Most physical evidence of the site was blasted away in the early 19th century to make way for Castle Street, but St Paul's Episcopal Church, High Street, still clings to a small portion of this dolerite exposure. Its existence is implied in the early 13th century by the name Castle Wynd but the first documentary evidence of the castle is in 1290 when Brian FitzAlan was made custodian of the castles of Forfar and Dundee.1 Lamb argues that the fortification was extensive, and maintained at least 130 knights and horseman within its walls. This may be supported by the details of provisioning of the castle in various records, but in particular from the English Exchequer Rolls of the reign of Edwards I and II, although all provisions would not necessarily be destined solely for the occupants of the castle, but possibly also for retainers nearby.2 Taken by the English at the beginning of the Wars of Independence, the castle was then successfully seized by Sir Alexander Scrymgeour who was, in reward, made hereditary constable of the castle of Dundee in 1298 by William Wallace.3 It has been claimed that the castle was destroyed on the instruction of Wallace. -

Historic England has published a listing selection guide for Culture and entertainment buildings (2017). It has published guidance on Gentlemen’s clubs and masonic lodges as part of its selection guide for Commerce and exchange buildings (2017). The Council has adopted Criteria for identifying local heritage assets (2016). This discussion document examines the selection guides in a local context and offers recommendations for local listing. Cinemas According to Historic England, cinemas “emerged almost overnight” following the 1909 Cinematograph Act. In the late 1920s there was “major change” led by “the emergence of the large cinema chains”. Historic England advises that cinemas erected before 1914 are generally considered suitable for listing, subject to “a surviving exterior” and “particularly good decoration”. For later cinemas, “architectural quality and extent of alteration will be key considerations”. At Ibstock the ‘Palace’ was designed by Goddard & Wain and opened in December 1912. It is the only cinema in the district erected before 1914 and for this reason it is considered suitable for addition to the local list. At Ashby the former Wagon & Horses PH was altered in 1912 to form the ‘Lyric’; it closed in 1927 (Jones, 2012). The building is grade II listed. At Measham the ‘Empire’ was erected in 1932 on the site of an earlier cinema (Elliott, 1992); it does not exhibit “architectural quality” and it is not considered suitable for addition to the local list. -

The works brass band – a historical directory of the industrial and corporate patronage and sponsorship of brass bands Gavin Holman, January 2020 Preston Corporation Tramways Band, c. 1910 From the earliest days of brass bands in the British Isles, they have been supported at various times and to differing extents by businesses and their owners. In some cases this support has been purely philanthropic, but there was usually a quid pro quo involved where the sponsor received benefits – e.g. advertising, income from band engagements, entertainment for business events, a “worthwhile” pastime for their employees, corporate public relations and brand awareness - who would have heard of John Foster’s Mills outside of the Bradford area if it wasn’t for the Black Dyke Band? One major sponsor and supporter of brass bands, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, was the British Army, through the Volunteer movement, with upwards of 500 bands being associated with the Volunteers at some time – a more accurate estimate of these numbers awaits some further analysis. However, I exclude these bands from this paper, to concentrate on the commercial bodies that supported brass bands. I am also excluding social, civic, religious, educational and political organisations’ sponsorship or support. In some cases it is difficult to determine whether a band, composed of workers from a particular company or industry was supported by the business or not. The “workmen’s band” was often a separate entity, supported by a local trade union or other organisation. For the purposes of this review I will be including them unless there is specific reference to a trade union or other social organisation. -
