ABERTAY UNIVERSITY ABERTAY ABERTAY UNIVERSITY 2020 UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS A30 We’ve never been afraid to lead the way. We launched the world’s first computer games degree in 1997. We launched the world’s first ethical hacking degree in 2006. We’re the only university in Scotland to offer a range of accelerated, three-year degrees. And our goal has always been to bridge the gap between university and industry, allowing you to enter a modern jobs market with confidence. We’re enormously proud of our first 25 years as a university, but our city centre campus has been home to an educational institution for well over a century. When the maritime industry was big business in the city – around 100 years ago – a replica of a ship’s bridge was built on the roof of the building. With uninterrupted views of the skies over the River Tay and the North Sea beyond, this replica offered the perfect ‘classroom’ for would-be seafarers to learn how to navigate using the stars. This practical, hands-on approach remains fundamental to what we do at Abertay. Our contemporary, ever-evolving degrees have strong links with industry. So whether it’s work placements, guest lectures or networking events, you’ll be in contact with potential employers from the start. We’re a small university, which means we can get to know the real you. Our students are more than just an ID number. In fact, the close relationship between our inspiring staff and brilliant students is a massive part of what makes Abertay so special.

Torrie SCOTTISH BURGH SURVEY 1988 ------------------------------------------------ Contents The Castle Town Defences Churches, Chapels and Religious Houses Commercial and Institutional Organisation Crafts, Industries and Water Supply Harbour Tables of Appendices 2, 3 & 4 THE CASTLE (Site of) NO 4043 3028 Historical Evidence Dundee Castle was built on a hill of black dolerite jutting into the Tay. Most physical evidence of the site was blasted away in the early 19th century to make way for Castle Street, but St Paul's Episcopal Church, High Street, still clings to a small portion of this dolerite exposure. Its existence is implied in the early 13th century by the name Castle Wynd but the first documentary evidence of the castle is in 1290 when Brian FitzAlan was made custodian of the castles of Forfar and Dundee.1 Lamb argues that the fortification was extensive, and maintained at least 130 knights and horseman within its walls. This may be supported by the details of provisioning of the castle in various records, but in particular from the English Exchequer Rolls of the reign of Edwards I and II, although all provisions would not necessarily be destined solely for the occupants of the castle, but possibly also for retainers nearby.2 Taken by the English at the beginning of the Wars of Independence, the castle was then successfully seized by Sir Alexander Scrymgeour who was, in reward, made hereditary constable of the castle of Dundee in 1298 by William Wallace.3 It has been claimed that the castle was destroyed on the instruction of Wallace.

  • Assessing the Impact of Major In-Town Shopping Centres
Messages from the Oracle: Assessing the Impact of Major In-Town Shopping Centres Neil Crosby*, Catherine Hughes*, Colin Lizieri*# and Melanie Oughton+ * Department of Real Estate & Planning, University of Reading Business School Whiteknights, Reading, RG66AW + The National Trust # Author for correspondence: [email protected] Messages from the Oracle: Assessing the Impact of Major In-Town Shopping Centres Abstract Planning policy aimed at preserving the viability of UK town centres halted the wave of out-of-town shopping centres – Schiller’s “third wave” of decentralisation. In consequence, a number of major in-town shopping malls were developed in the UK. The first of these was the Oracle Centre in Reading. This paper examines the impact of the Oracle on retail activity in the town centre using land use data and the results of a retailer survey. The Oracle acted as a catalyst for change, accelerating trends already observed in the centre, shifting the prime pitch, weakening peripheral areas and increasing turnover rates. The added attraction of the town centre offset many of the trade diversion impacts. However, some adverse effects may have been masked by strong consumer spending and a vibrant local economy. 1. Introduction Russell Schiller (1986) described the development of large, out-of-town regional shopping centres as the “third wave” of retail decentralisation in Britain. Prior to the 1980s, the only major shopping centre outside a town centre was Brent Cross. Planning policy however, shifted in the mid-1980s and a series of proposals for out- of-town centres appeared, coinciding with a more laissez-faire approach and a presumption in favour of development.
