the gridiron Saturday afternoon, opening their 2019 campaign with a 36-26 loss against Augsburg University. Both defense were stifling early, before Augsburg broke open the game in the second half on their way to 487 yards of total offense, including 296 through the air. Ripon held the edge on the ground, out-gaining Augsburg 189-165, marking the 26th consecutive game the Red Hawks have rushed for more yards in a game than their opponent. After a scoreless first quarter, Ripon broke the tie on a two-yard tochdown run by Austin Bunders with just under 11 minutes to play in the half. Augsburg’s first points came eight minutes later when Quaran Al-Hameed scored on a six-yard run. After the extra point was missed, Augsburg waited until the final play of the half to take their first lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Frisell to Josiah Ferguson. The Auggies added to their lead in the third quarter, scoring 11 points on an eight-yard TD pass from Frisell to Le’Andre Benion, a two-point conversion, and a 31-yard field goal. Augsburg’s streak of 23 consecutive points was snapped on the first play of the fourth quarter when Walter Bryant scored on a 10-yard run to cut the lead to 23-13. Al-Hameed would finish the ensuing drive with a three- yard run and Frisell would find a wide open Andrew Williams for a 72-yard touchdown to put the game away. Ripon never quit however, scoring two late touchdowns, one on an acrobatic 19-yard catch by Kaipo Magsayo, and the other on a three-yard pass from Cormac Madigan to Aaron Landry. “Our youth showed at times today, but I’m proud of the way we finished the game,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We took some lumps today, but it’s going to pay off in the long run because we’ll learn from this.” Madigan led Ripon with 32 yards on seven carries, while Dionisio Herrera carried the ball twice for 31 yards. Bunders, Magsayo, Bryant, and Tyler VanDeVelde also each finished with more than 20 rushing yards. Ma- digan also completed nine passes for 63 yards and two scores. Ripon’s defense was led by Lane Barnes’ 13 tackles and one interception, giving the Red Hawks at least one interception in 11 consecutive games. Caleb Cihlar and Jon Ryback each finished with eight tackles. Augsburg was led by Al-Hameed’s 94 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, while Frisell completed 18- of-33 passes for 322 yards and three scores. The Auggies had eight different receivers record at least one reception, with four players recording at least 47 receiving yards. Ripon will now regroup and get back on the field next weekend when they’ll travel to Finlandia University. That game will begin at Noon Central Time in Hancock, Mich.

Game #2: Sept. 14 at Finlandia University

HANCOCK, Mich. - After a closely contested first quarter, Ripon used 31 second quarter points to take command of the lead Saturday, en route to a 45-12 victory at Finlandia to give the Red Hawks their first win of the season. Ripon out-gained Finlandia in total offense 405-195, which included 376 rushing yards and 6.7 yards per carry. Austin Bunders got the Red Hawks (1-1) on the board first, capping off an 11-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge mid-way through the opening quarter. Finlandia (0-2) scored a TD of their own on the ensuing possession on a two-yard run by DJ Davis, but the extra point was blocked by Lane Barnes, keeping Ripon in the lead. Bunders would add a 43-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, and after a 42-yard field goal by Kyle Jobke, the Red Hawks defense and special teams went to work. With seven minutes to play in the half, Quincy DiLoreto blocked a Finlandia punt deep in Lions territory, which Barnes recovered in the end zone for a score and a 24-6 Ripon lead. After an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cormac Madigan to William Bry- ant extended the Red Hawks’ lead even more, Ripon added another touchdown in the final minutes, as Barnes stripped the ball from a Finlandia ball carrier and scooped up the fumble, returning it four yards for his second touchdown in a six-minute span. That marks the Senior’s seventh career touchdown, despite not playing offense. Ripon took a 38-6 lead into halftime, and coasted from there. The Red Hawks’ only points of the second half came with under two minutes to play on a one-yard run to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Ripon’s potent rushing attack was led by Madigan’s 105 yards on just 10 carries (10.5 ypc), while Bunders added 99 yards on 11 carries (9.0 ypc). McCoy added 62 yards on seven totes (8.9 ypc), and Aaron Landry carried the ball six times for 51 yards (8.5 ypc). Barnes led the Red Hawks’ defensive attack with a game-high 14 tackles (nine solo), including 2.5 for a loss and one sack. That now gives him 231 career tackles, which ranks eighth in program history, just 18 shy of the fifth-highest total. DiLoreto chipped in with nine tackles (four solo), in addition to his blocked punt, while Armando Mosqueda and Tyler Vandehei each finished with seven tackles. Cameron Gruenwald recorded his first interception of the season and 10th of his career, extending Ripon’s streak of consecutive games with an intercep- tion to 12. The Red Hawks will now have a bye week, before getting back on the field September 28 at Illinois Col- lege. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ ripon/.

Game #3: Sept. 28 at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - In a game of peaks and valleys, Ripon lost at Illinois College on Saturday by a score of 28-25. The Red Hawks got out to a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, but couldn’t hold on, despite out- gaining Illinois College in total offense 318-238. Ripon’s defense got the team on the board first, as they tackled Illinois College in the end zone for a safety to break a scoreless tie just five and a half minutes into the contest. The Red Hawks (1-2) extended their lead later in the quarter on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Austin Bunders. Kyle Jobke put Ripon up 12-0 with a career-high 46-yard field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter. Illinois College (1-2) finally got on the board on the ensuing possession when Drew Chance hooked up with Bryce McKinney for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Blueboys took their first lead of the day with five and a half minutes left in the half on a one-yard TD run by Trevor Smalls. Ripon would then grab the lead back on the final play of the half - a 36-yard field goal by Jobke. Both defenses stepped up in the third quarter, which did not consist of an offensive touchdown. However, it was Illinois College’s defense that put up points, returning a Ripon fumble 30 yards for a touchdown mid-way through the quarter for a 21-15 lead. Jobke cut that lead in half in the final minute of the quarter, connecting on a 30-yard field goal, which ties a school record for most field goals made in a single game (3). Illinois College was able to get some breathing room in the fourth quarter, as Smalls scored his second rushing touchdown of the day with nine minutes remaining. After a late Bennett Groves interception set up the Red Hawks with a short field, Cormac Madigan punched it in for a one-yard touchdown to cut the Illinois College lead to three with just under two minutes to play. The ensuing onsides kick was not recovered however, and the Blueboys were able to run out the clock. Ripon gained 198 rushing yards and 120 yards through the air, but also lost three fumbles, which resulted in 15 Illinois College points. The Red Hawks were led by Madigan, who gained 114 yards on 23 carries (5.0 ypc), while also completing 8-of-20 passes for 120 yards. Tyler VanDeVelde added 45 yards on 11 carries (4.1 ypc), while Bunders finished with 26 yards. Seven different Red Hawks caught at least one pass, led by Masyn Ulrich’s two receptions for 39 yards. Ripon’s defense was led by Reece Schreckengust’s 11 tackles, which included three for a loss and 0.5 sacks. Groves and Cameron Gruenwald each recorded an interception, while Aryz Terlaje and Caleb Cihlar had one and 0.5 sacks, respectively. Illinois College was led by Smalls’ 73 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries (4.5 ypc). Drew Chance added 52 rushing yards on 12 carries (4.3 ypc), while also completing eight passes for 98 yards. The Red Hawks will return home next weekend when they’ll host Monmouth College at Ingalls Field. That game will begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.

Game #4: Oct. 5 vs. Monmouth College (Fall Fest)

RIPON, Wis. - Battling both the elements and Monmouth College Saturday afternoon, the Ripon Col- lege football team lost 20-0, with all 20 of Monmouth’s points coming in a seven-minute span in the second quarter. Playing in what was a constant downpour, the two teams combined for just 15 first downs adn 354 yards of total offense, with Ripon holding Monmouth to -13 yards passing, which sets a new school record for fewest passing yards allowed in a single game. After a scoreless first quarter, Monmouth (2-2) recorded their first points of the contest when Connor Graeff blocked a punt, which was scooped up by Brandon Graeff and returned eight yards for the score. The extra point was no good, but the Fighting Scots were back on the scoreboard two minutes later, capitalizing on a Ripon fumble with an 18-yard TD run by Henderson Francois on the very next play. Monmouth capped the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run by Alec Cooley, which finished off a seven-play, 54-yard drive that was set up by a Ripon interception. Ripon (1-3) finished with 164 total yards, with 93 coming on the ground and 71 more coming through the air. They were led by Cormac Madigan, who rushed for 61 yards on 20 carries, while also completing 5-of-15 passes for 71 yards. Tyler VanDeVelde added 27 rushing yards, while Parker Campano recorded game-highs of two recep- tions for 65 yards. The Red Hawks defense was led by Lane Barnes, who recorded seven tackles (all solo), includ- ing three for a loss. “I’m really proud of our players and how they fought for 60 minutes and I think we got better as a football team today against a tough Monmouth team,” Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst said. “We have a very young team, so we’re going to go back to the drawing board and continue to improve.”. Monmouth was led by Francois’ 79 yards on 19 carries, while Devin Lawrence gained 59 yards on just four totes (14.8 ypc). The Fighting Scots’ defense, which was stifling all afternoon, was led by Connor Graeff, who had eight tackles (six solo) and an interception.
